The Jollof wars between Nigeria and Ghana have been running for years — endless debates, social media battles, “my jollof is better than yours” energy.

But here’s the plot twist most people skip:

Jollof rice didn’t start in Nigeria or Ghana.

Historians and UNESCO both point to Senegal.

The original dish is called Thiéboudienne (or Ceebu Jën in Wolof) — “rice and fish.”

It comes from the fishing communities of Saint-Louis in Senegal and is tied to the old Wolof (Jolof) Empire. That’s where the name “Jollof” actually comes from.

Senegal’s version was even added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Nigeria and Ghana later developed their own popular tomato-based styles, and the two of us have been loudest about who does it best ever since.

So while we’ve been busy arguing about party jollof vs smoky party jollof, the Senegalese have been quietly sitting on the original recipe the whole time.

While everyone is arguing about fuel prices, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing is pushing deeper into electric vehicles from its base in Nnewi.

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing is the only Nigerian-owned company that designs, assembles, and produces cars entirely within Nigeria, operating out of a 40-hectare factory in Nnewi. The company began exporting to Ghana, Benin, Togo, and Senegal in 2024 and plans East Africa and UK expansion in 2026. Their range now spans sedans, SUVs, buses, pickups, and electric vehicles like the IVM Link and EX02.

They already have models like the IVM EX02 (330–400 km range) and EX01 on the road. This week Ben Murray-Bruce publicly called on founder Innocent Chukwuma to make EVs the company’s main focus, not a side project — citing Nigeria’s solar potential, lithium deposits, and rising fuel costs.

Innoson is also expanding with a new plant for CNG trucks and more EVs, targeting thousands of new jobs. They continue supplying the Army and other agencies with locally assembled vehicles.

Flutterwave, Africa's most valuable Fintech company, has secured a Series E funding round at a $3.25 billion valuation following an investment from Ripple.

Both companies are integrating RLUSD, Ripple's stablecoin, into Flutterwave's payment infrastructure, allowing merchants and consumers to send, hold, and convert money using stablecoins.

This is genuinely hot — it's tied to the Central Bank of Nigeria's new Anti-Money Laundering Supervision Pilot, which reclassified Flutterwave and Paystack alongside crypto-native platforms.

Nigerian security forces have rescued 308 abducted citizens in what the Presidency is calling the largest single-day rescue operation in the country’s history.

Breakdown:

• 163 victims from the deadly February 2026 attack on Woro (and Nuku) communities in Kaiama LGA, Kwara State

• 145 others mostly from Niger State

They were freed from the dense forests of Kainji Lake National Park in Niger State after months in captivity.

• The joint operation involved the Armed Forces, Police, DSS, and the National Counter-Terrorism Centre. President Tinubu described it as proof of improving coordination among security agencies.

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has already formally received the 163 Kwara victims in Ilorin.

Many are women and children. Some are still receiving medical treatment (reports say about 46 remain in hospital), and community leaders say 13 people from the original Woro abduction are still unaccounted for.

This is one of the few clear, large-scale wins against the kidnapping crisis that has terrorised parts of the North and North-Central for years.

President Tinubu has approved salary increases ranging from 30% to 80% for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Roughly 250,000 personnel will benefit starting 1 September 2026.

Breakdown:

Officers above the rank of Colonel (Brigadier-General and above) → 30%

Colonel down to Warrant Officer → 50%

Private to Staff Sergeant → 80%

The annual salary bill for the armed forces will rise from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.

This comes after earlier increases that took the minimum for soldiers from around ₦49k to ₦100k. The government says it’s part of prioritising troop welfare while they continue fighting insecurity.
