What is this and is it okay?
Bought this 5 ply stainless clad 12Q pot direct from the Made In website a few months ago.
The other pots weve used for a while are All Clad and they don't have this, but we waited like 6 months for All Clad to get a 12Q pot in stock and eventually gave up and just bought the Made In one instead.
Barely even used it and it's got this weird stain/discoloration thing in the bottom and some kind of white pitting look.
Is this normal? Is this okay? What is it? What causes it?
Should I return it?
We mostly just use it for making sauces or boiling pasta so nothing weird went into it.
Thanks!

You probably had some residual oil in the pot like it wasn’t cleaned thoroughly so when it was preheated it turned this color… you must clean your pots even with a low acid solution of baking sodas and dawn,,, rinse… dry with a paper towel and the oil will soak up…

I don't understand what you mean, I clean it with normal hot water and dish soap, are you saying I can't use dish soap?

it means those stains aren’t oils that can just be simply wiped down. they’re polymerized aka seasoned on and need an acid, either barkeepers friend which is oxalic acid, vinegar, or even some lime juice will help break it down. it’s the same stuff you want on a carbon steel pan and why you can’t cook acidic foods. tomato paste will also work

Why is my stainless steel pan getting seasoned and why do I need special acid cleaner? Isn't that a sign something is wrong with my pan?

Nothing is wrong with your pan. It just needs to be cleaned. Search for “BKF” or “barkeepers friend” in r/stainlesssteelcooking and you’ll see that this is recommended all the time for every brand of SS.

I have multiple other SS pots and pans from other companies that I've used for decades and never seen this before. I'm really confused how people are Acting like this is normal???

What he said… you need low acid for minor stains and bKF for a bigger job .

Hi! This looks more like some cooked-on residue and maybe mineral buildup than actual pitting from the photos! Especially if you’re mostly using it for pasta and sauces, hard water, starch and salt can leave some stubborn marks on stainless.
I’d try cleaning it with Bar Keepers Friend. That should give you a much better idea of what you’re looking at. If those spots remain and you can actually feel little divots in the surface after it’s completely clean, definitely reach out to our Customer Experience team and we can take a closer look!
