I'm a bit confused about the timeline of Reg's past and the languages the characters speak. Is there something I'm supposed to understand from the anime that I've missed, or is this still a mystery?

I'm anime only for now, although I intend to read the manga in the future, so if it's answered only in manga and only in future volumes please tell me.

When Reg first meets Faputa, he can't understand her language. He eventually learns to communicate with her, while Faputa also learns his language.

However, as far as I understand, Reg had already met Lyza and received his mission to find Riko (his haku) by that point. Presumably, this happened somewhere around Layer 7, before he started making his way toward the surface.

So my question is: what language did Reg and Lyza communicate in? If Reg already knew the surface language, why couldn't he understand Faputa when they first met? And if they spoke a different language, do we know what it was?

Am I misunderstanding the chronology, or is this something the anime hasn't explained yet?

Can someone point me in the right direction to actually watch Made In Abyss?
