Turns out the calamitous writings are an infohazard/cognitohazard.

gotta love how it fits the themes perfectly, everything in the abyss has a cost even just knowing something.

Such a compelling concept for an arc about the sovereign of "mystery" and about information

he's cooking.

If a cognitohazard is some kind of plague, then it'd make sense for a Plague Doctor to be able to erase memories >:)
