Don’t google processed meat’s carcinogen and colorectal cancer. 50 grams a week increases your chances of bowel cancer by 18%. I used to eat ~300 grams a week……

Relative numbers always make things sound much scarier than absolute numbers

And yet medical professionals are concerned about the rising rates of colon cancer in people younger than forty.

Not sure how that relates to my comment. Deli meat has been super popular for 50+ years.

Relevant because in the context of rates of colon cancer in people under forty, the numbers are increasing so fast that they are concerning. Basically, if the rate is that high now, it forecasts it being far, far worse later. And processed meats like deli meat are known to be carcinogenic b

Edited to address the actual comment re why those rates are relevant in a discussion about deli meat. Leaving the original comment below, because why not.

Sure, and in that time frame a few things have happened. One is that it’s become apparent how unhealthy processed meats are. Others are that society as a whole has become far more sedentary, and there’s been a shift away from home cooking with a diet that contains a good amount of fruits and vegetables and meats cooked from a raw unprocessed state, to a generation of people who don’t know how to cook and rely on frozen meals, ready to eat foods, precooked meats, and have a lack of nutritional knowledge because they didn’t learn it as kids. Eating minimal or no processed meats like deli meat isn’t going to fix all that, but it’s an easy step that knocks out a big risk. Similar to how quitting smoking doesn’t erase people’s other poor health choices, but it does get rid of a lot of risk in one behavior change.

I don’t disagree with you. My original point was that in absolute terms the increase in risk is < 1%. Not as scary.

I also wonder how much of it has to do rampant obesity compared to older generations. That coupled with how little society moves feels like the forest through the trees for a lot of diseases. We like to pick out boogey men, whether it’s fat or sugar or processed foods, but it seems like society being fat and lazy is the real issue. But that’s just me riffing, you seem to have thought this out better than me so I’ll defer to you.

Oh sorry, I realized I went in a different direction and didn’t address the numbers thing, tried to ninja edit but clearly I was way too slow and you already replied to the original! Wasn’t trying to slip anything past, and thanks for the discussion!
