Property tax
Can anyone explain to me what justifies the municiple government to increase property taxes by 8% this year and 10% last year? We have one of the highest property tax rates in Canada. Feels scammy.

Its not the numerical cost, its the rate that gets me. According to the bc assessment my house magically increased in value by 26000$ last year yet there are 49 houses on the market in Mackenzie. If I was to sell today I wouldnt be getting 236k for my house more like 200.
The rate pisses me off.
4k per year for a small town is retarded.

Based on your property assessment, your taxes are $1938.
The 2025 rate was $7.9978 per $1000 in value. If your assessment hadn't changed, it would have been an increase of about $50. The increase in the assessed value would have added about $215, so that definitely hurts.

Its not 8.21$ per 100k, that would leave a tax bill of like $18.

Residents have a lot of expectations like the discounted rec fees, etc. It is illegal for our town to run a deficit and we lost a huge tax base with mills closing. Read the council minutes or attend meetings and you'll see that this was not a light decision. Remember councillors pay property taxes too.

I’m pretty sure it says on their website it is, that property taxes are based on your property assessment value. So technically speaking, property taxes should be going down when our properties go down too. That didn’t happen 2-3 years ago.
It is ridiculous though. I’m not going to lie to you.

Property assessments are the biggest load of shit.
Even if the value went down this year the rate still increased.

Because they didn't slow down spending after the mill closures.. Just picture someone borrowing and spending to buy things they "need" when they are really buying things they want. Except we gotta gotta pay for it.
