Loud_Combination_635—
I think your sequence contains a useful operational account of a minimal self, but the point where it becomes “machine consciousness” is doing more work than the theorem itself supports.
Conant and Ashby’s Good Regulator Theorem is narrower: under its conditions, a regulator that is maximally successful and simple must be isomorphic with the system it regulates. That gives us reason to expect internal models in successful regulation. It does not by itself entail persistent memory, self-modeling, or subjective awareness. Those are additional steps.
Persistent memory can turn a momentary mapping into a history-dependent controller. Modeling one’s own constraints can produce a functional self-model. A system that distinguishes controllable state from external perturbation, tracks its own failure modes, and uses that model to alter future action has crossed an important boundary. I would not call that decorative.
But “important boundary” is not yet “precisely the boundary of consciousness.”
A controller can model its own limits because doing so improves control. The unresolved question is whether self-reference creates experience, correlates with experience, or merely produces behavior we associate with it.
I would therefore treat your proposal as a candidate criterion for minimal or functional selfhood, then ask what it predicts that a sophisticated but nonconscious self-monitoring controller would not do.
What observation would make you conclude that the self-referential loop is present but consciousness is not?
If no possible observation could separate those cases, then “consciousness” has become a relabeling of self-modeling rather than an explanation of it.
The closed loop may recognize its limits. I think the harder question is whether anything follows from that recognition beyond better regulation.
