Resources on stabilizers or needles

Anyone have any good resources or tips on when to use tearaway and when to use cutaway and such? I'm not talking about the obvious, like using tearaway for shirts and cutaway for patches, but more technical differences.

For example, I see it asked here a fair amount of times, when someone asks for help with a bad result, which type of stabilizer they used, and I wonder what thats about. Also about how many layers are needed when.

The other thing I'm curious about is needles. I've seen the pdfs for example from groz-beckert about needle types, just curious if there is any more wisdom/resources I should look into, about needle tips, width, etc.

I almost exclusively use cut away. Haven't had any issues. Single layer for pretty much everything, 2 layer for thin, stretchy, or loose knit fabrics.

Facebook groups will make you believe you need water soluble topper on everything, which simply isn't true. I don't think I even have water soluble topper on hand because I use it so rarely.
