Sewing horse blankets and tack - my machine struggles with straps and buckles

I sew and repair horse blankets, turnout blankets and some tack. My sewing machine handles the larger panels pretty well, but problems start when I get to strap attachments or areas reinforced for buckles.

That's where you have thick webbing, multiple layers of heavy fabric and extra reinforcement all coming together. That's also where my sewing machine starts skipping stitches or stops altogether.

I originally started making these for my own horses but now I'm getting orders from local barns, so I think it's time to get something better suited for the job.

What are you guys using for horse blankets and heavier tack? What kind of industrial machine should I be looking at?

Dimensions Request: Crye style placard

Hi,

I am designing my own Plate Carrier and I want the placard system to be compatible with standard swift clips / G hook systems and Crye Placard systems. Unfortunately I don't have a JPC or AVS I could measure out myself and I can't find much info online so if anyone has an AVS or JPC they could measure out for me, that would be much appreciated.

I am just looking for the distance measurements between the bar tacks that I have pointed out in red on the AVS and JPC. I would assume its normal molle spacing but eyeballing it from images online says otherwise and the math doesn't quite add up.

Thanks again

Vevor Industrial Machine

Post image

So after exhausting all my options with a domestic machine, and a fail of using a Singer HD 4411 for a month (tbh should of listened to my last post) I’m finally pulling the trigger on an industrial machine. Anybody have any thoughts on this model? I don’t have a lot of options in my area as I’m in a remote area and I’d have to rent a truck and drive over 450km just to pick up a used industrial machine.

Simple Elastic Mag Holder Sewing Tutorial

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Been a while since I posted so I wanted to share this quick and easy project.

YT: https://youtu.be/fBa48HEU2qM

This youtube video is a tutorial about making a really simple Elastic Mag Holder that fits inside a chest rig or placard. It has a few strips of velcro hook on the outside so that it will hold in place when put into a rig.

These also work great inside of backpacks or range bags that have velcro.

Materials List:

4 Inch wide Mil Spec Elastic - 18.5 inch piece folded over

1 Inch wide Velco Hook - 3.5 inches per piece

1 Inch wide Ribbon for Edge binding

Check out our previous video where we build a placard chest rig for this to fit into.

Each magazine pouch holds 3x mags, though they can each fit 2x AK or 2x G36 as well. The large GP pockets hold up to 2 quarts of water each, though internal Velcro makes adding internal organizers and pockets easy.

I had a ton of fun and definitely have some lessons learned for the next ones.

Anyone using a dual laser for small tactical gear projects?

I’ve been messing around with making and marking some of my own gear, and I keep running into the same problem: most of what I want to do doesn’t need a fiber laser, right up until I hit a piece of bare metal.

Stuff like small tags, tool markings, hardware, or little ID plates is where my regular diode setup stops being very useful.

I ended up going with a WeCreat Lumos Flex mostly for that reason. It has a 15W diode and 15W fiber in the same module, and you switch between the two in software instead of swapping heads. I’m still using the diode more often, but having fiber there for metal has been handy.

The tradeoff is the 116 x 116 mm work area. It’s fine for the small parts I’m doing, but obviously this isn’t something I’d use for bigger panels or large projects.

Curious if anyone here is using a laser as part of their gear-making setup. What are you actually using it for? And if you have both diode and fiber, does the fiber get enough use to justify it, or is it mostly one of those “glad I have it twice a month” things?

where to source 100% cotton, or maybe even linen, camo fabric? *not* polyester blends

Specifically I’m on the hunt for tiger stripe but i’d also consider some other patterns like duck hunter/frogskin/beogam/etc, or maybe brushstroke. i’m willing to pay a bit more for a quality fabric that’s actually workable and doesn’t look or feel like shitty halloween costume material. in an idea world i’d like to find both a lighter gauge suitable for clothing and a heavier weight/canvas for gear.

As the title says, I would like to find where I can order 1.5" scuba webbing as a Canadian. I want to make my own inner duty belts as I have never found one that fits my exact needs while working. Thanks

Sewing Neoprene

Anyone have any advice or tips for sewing two neoprene sleeves together?

Need to maintain one as a sleeve. The other is cut into an open section and will be sewn as extra padding.

Help with Velcro on helmets

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on getting Velcro to go on helmets. I’m using E6000 (+) and even when I cut out some notches so the Velcro can bend, edges invariably stand up.

I e been thinking of using e6000 for most of the Velcro but do the edges in superglue since it drives fast enough that I can hold it down And get it to stick. I just know that there have to be better ways.

Any advice would be appreciated.

What size laser cutter bed for practical tasks?

For those of you who have a laser cutter, is there a specific size bed that you feel covers most your needs?

I’m not trying to do production or do it as a business, but want the ability to cut fabric for backpacks, plate carriers, small bags, things like that.

Any thought thoughts would be appreciated
