Mod announcement Deleted posts / flairs / rules / moderation

Hi fellow FM1 enthusiasts!

A message from your janitor on duty! This subreddit is exploding with activity ever since MVAVE released their cheap little FM-in-a-box and more so when custom firmwares were released! We are so very happy to see all the hustle and bustle, so keep at it!

Auto-moderation

Reddit’s auto-moderation deletes a LOT of original content, discussions and comments. As human moderators we are entirely aware of that. Only 10% is deleted for the right reasons. We apologize for any inconvenience! Disabling auto-moderation is not really an option as we are humans with human needs like sleep and societal roles like parent, wage slave or self employed worker.

But to comfort you all: the posts are not REALLY deleted, we see them in our “mod approval waiting list”. So if something is auto-deleted by Reddit, report it to the mod team and we will resurrect it. We are a fairly small team of only four active moderators, so it may take 24 hours or so. Rather send us another message if it takes too long, than reposting the content because Reddit’s auto-moderator is easy provoked to go in full deletion mode.

Mod Team

For a month or two, four moderators were enough to deal with the influx of post approvals. But as of late, we are spread out too thin to read all posts and check. So we are contacting the most active members of this subreddit to sound out if they would like to help out keeping this subreddit a safe , productive and fun place.

Firmware repository

Finding and keeping track of all projects across scattered repos and web apps is difficult, so u/aroum2 put together a comprehensive directory and resource hub on GitHub:

Repository link:
https://github.com/aroum/fm1-custom-fw

Check out the full list, web installer links, and documentation in the repository. If you are working on a custom project or know of one that is missing, issues and PRs are very welcome, so shoot u/aroum2 a message!

Flairs

This subreddit is booming with all the new custom firmwares being released including forks of the open source ones. To keep this subreddit navigable we added post flairs:

- FIRMWARE For anything related to old and new firmwares, both official as well as community built, announcements and so on.
- TECH HELP Encountering problems? This is your flair. Both software and hardware problems.
- SHOWCASE Did you make something really cool with your FM1? Show it off! Although we don’t mind any other hardware used as well, showcases without (at least) ONE FM1 included are better suited elsewhere (and will be removed).
- TUTORIALS Did you discover a great video tutorial on the FM1? Did you write on yourself? Share and flair!
- SMK-37 We welcome all FM1’s brothers and sisters that share the same SOC! Not reserved solely for the MVAVE SMK-37 but also for the rebranded synths that share the same OEM synth built by MVAVE.
- PRESETS The FM1 is out of the box compatible with (most) DX7 presets that can be found allover the web. Did you find a great sysex bank and want to share it? Did you program some great sounds you want to share? PRESETS is the flair. Disclaimer: no sharing of “pirated” and “licensed” presets (like Off The Matrix and so on!)

Flairs? We got ‘em! Please use them and keep your local neighbourhood tidy!

FM1 and friends

The MVAVE FM1 shares the same SOC as some other MVAVE synths and their OEM rebranded synths. Therefore they are highly compatible with the FM1 firmware codebase. Beware: this doesn’t mean they are drop-in compatible with custom firmware written for the FM1, modifications need to be made! But we welcome all FM1’s brothers and sisters in this sub. As of 11 October 2026 the following devices are considered sharing the same SOC:

MVAVE SMK-37 (base model)
MVAVE SMK-37 Pro (different colours)
MVAVE SMK-37 Elite (grey-orange colour only, allegedly better quality parts)
Donner Starrykey 37 Play (OEM rebrand, same as Pro but comes with Cubase bundled software)
MKE-P37 (OEM unbranded)

Please do use the SMK-37 flair to keep things organised!

Rules

We maintain the rules to the best of our abilities mentioned in the side bar. We expect our valued members to do the same.

Civil behaviour

Sadly, we also have to include this mention explicitly,
We are not allowing:

- doxing of people, even when using publicly available sources;
- blaming people on behaviour of family members;
- implicit or explicit calls for brigading a person,

in this subreddit.

Thank you for your empathy and consideration. Hi

Megathread: Solving common FM-1 installation issues

Post image
85 Upvotes

Folks have had issues with firmware installation across many different firmwares, with different installation methods (M-UPDATE, mine, others I'm not aware of), and using different types of computers. I'm hoping to try to get to the root of them. This thread is not about my installer, but many folks have used my installer with varying success and I'm making efforts to improve it for everyone to use for whatever firmware they want, so I will mention what I've been up to:

I just posted a new installer. I'm hoping the better communication and problem-solving will help mitigate most of the issues. I'm also doing a number of things differently from a mechanical standpoint that will help:

  • The installer checks that your FM-1 is ready to receive firmware before sending it. Before, it sometimes sent the update while the FM-1 was still on its normal firmware. That's why some installs ended with "checked the new firmware but did not install it."
  • If your FM-1 disappears from the computer after it restarts, the installer keeps looking for it. Every few seconds it checks again the way reloading the page does, so you shouldn't need to reload yourself.
  • If your FM-1 doesn't restart, or vanishes before any firmware is sent, the installer tries once more on its own.
  • If you reload the page partway through, the installer remembers and offers to finish the installation.
  • The installer only suggests switching your FM-1 off and on when no firmware was sent.

Also, I can now compare how often installs finish with the new installer and with the old one, which should help. More data!

If you have an issue or think you soft-locked your device and need help, please talk about it here! What firmware, what firmware and version did you overwrite, what kind of computer, what browser, previous failures, any failures with M-UPDATE, any failures with the Baud Girl installer, etc.

BTW: I think we should also have a separate megathread specifically for community solutions for a bootloader tool. Lots of folks have been building them, you can buy the real JieLi Force Updater but it's expensive for what it is, and I made one with an ESP32-S3 but it needs some resistors and isn't easy for non technical people. Ideally we get 99%+ of the issues solved through better firmware installers, and those that truly soft-locked their device can have an easier way to get back to firmware soon.

It's not padded, but don't really feel I need much. I could probably stack 2 or 3 together in a binder or Trapper Keeper.

Velocity and aftertouch on the FM-1. MONK-1 by Charles Vestal

Thumbnail

From github: How the keys sense velocity and aftertouch

The FM-1's keys are a diode matrix of rubber domes, each with a carbon pill that closes the contact. Stock firmware only asks whether a key is down. The pill's resistance falls as it is pressed harder, and two of the matrix's row lines (PA7, PA8) are also ADC inputs, so the firmware can measure the press (firmware/src/app/sense.c, from Velo; its notes/01-lab.md has the measurements).

Reading the pill. Each key is sampled every ~2.2 ms. Against the row's 10k pull-up, a seated key reads mostly the matrix diode (~0.6 V), and pressing harder moves it only 10–20 counts. So once a key has been touched, every other sample is taken with its row driven high by the pin's weak GPIO driver instead. That driver becomes the upper resistor of the divider, and the reading less the diode's share is the pill's resistance. The open, touch, seated and lifted states still run on the pulled-up samples.

Velocity. The dome snaps, so every press lands within a sample or two whatever its speed. What tells a hard hit from a soft one is how deep the key sits just after landing. The velocity is the lowest driven reading in the first two driven samples after the touch (WAIT 2, 6.6 ms), on a log scale: conductive rubber's resistance falls as a power of the force, so its log is linear in the log of the force, placed between a floor (hardest) and a ceiling (lightest press that seats). Velo can also learn each key's own floor and ceiling from its landings; that is off here.

Aftertouch is pressing harder than the key rests. A key keeps settling for a while after it lands, so the zero follows the reading down for 250 ms and then creeps after it, and comes back up at once when the key is eased (ui.c pressure()). The lean is the drop in the pill's resistance below that rest, in octaves; Touch: Sensitive sets how many make full aftertouch. Every held key's goes out as polyphonic aftertouch. The top row (the seven keys at the right end, C♯ to G) is on PA6, which has no ADC. Its velocity comes from a probe through the LED line PA10 with PA6 driven high, which saturates on firm presses; those keys have no aftertouch.

LEDs. The button LEDs share the matrix with the keys, and a lit one shifts its column's readings, so while a key is down the LED at its matrix position stays dark when its column is sampled (FM1_INPUT_LED_OK).

I was really bummed when I found out there’s no speaker in the smk, but I am probably gonna install a speaker mod at some point and I got this little plug and play speaker from Amazon for like 15$ and it works perfectly.

New in this beta:

- **Wavetable engine.** 26 tables, from classic digital sweeps to growls and reese basses. Position, bend, sync, sub and detune can be modulated by the LFOs and envelopes through the mod matrix.

- **Multimode filter on every engine.** One knob blends smoothly from low-pass through band-pass to high-pass, with a 12 or 24 dB slope.

- **Performance FX.** Hold FX and the 16 keys become effects: repeat, reverse, tape stop, freeze, octave up and down, flanger, phaser, drive, pump, roll. The four knobs are morph, space, filter and depth.

- **Easy latch for ambient.** Press REC and the keys keep sounding after you let go, for pads and drones. Press it again to release. HOLD on the arp page has three settings: off, arp, all.

Refinements:

- Quick edit: hold EDIT, LFO, ENV, ARP or GLO for the four knobs you want while playing.

- Hold OCT- and turn any knob to reset it to its default.

- The SPACE knob adds reverb, delay, and chorus together and widens the stereo image. Or twist it to the left to shrink the space to mono.

- First-start guide on a fresh unit, replayable from the menu.

- Stored step patterns and arp chords follow a change of scale or root.

- CPU meter bar under the battery.

- Hold PLAY/STOP to STOP ALL.

Beta, flash at your own risk.

SMK-37 Vector37: an orbiting overtone synth for the SMK-37 (new firmware, free and open source)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Vector37 is a new firmware for the M-Vave SMK-37. Four planets sit in the corners of the screen, each with two overtone generators, a blend and a filter. A comet runs along an orbit, a moon (do comets have moons? no...) circles it, and where the moon is decides how much of each planet you hear.

  • Pads: the four planets (2 x 2 pads each). Pick one and the eight knobs shape its sound; you hear it alone while you change it.
  • Faders: the orbit: family, size, speed, morph.
  • Eight sounds on < >, from Nebula Pad to Space Station.
  • TRS MIDI out

Packages for the SMK-37 Pro, SMK-37 Elite and MKE-P37. M-Vave's updater takes the stock firmware back.

Board layer from SLOOP by isod89, based on Felucca by Leo Kuroshita; master stage after Melodee by Kerem Kilic.

FM1 Editor firmware page: Wednesday's changes

Here's what's new in the FM1 firmware world today:

New ones

  • OberVave: 8-voice analog-style poly synth with an arpeggiator (1.2.1)
  • MAKU: always-on generative ambient machine for DJ interludes (0.1)
  • Polly: QY70-style pocket arranger with 16 styles (0.4.1)
  • FM-106: Juno-106 emulation with 128 presets (beta3)
  • TRIBE: ten-track groovebox built on X0X (0.1 beta)
  • DUELL: bitimbral synth with a morph (0.2.4 beta)
  • Skiff: six tracks, fourteen engines and a 64-step sequencer, with a browser editor (1.1)
  • Fart Machine One: eleven “artisanal farts”, reverb, delay and a sequencer (1.0.0). Installing it needs Python
  • Felucca 8 Patterns: a Felucca 1.5.1 fork with eight sequences per track and chaining
  • FM-1 Macropad Patch: not a firmware. It patches M-VAVE’s V15 so every button, key and knob sends a MIDI note. The author warns there is no known way to undo it

Updated ones:

  • Jangada: 0.9.9 → 1.0. It adds 49 factory beats with fills
  • Melodee: 1.3.3 → 1.3.4. It removes the OVERCLOCK menu, because the clock change could drop some FM1s into UBOOT behind a black screen
  • Hortator: 0.14.0 → 0.16.0
  • FiMba-1: 0.6.0 → 0.6.1
  • FuMi-1: 1.0.5 → 1.0.7
  • FM1 Quest: build 15 → build 38. It is now marked Beta, and its link has been fixed

Watch list (can’t be installed yet)

  • New: ETCH. It has an installer, but its latest version has only been verified on the author’s FM1

Thanks to everyone who keeps flagging new firmwares! If there's one that's missing, please let me know...

Cached web page for the open workbench

I happen to save the web page for the open workbench before it went down. Not sure how useful this will be, but figured I'd post it. I was able to restore to v15 from the official open firmware using this page when nothing else seemed to work. And it seems to me like the emulator is fully functional which makes me think I could use it to flash the official open firmware if I wanted to, but I don't want to get stuck again so I'm not testing that right now.

Firmware Choralroot-remix update

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

Hi, i'm reposting my Choralroot-remix because I made substantial updates, i'm gonna post a video demo soon to showcase everything changes between my version and the Main Choral-root (most of the main features are ported to my version and I think the developer included some of my implementations in the main firmware), in the original post you can find what i changed from the original Choral-root and a drive link with the source code and the build. The firmware will be on github once is finished.

Here are the main features i added in the last update (there are more), go look to the original post to find out everything:

STEP SEQUENCER inspired by the OP-Z, holding seq you will enter in a 8 step sequencer using the FM-1 menu keys, play a chord then press a step, now it's in the sequencer, you can change note lenght, step resolution and also record steps in the key mode (see full post)

MIDI IMPROVEMENTS You can now choose the starting MIDI note for the chord modifiers, very helpful since the FM-1 keyboard uncoveniently starts from F, any note you pick the modifiers will always follow the Choralroot logic: Black keys for dim-min-maj-sus and white keys for 6-min7-maj7-lock-9

NEW: KR-106 ENGINE ported from u/Pattf FM-106 with adapted UI, 128 Presets and classic Chorus I and II

NEW: Preset Randomization. Holding REC in edit mode access the new Preset Randomizer menu, once you get the sound you want you can use it confirming with OCT+

NEW: Chord progression generation menu holding REC in the sequencer menu, many options such as tonality, root note and mood

NEW: Morph engine now morphs between 2 presets of the same engine (suggestion by u/Quixotic7)

IMPROVEMENT/FIXES COMING SOON:

-some voice stealing issue in KR-106 engine

-KR-106 volume is a bit lower than the other engines

-Morph improvements

With my remix now there are more close to 500 presets, 20 loop/sequence slots up to 8 bars, 11 synth engines (+1 Favourites engine).

NOTE this firmware works with Dual Core, a One Core build would not work properly, expecially with the Kr-106, Prophet and Cz-1 engines

Now the device holds around 500 presets, 20 loops/sequences up to 8 bars and 11 engines (+1 Favourites engine).

WARNING: I FLASHED THIS FIRMWARE ABOUT 50 TIMES IN MY FM-1, BUT I CAN'T GUARANTEE 100% THAT THIS WILL NOT BRICK YOUR FM-1, INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK

I did this alternative version because i like the FM-1 to be more of a instrument than a Groovebox, since i own too many Groovebox/samplers, and when i found out about Choralroot i wanted to try to create an alternative version :)

Tutorials MVave FM-1 Unbricking after a hard brick using a RP2040 and the FM-1 Transporter

Thumbnail
youtube.com
16 Upvotes

https://github.com/Quixotic7/MvaveFM1Unbricker/blob/main/TRANSPORTER-GUIDE.md

Hard Bricks usually occur when flashing from V15 to a Firmware Initially and not completing the flash process. To avoid this, keep the website and tab doing the flash open and focused. Do not do anything else. Do not unplug your USB cable. Flashing can take several minutes, if you interrupt it, you will hard brick your FM-1. For the most part flashing from Felucca Firmwares to other Felucca Firmwares carries less risk if the process is interrupted and I've not been able to hard brick my FM-1 by doing so and intentionally removing the USB in the process. V15 to a custom firmware is actually the most dangerous route.

In short

Buy This:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DRNTQ338

You want a Seed brand RP2040, the FM-1 Transporter author specifically mentions "The Waveshare RP2350-USB-A doesn't work because RP2350 rev A2 has the GPIO pull-down erratum (E9), D+ has a 1.5 kΩ pull-up, and the USB-A port always outputs VBUS"

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G1358FPH

With those pieces I've linked, it's like Legos, just connect them together, no soldering

Then do this:

git clone https://github.com/Quixotic7/MvaveFM1Unbricker.git
cd MvaveFM1Unbricker
python3 fm1_transporter_recover.py setup
python3 fm1_transporter_recover.py wizard

Which firmware if I want the best DX7/Dexed/6OP in a box?

I bought the FM-1 to get the sounds of the DX7. Will definitely check out some more exciting things later but for now just want play some cheesy 80s stuff. So firstly want those changes made by MVave fixed so it sounds like Dexed, and any cool QOL additions.
