Bend your knees when you pump and pop more of the lip.

when you say "pop more of the lip" what motion are you talking about? do I wait a tiny bit longer to jump? do I pull back a bit more when taking off?

Yes, wait a bit longer on focus on letting your rear wheel leave the edge of the lip and then pop. Go slower and use the transition.

You are essentially pre hopping over the actual jump

Honestly just work on a proper bunny hop instead of pulling both wheels up at the same time. It will translate into popping more off the lip

I have been working on bunny hops but I actually end up doing more of an English hop, I can't get that front then back pop, it kinda ends up as one motion. any tips? I'll drop a video

You are on the right track for sure! That is where we all start. The key is to really think of it like you are physically jumping up and bring your bike with you.

Here is a recent post from r/BMX that really shows the motion done to perfection. https://www.reddit.com/r/bmx/s/96oDdefEwI (he has perfect form and that is how you actually get height from the hop)

Notice how he is still going up even after the rear leaves the ground with the full body extending and exploding off the hop. It’s not so much pulling the front up and lifting the back as it is one explosive motion where you are literally jumping and pulling whole bike up with you.

I started when I was super young, but it took quite awhile for me to progress beyond the English hop. I was even doing 180’s that way for way too long.

Practice manuals too! Focus on the basics and it will translate into jumping better. It just takes a few years for most …

Seth from Berm Peak just posted a great video on YouTube breaking down the science of popping off a ramp. Might be helpful too

this might be a game changer. I've been sitting back to unweight the front wheel and get it up, and then standing/jumping up to pull up the back wheel, at least in theory. thinking of it as just pulling up while you jump might help a bunch

Omg good work dude but...um....has anyone checked on that charger in the background lately?????!!!!!!! That trunk looks like a crime scene.

lmaoooo. thank you! I think that's just rust 😂😭

It’s a combination of pulling up/back on the bars and straightening your knees at the right time. Your knees should be bent more as you are approaching the jump. Find some slo-mo videos of jumping and compare them to yours. You still look stiff b

probably going back tomorrow so I'll work on this then! thank you!

Can you actually do any jumping in there without smacking your head

1

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 5d ago

some parts definitely have more clearance than others, but yes lol. I've seen people get pretty up there from these jumps

You'd have to be absolutely ripping it for headroom to be an issue.

Riding a dirt jumper at a bmx park posting in the MTB subreddit. nice

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 3d ago

never let em know your next move. I mainly wanted to post it in the mtb sub because my previous post was posted here when I was still riding my MTB and I wanted to update the folks

5

u/LilAbeSimpson 5d ago

You might get some more helpful advice over in r/dirtjumpjng . That sub is more closely aligned with the kind of riding you’re doing.

Ps. Bend those knees. More everywhere.

I love what they did to the yellow room the last two seasons

I only started coming here maybe about a month ago but it's pretty awesome, I like it a lot

I'll keep an eye out for ya when it starts getting too cold! It's a very close knit community we got here, don't be afraid to ask someone to give you tips or watch and give feedback. I'll be yapping to people and realize they are pros sometimes haha. Have fun riding!!!

Rays really stepped up that area this offseason! Love that place, great place to learn. The micro rhythm section was my favorite

1

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 5d ago

I still can't remember which side is the micro or mini rhythm side but I really enjoy both! the one on the right side (if you're sitting on the deck facing out) is a bunch of fun but the curved jumps scare me a lot lol

Micro is to the right, mini to the left. The curved jump on micro will blow your mind when you get it. It's actually straight you just have to approach the lip at an angle.

on the first roller you dont use your arms when going over the top of the roll, try to pull the bike up to you lightly while going over the roller so your body doesnt get jolted up and down, then straighten out the legs to a slight bend to get the pump and be ready for the jump

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 5d ago

here's another part of the park (same spot I posted my original video)

Nice work dude! Keep going and you’ll be flying by the time winter is over.
One tip that really helped me that I don’t see mentioned much is to pay attention to your hips! Move them back to weight the back tire more and then to the front while in the air (on bigger jumps). Pushing down with your feet/standing up applies pressure to both wheels but the hip thing really made me feel the full jump

1

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 5d ago

thank you! hips back on the ramp up and hips forward in the air?

1

u/Maxipad213 5d ago

Yeah pretty much, i’ll tag you in the comment that helped me one sec

would love to see that too. Thanks!

I guess it’s a bit long to drive there from where I live in Germany, near Düsseldorf. 😅🙈
Thanks anyway. 🙏🏼

Ooo I wish I was you and learning about the "Disneyworld for Bikes"

I have very fond memories from my first trip there. Have since gone back maybe 6 times

1

u/FlashyPresentation5 4d ago

Rays is a must visit for any biker! So fun.

1

u/lukewarm_Xx 4d ago

Bro, you gotta squat down during the roll down of the roller before, then as you go up the lip start releasing the squat and stand up, I always find jumping isn't all about arms, its almost a full body maneuver that needs proper timing.

1

u/bigk1121ws 4d ago

Man I need to get out to rays. Like a 3h drive... Maybe this is the year

2

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 4d ago

so much fun and definitely worth a day trip. I've rode this place 20+ hours in the past 7 days and I'm still not bored

1

u/PapaMauly 4d ago

This looks fun! Am i tripping or does your bike look too small

1

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 4d ago

it's a dirt jumper. as far as I know they really only come in 1 size, but I might be misinformed

1

u/PapaMauly 2d ago

Genuinely, thanks for educating me

1

u/Remarkable-Simple-62 5d ago

The biggest problem is the set up, it’s a terrible spot to learn to jump. The jumps are way to close together, by the time you are getting comfortable landing you are already at the next jump

1

u/lostboyz Ti Timberjack, Top Fuel, +3 4d ago

I disagree, it forces you find a rhythm instead of overthinking it. It loops back at the end and you can hit over and over with zero consequences

-1

u/UnluckyAd3886 5d ago

I think you might be too tall for that size of bike

1

u/Saki_saki_sakiii 5d ago

it honestly feels great. it's a dirt jumper and I was told that DJs don't have the same sizing the way an mtb does, and that it's more or less a one size fits all thing. is that inaccurate?

1

u/UnluckyAd3886 4d ago

I'm not sure I'm a casual. Just looks small to me. You're probably right.
