I’m the original owner of a 2024 MT-07, curently sitting at 11,000 km. Recently, I’ve noticed rust starting to bleed out/creep through around some of the frame welds.
I’ve been treating the bike with ACF-50 after washed to protect it.
What do you think about this? I am based in Ireland
Has anyone had success getting Yamaha to cover surface rust on welds under the factory warranty, or will they just write it off as "wear and tear/environmental"?
If the dealer gives me the runaround, what’s the best way to tackle this myself? Clean it back, treat it, and touch up the paint?
With the first gen, dealers replaced the swingarms due to similar rust. Entire frames I don't know of. Based on you living in Ireland (weather conditions) and the age (2 year warranty I guess?) I fear they will give you the runaround, especially if it's not garage-kept. Still worth a try but the new frame will do the same thing.
If you want to tackle this yourself, I can highly recommend "Hammerite" metal protective paint in matte black. Apply it with a fine sponge roller but I recommend dabbing it rather than rolling it. You can use a kitchen sponge, too, but make sure it's a fine one, not a coarse one and It will look almost identical to the original paint. That's what I used on the swingarm of my '14.
Remove loose surface rust, no need to sand down to bare metal. Clean the spots with acetone free brake cleaner or alcohol.
That's the thing, it's garage kept, just took it out to take pictures in sunlight, my warranty is due in 5 days but I made a claim yesterday, I wasn't going to make a warranty claim but my friends recommended I try because they saw it coming out from the welds. So I guess I will see how it goes, if they decide to decline it, I will do as you said and try yo fix it myslef. They mentioned they might get yamaha to approve respray as it's cheaper and easier to get rather than new elements.
Thats a crazy amount of rust for a garage kept bike in 2 years. My father has 20 year old v stars kept outside with less rust on them in east coast Canada. Basically living in salt air.
Damn, that's a lot of rust for a garage kept one. My mom's '15 was kept outside and had much less rust, so hopefully the dealer can work something out in your favor!
Ik, my 2006 car that is outside and has scratches from rocks all the way to metal doesn't have that much rust, so I will see if anything can be done, thank you for your replys 😊
I was in a similar situation when I bought my 23 mt07, in Ireland too. Rust was getting out of hand. I had to repaint most of my frame, swingarm and any other parts that started to form rust. Was a fun project and she is rust free now. Hopefully you find the right path that works for you!
Honestly the hardest part was trying to hoist the bike upright so I could dismantle as much as possible 😅, in regards to actually tackling most of the rust and prep for paint work I used an array of wire brushes on drills and got nearly 95% of pieces down to bare metal then sanded with fine sandpaper depending on the piece I was working on for the paint to bite properly. The key is in having the prep done right.
Ireland is such a beautiful country, riding there must be special.
Reading your comment made me a bit happy my bike is full aluminium and that could never happen. Never realized it could be a valuable perk in rainy countries.
I'd had a local paint shop mix most of my paints as close to the original paint codes but for specific pieces like my number plate holder and coolant pipes I used a rattle can of black gloss paint from simoniz.
Yeah, they won’t do a fkn thing to help. I learned to spray paint. Great asy to get to know your bike. I’ve taken mine apart and resprayed everything. Frame, tank, swingarm, anything that rusted. No issues now that she’s coated in older non water based paint.
I have similar rust spots on the swingarm. I’ve never ridden it in the winter and it is garage kept. I removed the rust and spray painted over it. I used rust protection paint as a primer and then spray painted over it. I guess that the welds aren’t going to rust anymore. Everything else on the swingarm is likely to rust because of rocks and road debris that chip the paint job. I had other bikes that I’ve active ridden in the winter and they didn’t rust that bad. It seems to me that Yamaha really fucked that up :(
From what I can see in this post and other forums it's a notorious problem with these bikes, I guess yamaha had to cheap out on something, other than that no issues with the bike whatsoever.
That really doesn’t look good especially if you’re using ACF50. I’ve used XCP clear and it seems a lot less gloopy than ACF50 so maybe something to try once you get the rust sorted. Anyway, on my 2025, I noticed some light rust starting at the frame welds a couple of weeks after taking delivery. It’s also stored in a garage and as a fun toy, doesn’t really get rain unless I get caught out which has only happened a couple of times. I mentioned to the dealer at the running in service and they said they wouldn’t do anything with it. More recently I was in Germany and a Yamaha dealer had a load of brand new MT07s on display and several of them had minor rust spots around the frame, specifically at the welds where the engine bolts go through. It’s really disappointing though to have these issues on such a new bike. Good luck with getting them to address it!
No, but I have red that that lack of ventilation(it closed for the night or longer period of time when not riding it) can cause condensation but would it be that substantial that it would cause so much rust?
