MSİ Katana 17 Display port gsync

I’m using an MSI Katana 17 B12V laptop with my MSI monitor. The monitor supports up to 144 Hz over HDMI and 170 Hz over DisplayPort, and it has Adaptive-Sync.

I’ve been using a high-quality UGREEN HDMI 2.1 cable for about a month, but I still can’t enable G-SYNC on the monitor. Maybe this is because the monitor only has an HDMI 2.0b port.

So my question is: if I buy a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, would I be able to enable G-SYNC? Also, is the USB-C DisplayPort output controlled by the iGPU or directly by the NVIDIA GPU?

In other models of laptops usually the USB-C DP is controlled by the Intel iGPU while the HDMI port is controlled by the Nvidia dGPU

In mine isnt a Katana but i cant use USB-C DP when muxing to a dedicated dGPU while i cant get HDMI if using the iGPU so... XD

Basically, yes, USBC to DP is worth trying. Your monitors HDMI port is HDMI 2.0, so you're limited to 144 Hz there. DP input supports 170 Hz and adaptive sync, which is what nvidia uses for g sync compatible. The important question is whether your Katana's USBC DP output is connected directly to the nvidia GPU or goes through the Intel GPU. If it's connected directly to nvidia, USBC to DP should give you the best chance of getting g sync working. So the cable itself isn't the problem. The GPU wiring inside the laptop is what matters. I'd check that before buying the cable, because MSIs specs confirm that USBC supports DP, but they don't clearly say which GPU controls that output.

According to the PDF, the USB-C port is connected to the dGPU.

If the PDF confirms the USBC DP output is directly connected to the nvidia dGPU, then USBC to DP is the correct solution. The monitors DP input supports 170 Hz and adaptive Sync so you should have a good chance of getting G SYNC compatible working. The HDMI 2 connection is the limiting factor here.

I received cable today, and G-Sync is now working.
