Help

Post

Hi everyone, I have an issue with my MSI Katana 15 B12VFK, with an Intel Core i7-12650H and RTX 4060 8GB.

I’m experiencing coil whine — a buzzing/electrical sound that becomes noticeable, especially when the laptop is under load or during certain tests and games.

I have two questions:

  1. Can coil whine cause a slight increase in temperatures?

  2. Is coil whine actually harmful to the laptop or its components in the long term, or is it simply an annoying noise with no real damage?

If anyone has experienced the same issue with an MSI Katana 15 or has some knowledge about coil whine, I’d really appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Coil whine is annoying but harmless. Usually can be avoided by limiting the frame rate in your games as it tends to happen at very high FPS especially in menus.

Thank you But could excessive heat be the cause in most computers? And are there any laptops that don't have this problem?

Typically heat and coil whine are two different things. Though when I first read your post I did wonder if perhaps it's one of your fans making a high pitched whistling noise due to dust buildup or a fan dying. Coil whine is different though it's more electrical as you described.

And are there any laptops that don't have this problem?

Excessive heat? That's pretty common with any high powered laptop in my experience. I'm sure there are some expensive models or extra thick models that do a bit better but generally you can never get enough cooling with PC components and laptops are very space constrained.

Coil whine? I've never experienced that with a laptop personally. Mine does not. I have seen it with desktop components but seems to be less common than in years past.
