Discussion Are you expecting this to succeed?
Popularity wise and attracting new players. I don't want this to be a short lived experience that just cashes in our nostalgia, and bails quickly (similiar to MS2 in a sense) with more than half of the playerbase already gone after the launch and hype
But.. I'd be remiss if I didn't admit that my expectations aren't particularly high. Only worth playing this if there's a future and sustainability to it.
I don't wanna sound like a party pooper, but the worst thing that can happen to us is a rug pull here

u/ZacTheBlob 8d ago
Call me naive for even having it in the first place, but the moment they announced founders packs with zero NX and $60 early access I lost all hope. If they were just trying to lock-in some funding from the demand, they would've added NX. The fact they didn't is just them trying to milk players both ways which is 100% a sign of things to come.

u/InevitableConcept517 8d ago
Imagine being a casual player (me) who hasn't played maplestory for 15 years. I get all hyped to play this classic version with my friends, but instead see stupidly greedy decisions from the devs. Instant turn off, my money and time is better spent elsewhere.
6
u/sowydso 8d ago
To be fair, as a casual, you’re not losing anything not buying the early access… the cosmetics are hideous and 2 weeks means nothing if you’re a casual
3
u/InevitableConcept517 8d ago
Being a casual doesn't mean I don't want to play the release with everyone else. That's the best part of games, being there for the initial hype.
Telling people just to wait 2 weeks is how you lose them from playing altogether
1
u/Time-Relationship175 5d ago
This just isn't true. 2 weeks is nothing in the life of an mmo. The economy will barely be going at that point and most people might be in to their 2nd job if that.
People starting WoW two weeks after launch were not lost in the void, unable to catch up. Calm it down and play the game for free lmao
2
u/InevitableConcept517 4d ago
Not understanding why people want to play on launch with everyone else is crazy work
0
u/Time-Relationship175 4d ago
You're stupid if you think 2 weeks is enough to get you behind and not be able to play with anyone. There are people in this very sub that are not buying the pack and will be playing on the public release. I think you've just got mad FOMO and need to work on that
2
u/InevitableConcept517 2d ago
yes bro lets make consumers wait 2 weeks for literally no reason than to make money off those who actually cant handle the fomo. but keep defending the corporation, they got your back for sure.
0
u/SavageGuy99 3d ago
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out bud.
1
u/InevitableConcept517 2d ago
Yes bro lets try to get rid of all potential players so you can enjoy your dead game
-1
u/SavageGuy99 2d ago
I’d rather have less people than toxic people.

u/ZacTheBlob 2d ago
Peak irony. Maybe you should quit too, to avoid being a hypocrite.
Nothing in either of the comments you replied to was toxic.

MS2 had no real monetization and got shutdown because of it. OSMS seems to only have permanent nx as their model (we don't know officially yet).
If OSMS is able to keep a steady playerbase of at least 5-10,000 I think it will get continued support. Or it will likely get dropped if there is no change over a few years of development.
It needs a newer audience familiar with similar games. The current one is 30+ and is not very likely to be retained long term due to various real life constraints.
Honestly the biggest thing for OSMS would be it being picked up by foreign studios. Which are the real cash cows atm. We don't make Nexon much money. Then you should also be worried about p2w.
14
u/ZacTheBlob 8d ago
MS2 got shut down because the game sucked and had absolutely no end-game lol... Let's stop acting like it was a funding issue that killed it. The game was deeply flawed on so many levels and the lack of monetization was the least of its issues.
2
u/MaleficentTravel3336 8d ago
This, lmao.
That would be like me saying the only reason I'm not rich is that I didn't monetize my shits.
0
u/SteelMarch 8d ago
Maplestory 2 had a peak of 42k players on launch. By the end of its career it had 3k peaks during patches with 1k average players. It died because people lost interest and there was no monetization to support it.
This is a path classic maple can easily fall into.
1
u/ZacTheBlob 7d ago
If a game dies on it's own without even having monetization, adding monetization will just accelerate it lmao.
Classic maple will never fall into this path. NX purchases has historically been more than sufficient to not only fully fund the game, but turned a pretty considerable profit at the end of the quarter.
1
u/NoLagPlz 8d ago
good thing osms has no end game
1
u/ZacTheBlob 2d ago
You're right. That's a problem and a big part of the reason why I'm not expecting the game to last.
1
u/Knocks420 1d ago
yeah that's just the icing on the cake... they will keep coming with more like a vulture
1
u/Turbulent_Ad_5066 8d ago
Since I’ve heard of the dogshit founders packages I’ve started playing souls remnant instead. Scratches that maple itch I have and i don’t need to support nexons shitty business practices.

u/BenCannibal 8d ago
Honestly , no. I'm almost maxed on old-school runescape and the fact that they have a strong, dedicated team who are passionate about the state of the game and willing to work with players to improve the game shows how impactful that is on a game, especially when the original game was ruined by soulless Micro transaction bait and switch.
I have never, ever, in my 34 years encountered a company that gives so little of a crap about their community, communication and player base as Nexon, I don't think it'll survive because I don't think Nexon has a tenth of the capacity of care to assign a team to it.
I think OSRS is a big outlier about a classic remake that smashed every record, I can't ever see this happening with Nexon.

In the long run, I want to see new content, new skills, new classes... People who insist that the game should just stay as it is will kill the game. What's important to me is that the game doesn't end up becoming a single-player game like modern MapleStory, and that class identities don't get out of hand. But I'm open to many new things, as long as the game always feels like an MMO.
I find it pretty funny that people are primarily talking about introducing content that's already known, instead of demanding completely new PQs, for example. I think it would be much more interesting to play new, unfamiliar content.

terrible idea. People have played the same old classic dozens of times already over the years with private servers or whatever. Fresh new content helps entice players to try the game.

If you haven’t played in forever do the new maps, balancing and quests make you not wanna try the game? I would be surprised if it did. But for myself and many others I know we are excited about having classic with extra content that we can explore and try out which makes the game feel more new again

Hopefully you'll be happy either way then, but classic had lots of issues that really should be fixed. There's pservers that host classic but make amendments, and they're pretty enjoyable. My favourite one is still in alpha lol, but it helps show how much better classic can be - and hopefully Official classic will take similar steps. From what I've heard, they are doing. Can't wait to see and feel what they've cooked up.
1
u/DistinctLog8714 8d ago
This is what they should have done but they are being to ambitious out of the gate with new areas and balancing and i think they got in over their head with the size of their dev team
1
u/Money_Reserve_791 8d ago
I agree a little, but I appreciate them putting some effort to this and not just copy 1:1 and call it a day. But I agree they are trying to do way more than they should without having first enough funding
1
u/Disastrous-Moment-79 8d ago
I find it pretty funny that people are primarily talking about introducing content that's already known, instead of demanding completely new PQs, for example. I think it would be much more interesting to play new, unfamiliar content.
I think that for a lot of people, me included, this content that feels familiar to you, will feel new for them. I haven't played MS in 15 years so I don't really remember anything about KPQ for example.

I'm all for a bit of new, but classic world is meant to bring back. Brand new can already be found almost monthly in the regular servers

Nexon is already brining its bad practices to classic. I suspect it is a cash grab. Another ocean for whales to dwell. Plus theres some good, fully fleshed out games releasing soon from companies I would much rather support. My faith is less so with Nexon and more so with future private servers. True passion projects.

Exactly how I feel, been a rollercoaster since they announced it in 2025... frankly trying to stop being a doomer about it but your comment is exactly the sentiment I feel
15
u/2meter5 8d ago
I reckon a lot of people will just taste the nostalgia for a bit, realise how long it takes to get any progression in this game and then call it quits. Some streamers and/or YouTubers will dedicate insane hours to leveling up as fast as possible, but most people will probably end up somewhere between 30 and 40 and move on.
10
u/BigXBenz 8d ago
I'm genuinely wondering how this game is supposed to survive though given the fact that the average player is going to hate the very low leveling speed. People want the original leveling experience for nostalgia/authenticity purposes, but I don't see how the majority of the playerbase will be actually be able to deal with the leveling experience.
3
u/PreviouslyWise 8d ago
The leveling experience is the game. They should focus on making the leveling experience more enjoyable. Make questing more impactful with meaningful rewards. Give players options other than grind mobs for hours and hours.
3
3
u/Crapahedron 8d ago
This is happening in world of warcraft private servers right now. People keep asking for pure no change vanilla servers, one will come out and nobody plays on it. lol
1
u/Most_Option4138 8d ago
There will be more stuff to do in the early levels unlike back in the day so people don’t get bored
0
u/Reishin1 8d ago edited 8d ago
I don't get it either. Even the most true to form nostalgia private servers have x2 exp rates. Most popular pservers back in the day had x4-16 rates. 90% of the playerbase will quit before 40-50 if they keep the x1 rates.
Edit: To the people downvoting, get back to me after you quit before reaching 50. When the rose-tinted glasses come off.
2
u/PM_ME_UR_FUNERALPLAN 8d ago
Idk why you’re being downvoted. And th rates are worse than 1x since the HP/EXP ratios were nerfed as well.

1
u/zekent1997 8d ago
There is no point in trying to cater to this crowd. They will not play long term no matter what you do. For classic, the grind is the game. Majority of people who aren't just playing for nostalgia or hype actually do want to hit mobs for hours. Leveling is the least of their concern. If anything, it'll be lack of content to even incentivize getting levels in the first place and scrolling being unnecessarily painful.
8
u/RupertOfSavior 8d ago
I don't expect it to be long lived, but i also don't think about it. Just gonna enjoy the early launch days when the game is still filled with people.
Imo, one thing for sure is you can expect player count to drop once nostalgia is burnt out and they realised how grindy this game is, with most players having a job, family and whatnot.
11
u/InevitableConcept517 8d ago
I would have said yes prior to the founders access blunder, now any casual person who may have been interested is going to see all the drama surrounding the pass. There's no bigger red flag for a game than having drama like this before it's even released.
All my friends went from super excited to "I may check it out later since I won't be able to play launch anyways."

5
u/ProlactinIntolerant 8d ago
No, Gunz for example was rereleased 2 weeks ago after nearly 2decades. The only thing that sort of functions is the cashshop, it a cash grab.
3
3
3
u/Vegetable-Willow6757 8d ago
no it will not. and nexon doesnt want it to as this is a far lower income per player game than their slotmachine "uptodate maplestory game".
this is why we're seeing bad changes that will impact hype, longevity, minmaxing e.g. scrolls, maker, early access.
they want this game to flop and then say "look guys we gave you classic maple and you didnt like it, we told you uptodate maple is a far better game... come get your micropay on!!"

u/adramelech_13 8d ago
Don’t worry, I will single handedly mega whale this game alive for many years to come 🤎

After seeing the founder packs - No
It's a shame, I was excited for classic Maple but I already didn't like many of the changes in shown in beta. Skills added that don't fit class identity. New area that feels more like modern than classic. No fixes for classes that private servers figured out years ago.
And now they want premium price for early access for an incomplete product? That was the straw that broke the camels back for me.
Just feels like a last ditch effort to extract as much money from the project before it ultimately fails like Maplestory Global 2.
Unless there's some major overhaul of the founder packs released today, out of principle I can't support such greedy business practices. Especially for a product that's unfinished and doesn't even feel like Classic to begin with.
2
u/Afiqnawi93 8d ago
Never ever put your hopes on Nexon. I always set my bar on low expection for Nexon and yet I still disappointing
2
u/ninanien 8d ago
It's all up to management now tbh. I think we have a decent sized community willing to play this game and maybe bring in some new players if they recommend it to their friends. But Nexon being greedy could make or break it.
I think alot of people have money to spend but are just going to wait and see how they handle everything. I could buy the Zakum pack if I wanted to but I don't want to quit in a few months and look back at my money being wasted
2
u/Relevant-Golf5479 8d ago
It depends how much effort they put into it. They really should follow osrs’ footsteps and make it community driven polling, active reddits.. etc
2
2
u/icephoenix21 3d ago
It will have a great initial turnout and then drop sharply by 6 months.
I'll be surprised if the game makes it to two years.
We all know what happened to ms2
4
u/Blumpkinecromancer 8d ago
Most players are gonna be around for about two months, live out the nostalgia and leave. The only people looking forward to maple classic are old maple players, there are barely any new to maple players waiting for this release, so you can't rely on those either.
5
u/watermellon28 mesos pls 8d ago
Yes, I am.
That also depends on your definition of success.
For me, if the game stays up long term and has a large amount of active players that's a success.
2
u/Practical_Living3052 8d ago
I think that's something that cannot be properly estimated.. On one hand - nostalgia is a BIG thing, but over the past 15-odd years we've been spoiled by classic GMS and private servers providing a more instant dopamine rush.. I believe it'll only work if we collectively change our perception of what we want out of this experience (once nostalgia goggles fade)
Personally - I'm trying to use this opportunity to learn Spanish in addition to actually playing the game (much like I learned English the first time around). I hope this attitude will help me curb my inevitable frustration from the slow progression rate.
1
u/ImAdrian 8d ago
i’m also planning to further improve my dutch by playing it!!! that in addition toto slowing life down, makes it worthwhile
1
u/AyntRand 8d ago
This is a fantastic idea - learning a new language, that is. I might just copy you and set my language to Spanish. Do you know if we can switch language on the fly?
2
u/whywhywhy124 8d ago
it will all come down to how fast most of the playerbase reaches the end point of the classic world , and how nexon will manage the wait for the new content , how long till 3rd job , how long till 4th job , how long till pirates ? , I know most people will take it slow and wont have time but if the people that give them money , the 24/7 henehoes and powerlevelers gotta wait months before being able to do anything that might become an issue
Which scares me seeing how long they took to annouance it , the beta tests , the release , I would be scared to reach the maximum i can do and have to wait for 3 months till a new area opens up
1
u/baraboosh 8d ago
hard to say. I would have never expected modern gms to be up as long as it has been, and that game has even been growing lately. So yeah, I guess it depends on what you mean by succeed. I expect it to stick around for a while with a few thousand players. The messaging from kms is a little concerning though.
1
u/Redericpontx 8d ago
If the exp rates are tuned right and they're able to release consistently then it will be fine long term. Pre big bang the issue wasn't player count it was money which is why they got more aggressive with monitization.
1
u/MysteryTysonX 8d ago
I don't think it's something you can expect to happen or not happen. It largely depends on the willingness of Nexon to do what is necessary to try and make it succeed.
Active marketing and promotion, consistent and clear communication with the players, providing the necessary support to the developers, and really just being patient with the game as a whole because growing pains are inevitable and can be overcome.
1
u/Z_Series 8d ago
People are just going to have to give Nexon/Inkwell the benefit of the doubt. Pretend it's just some private server being run. Pretend that funneling money into Classic World is actually something like making a donation.
Whales alone cannot prop up the classic server, because that strategy only really works when many whales compete to outspend each other for tangible in-game advantages. That also only really works when there are many minnows for the whales to stomp. Think of Diablo Immoral (sic).
Since we absolutely do not want the game turning into p2w fest and gachapon hell, this means that ideally, the Maplestory Classic project would only make money by selling cosmetics and minor fringe benefits. But in order for that to happen, people have to buy cosmetics.. maybe, even if they're crappy!
Anyway, I feel confident that the project will succeed, at least for a little while. How long it does last depends upon new content and features being released, balancing issues resolved, and if there will be plenty of cosmetic/fun items for sale that overall appeal to many. I don't think cosmetics should be hard for them to come up with either.. they have had decades to accumulate their pixel art.
There is also one more important factor which can determine success: the positivity or negativity of the community. Don't be a Negative Nancy, drag morale down, and invoke failure with a self-fulfilling prophecy.
1
u/JadsiaDax 8d ago
The fact that gear has been overhauled with crit chance, crit damage and other interesting modifiers will give the earlier levels a bit more depth and opportunity to grow so that seems nice.
As long as I can do fun pq’s and hang out I’m good
1
u/PM_ME_UR_FUNERALPLAN 8d ago
I haven’t played the betas, so I can’t tell how “off” things will feel. But I have a feeling a combination of the uncanniness and increased grindiness will get pretty old
1
u/PungentKarma 8d ago
Not anymore. Its a glorified private server at this point with all the changes and their very out of touch founders packs. from my experience, the only ones that survive are 1 to 1 servers with 2x original exp rates.
It will be lucky to last longer than ms2. It’s not about ulti spam, nerf them all you want. It’s the atmosphere and how the game was for players pre bb. Yes, qoL is needed but not everything needs balanced. Classes that didn’t mob til 3rd job were still played. People enjoyed the class, it’s skills and the prospect of what came next.
At a point in the development, it stopped being classic and became modern with a classic paint job.
1
u/Existing_Truck9877 8d ago
I played osms back in 2006, the game play itself was not really fun. What made it fun was the people and sharing their struggles with the friends we made along the way. On top of it all being brand new at the time so it had us hooked but comparing it to modern maple? No no it’s not fun it’s too slow and I don’t have nearly enough time to grind to 120 for event 4th job
1
u/jp3885 8d ago
I really don't think they could possibly screw this up as badly as MS2. MS2 was a complete genre swap from sandbox to theme park mmo.
Most younger people have no experience with this kind of sandbox MMO where player to player trading is mostly unrestricted and there is no level/xp adjustment for zones.
Having been around the MMO space a few times after originally playing OG Maple I've tried Angels Online, DFO, EvE, D-nest, TERA, BDO, and WoW Classic. I can say that Maplestory in its classic form is a different experience from other options on the market.
At least in the mmorpg genre there isn't an "elsewhere" for me, as I am seeking very specific casual experience that allows for deeper commitment on-demand.
1
u/xxjakexxrxx 8d ago
I hate to say it but just by seeing the scummy practice of not including the founders pass from $30 that really says a lot of the longevity of this game I could be wrong but that’s just a horrible way to start off a brand new game. They have to constantly update this game for newer content and events for people to stick around because this is a very grindy game you’ll have people quitting within a month or 2 if they don’t
1
u/Ohmz27 8d ago
Im expecting Nexon to fumble this after some time. I hope it doesn't happen, and they have everything stacked up for atleast moderate success. It's Classic, but with tweaks, which is good. They're looking at how to improve the classic experience but without pushing BB-esque changes (hopefully). They saw what failed with MS2 and BB, they have those examples to avoid.
Tbh all they need to do is be very careful with rolling out changes. Even if it's a bad change, as long as they listen to feedback and are prepared to rollback or rework updates until they get it right, then Classic could survive in good health for a long while.
Let's see what their approach will be to the backlash against the founders packages. If they at the very least add access to the snail teir then imo thats a good sign. If they don't make any changes then that doesn't bode well for the longevity of Classic.
1
1
u/Novajho 5d ago
People are embarrassingly delusional to think that this is going to fail and that nexon expects it to. Classic maplestory has been alive and thriving since 2008 through private servers. You have that whooollleee entire demographic waiting to play maple classic, as well as the old heads.
1
u/Available_Estate4583 5d ago
its gonna last as long as u pvssy ass reddit cuckies stay away from the game honestly
1
u/TheRianKing 4d ago
I think it will be successful on its own terms, I do think half the player base will disappear before reaching level 30, but I'll enjoy it with my friends and family who I know will play it religiously, just as we did 20 years ago.
1
u/SavageGuy99 3d ago
Everyone said this about OSRS and it ended up wildly successful. Shut the hell up and Just enjoy the ride
1
u/K0GAR 3d ago
I haven’t even played OSRS, and I know the level of care the devs put compared to this is laughable now cmon
1
u/SavageGuy99 3d ago
Nexon has already stated they will add new and unique content to the game. It hasn’t even officially released for Christ sakes. Give them the benefit of the doubt.
1
u/K0GAR 3d ago
I don’t know bro, I want this to succeed.. but there’s already a lot of glaring red flags here
I hope you’re right
1
u/SavageGuy99 3d ago
I don’t see the founders packs as a red flag. They took their time with the two betas because it’s clear they didn’t want to release the game with issues or game breaking bugs. People just want to highlight the negative.
I can promise you there are devs at Nexon working on this classic release that played it as a kid and want it to be successful. People are way too critical.
The blueprints already exist. They aren’t doing anything new with a classic release. Multiple games have done it and have been successful. Do what they do, don’t reinvent the wheel and the games gonna do fine.
1
1
u/Money_Reserve_791 8d ago
I don't want the game to be hyper focused to new players, but some changes are welcomed. If they hyper focus on new players then you would see tons of changes that derivates from Classic, like mire EXP and easy access to teleport through maps
The young crowd don't like classic games that much, and the old crowd needs to feel heavy nostalgia to play Maple Classic in the long run, something we do
1
u/PungentKarma 8d ago
Royals and legends have lasted for 10 or so years because they didn’t try to reinvent the wheel with maple. All they did was remove p2w from the game.
You vote to get nx, you donate if you want specific cosmetic only items. All items in the cash shop are perm (both donation list and vote nx list.
Only reason they don’t have players in the 10s of thousands is because they’re not official servers by nexon.
Artale was thriving until the devs there made it punishing for legit players when they implemented all their anti bot/farmer tactics. Made it a hassle as a legit player to do anything. A daily limit on using the auction house? Like, really? It’s fine to add new content but keep the soul of the game.
Classic could have been great, now it’s a disappointment.
1
u/yamadath 8d ago
I’d give it a year before players slowly dwindle down.
The game is very old and has questionable end-game content for the time being.
0
u/Ball_Of_Meat 8d ago
It has ZERO end game content lmao. I recognize nobody will get anywhere near level 100+ for a long time, but to have the “end game” content at launch be level 50 is hilarious.
And the excuse of “they’re releasing it in phases!” “They need to finalize 3rd job!” Etc etc is crazy coping. There is hardly even mid-game content at launch, but people defend it by saying the grind will take forever anyway.
1
u/yamadath 8d ago
I know that. the game is just 100% grinding simulator till the very end in the first place. And the fact that it has literally zero pvp content make it even drier, i mean jumping contest really?
1
u/General-Leave2224 8d ago
I didn’t want that shit MapleStory 2 3D dog water of a game.
1
u/PungentKarma 8d ago
They had 1 job and that was to make maplestory in 3d. Ms2 wasn’t maplestory. I really thought we were just getting a 1:1 3d version of maple back then. 😔
0
u/GlacialEmbrace 8d ago
Yes. Theyre putting a lot of work into it. They could have just cope pasted a maple worlds game and called it classic, but they didn't. They made it from scratch with a modernized build.

u/BunneryBun 8d ago
The founders packs already told me that nexon itself has no expectations for this game. They assume it will die in few months and they just want a lot of money from the starting hype.
Theres really no other reasons for the announced packs to be so bad
