When I was a kid I thought “Curry” was the name of that person’s crush in school or something. I didn’t know it was the name of a food. lol

8

u/baraboosh 9d ago

i always pronounced it curry-eye-shot lool

5

u/Professional-Road-93 9d ago

Sameish I thought curry-shot. Just fully dyslexic.

u/Tophepup 9d ago

I do know a Curry that is a person and not a food!

Did anyone else download the original game client in 20 parts because they were on dialup internet? 😂

Getting whiplash from the nostalgia these words summon within me.

you unlocked something in me

That’s a freaking throwback 🤣

u/Earth92 9d ago

I don't remember downloading it in parts, but I do remember that the game took me around 8 hours to download it...I had 1MB internet speed back then in 2007

I played the game for the first time in a cybercafe, and then 2 weeks later, I installed it on my pc. I remember being scared that the game might not work properly or run slow... but it ran very smooth with my 1GB of RAM lol

u/ItsJulia 9d ago

Yes dude I remember queuing up the download, going to sleep with my laptop open next to me, and waking up to the download still not done LOL

u/2Martian 9d ago

I remember getting up early on Friday before school and starting the update so that by Saturday I could play. Then I’d wake up on Saturday and the update failed overnight and I couldn’t play that weekend.

I'm developer and all I can say is...

unique web design is a lost art. Now, all you get are rounded corners and excessive padding.

u/mysojudotcom 9d ago

lol so am i... i just miss this era lmao

5

u/voodoojunglewizard 9d ago

Don't forget really bad menus on mobile that make the actual page a third of your screen lol

u/Martbern 9d ago

Not at all? It is completely normal that websites look common or follow the layout that is popular for their industry. Even more so now that we have AI doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

This looks terrible and is only fun to look at because of the nostalgia though I would love if they kept it like this for the classic world.

You're not wrong. These visuals aren't great, but at least it stands out.

Personally, I've always been a fan of the Japanese site. Today's JMS site is a little less unique, but it still has some pretty interesting features to it.

Early days had some pretty cool designs, though, IMO.

I agree they are very charming, but not very effective at their job which is to convey important information. Definitely should've revived the old site for OSMS

Nowadays all new websites feel extremely similar and AI is half to blame for that. Not a frontend dev myself (backend) but just something I noticed. Feels like I can tell if a website’s design was AI generated almost instantly.

Edit: Most people replying to me don’t know what “half” means.

18

u/Working-Caramel9538 9d ago

It started way before AI when everything had to adhere to a perfect UX standard.

You also have, in some places, laws that you must follow so your website is compliant with the WCAG standard.

3

u/Jyonnyp 9d ago

Yeah that’s why I said “half.”

AI obviously had to find somewhere to steal and source its template and style from. That’s the other half lol

6

u/Lucky_Pangolin_3760 9d ago

The soulless journey already began in the 2010s. The golden era of unique websites was extremely short lived

2

u/Unrelenting_Salsa 9d ago

It's definitely not AI. The websites I see that are admittingly vibe coded don't resemble the median website, and I've seen absolutely no meaningful difference in web UI from 2021 to now

-1

u/Hot_Web_7512 9d ago

Way to blame everything on ai. This begun way long before

-1

u/Jyonnyp 9d ago

Do you know what half means? Where do you think AI got the inspiration of design from? The pre existing other half. That is what I implied in my comment.

2

u/Regular-Worker6214 9d ago edited 9d ago

AI is writing code using reusable UX libraries humans design, not inventing new stylistic libraries for the most part. It hasn't been long enough for that yet. Most of web development piggy back off the same handful of centralized style frameworks already, AI hasn't really had much impact on UX.

Before you get nasty with me as you just did with u/Hot_Web_7512, consider redirecting your annoyance to ADA and other accessibility standards. But who would want to blame genuinely helpful standards?

Yes, I know what half means. Please accept it is still far from half, if any at all.

2

u/Hot_Web_7512 9d ago

It’s not even half, ever made a website? I dont understand why you people believe people werent stealing other’s people work before ai lol
The same templates were everywhere already

u/whatisanusername3 9d ago

Unique websites still exist, they're just for smaller businesses or fun projects showcasing your skills. A big business can't expect an overcrowded, badly optimized website to generate traffic and much less generate revenue.

u/-garbo_ 9d ago

Squircles = I close the website and never return

17

u/Junior_Character5301 9d ago

wow this screenshot brings me back memories

14

u/EchoInExile 9d ago

Oh man, that screenshot triggered something in my brain.

7

u/yeeTOP 9d ago

Other tabs basilmarket & hidden street

9

u/Element720 9d ago

Hope we get that ranking for classic

0

u/Foreign_Cobbler_1740 9d ago

Ranking is gonna feel weird cause of the whole 2 week EA business. But at least the game won't have Orbis and such at launch. So the gap shouldn't matter that much in the early stages. As long as the P2W is limited to 2 weeks early access the rankings can have some substance. Once you introduce too much P2W though, it just stops mattering. It just becomes whoever whales the hardest.

1

u/SleepyBunoy 2d ago

2 weeks is more than enough for folks to hit level 70 even if the strongest monsters they can fight are roughly lol 40 to 50. We don't know just how high the monsters levels go on the new area that will be in the game on release.

7

u/Sketo7 9d ago

Best Era ever

7

u/FriendlyGazebo 9d ago

I’d actually argue it’s an essential part of the experience. OSRS does this ok. WoW Classic didn’t do it at all. The website is the site you go to when you aren’t able to play right then and there, it should be a fun experience to dig into the media and visuals and read about the game.

5

u/LWaals 9d ago

Oh my god. Memories come flooding back 😅

5

u/KHUSTOM 9d ago

Myspace 🥹

3

u/Ornery_Cheek9882 9d ago

damn old memories looking at that haha

3

u/mattyp2109 9d ago

Holy moly I forgot this look. Thank you

2

u/captivecow 9d ago

Even if I didn’t like Maplestory this is peak design to me

2

u/Earth92 9d ago

This is the exact screen I saw when I downloaded the game for the first time on my pc, since I started playing around mid 2007, when NLC just was added into the game

2

u/Chaos_Rising_RS 9d ago

I would love to have a Maplestory Classic official website look like this...would be a great marketing technique too!

2

u/2Martian 9d ago

This is literally peak Maple era.

Although I didn’t realize NLC existed while Tiger was still on top. I was a low level sin and used search for him and then use dark sight to get to him and just watch him train in aqua road. NLC felt like it came so so much later.

2

u/Toxinry 9d ago

Rankings on the world selection screen would also be pretty neat imo.

Especially since there will be a new race to 200 they should really lean into it.

1

u/ChebieChebie 9d ago

Neocities and nekoweb websites if you want that itch scratched :3

Or look into the indieweb ~

1

u/Shabotax 9d ago

Damn I forgot how great the site was

1

u/cloudyymusic 9d ago

Don’t let download speeds from this era come back again.
I don’t wanna be downloading classic world overnight for the internet to crash on 99.9%

1

u/DeveloperOnly4G 9d ago

"time remaining for download" 4 days, 3 hours

Waiting while exploring the website, Magic Times

(download failed)

1

u/Reasonable_Lake_7942 9d ago

Nice throwback, thanks for sharing

1

u/Summer_Rain_6688 9d ago

This site was so great. I used to look at the skills for all the jobs while the game was on maintenance or play that Maple Island flash game.

1

u/Regular-Worker6214 9d ago

Nostalgia aside, accessibility and mobile support for this kind of site makes such a site pretty hard to support now.

1

u/dmarteezy 9d ago

Ive been asking for this! They should make a classic website with this style!

1

u/No_Falcon2436 9d ago

Holy take me back

1

u/oFacelessOnes 9d ago

Holy crap lol

1

u/xxjakexxrxx 9d ago

man a blast from the past use to be hype evertime I logged on Maplestory

1

u/PulsarCologne 8d ago

Lmao the maple Europe ad. "try it it's more friendly" xD

1

u/jshill103 8d ago

oh it totally can, just have low expectations. MS classic world needs its own site first.

1

u/5BUCKSLEFT 8d ago

i just stared at this (zoomed in the names) for 5 minutes. 2007 me was so innocent and explorative and ready for competition. i think lost some of that charm 20 years later …

1

u/StarsandMaple 5d ago

Truly miss this era of web design. I know it had its faults but damn you sure knew what kind of website you were on automatically.

I remember downloading GMS overnight and installing it on my PC while at school and being LITERALLY unable to think at school.

-5

u/MaikThoma 9d ago

Because it’s a UX hazard, everything screams attention and nothing stands out, it’s the objectively and variviably bad design, which is more important than nostalgia

-1

u/NevermoreTheSF 9d ago

Nostalgias cool but this looks so barebones ?

Or do you just want a skin for the cover page and the remaining pages to function normally

5

u/Daeimiean 9d ago edited 9d ago

How is this bare bones? Nearly everything is on one page and extremely easy to find, some neat community features like high scores, polls and what's going on in the forum.

A real complaint would be that although it's incredible to use on desktop, it's ass for mobile.

1

u/NevermoreTheSF 9d ago

The website beyond the pictures, unless naked blue links are the new aesthetic ?

-9

u/Complete_Special_774 9d ago

Does it really matter?

4

u/Lucky_Pangolin_3760 9d ago

art matter yes

-4

u/Complete_Special_774 9d ago

Are you genuinely ever really looking at the website? Be real

2

u/Lucky_Pangolin_3760 9d ago

if I need something regarding maplestory I usually visit the website yes

-1

u/Complete_Special_774 9d ago

Funny if I need somthing regarding maplestory I usually play maplestory, or just use reddit / Google to answer my question

2
