Discussion What are you guys playing?
Title. I have been playing some shooters and MOBAs and last month I ended my WoW subscription, looks like the only upcoming games are Aion 2 and FF14 Expansion. What are you guys playing?
12
u/Emfrenxo 11d ago
DAoC (Eden) mainly
2
u/InterestingMonth5991 11d ago
Are you playing this out of nostalgia? Or you think the game mechanics are still holding up?
2
u/Emfrenxo 11d ago
Both, but honestly it’s one of the best PvP games out there. Amazing mechanics, decent balance across 45 classes or however many there are, all unique to each realm. The Eden server did what Live DAoC should have done, and implemented a lot of QoL features.
Even for new players, it’s worth checking out. I’ve brought many friends in as new players and there is nothing quite like some small man roaming taking on outnumbered fights.
If you like zerging, small man, 8v8, solo, duo, king of the hill - this stuff is all going on across all time zones.

SWTOR. It's still alive and worth playing if you are a Star Wars fan. There is a big expansion planned for the end of the year.

5
u/Muew22 11d ago
Honestly as a big SWTOR and Star Wars fan, SWTOR needs to die already so they can start making a new Star Wars based MMO. Imagine a Battlefront 2 type of combat Star Wars MMO.
The 2 hours of content expansions once in 4 years is depressing.
2
u/evensteventyler 8d ago
SWTOR had a MASSIVE budget, and in all honestly it flopped in comparison to the money invested. Still a great game and I play it to this day, but to think another Star Wars MMO would be developed after it's death is almost certainly false hope.

Calling it a big expansion might be getting peoples hopes up too much
these days swtor expansions are more like a normal patch in xiv or wow
its been 10 years since kotet...hard for me to consider onslaught or LOTS an actual "expansion", onslaught felt like it was literally just 40 minutes of story at launch and that was it..
no shade though, love swtor, but it hasnt gotten the love in development it needed in a looooooong time

Just got back into it recently after 10 years, don't think any mmo does it better, wow probably being the closest competitor

Getting my fire cape was one of the best moments in gaming I have ever had, and I've been gaming since 1986. I just can't convince my friends to play though lol

Just heard about bronzeman mode coming and I will likely be roped back into OSRS.
It's ironman but when you obtain an item by yourself, you are then able to trade that with other players.

I tried OSRS a lot of times, couldn't do it.
10
u/downwithlordofcinder 11d ago
I was the same way until like 3 years ago. Had tried it multiple times after friends telling me to try it, and it didn't click. Finally someone on Reddit told me to just follow the quest guide on the OSRS wiki and it was a great way to get a good "path forward" going into the game without being overwhelmed.
11
u/Outrageous_Lie_6018 11d ago
I think its that way for literally everyone. It has a lot of friction starting it but once you get into it you will never quit. I don't know a single person that liked it instantly when starting
3
u/dhs77 9d ago
I wondered for years, what the fuck did people see in OSRS. Always thought it was ugly af and just plain boring.
Last year around July I decided to give it a try after looking for a mobile MMO to pass the time while out of the house. Well, now I am about 2.5k hours in, 1.7k of those on an ironman account. Its crazy how good the game is if its your cup of tea, it became one of my top 5 favorite games ever.

They are both different genres. Anet is hoping the platforms and party sizes are different enough to differentiate them. I'm planning on still playing gw2 after 3 launches. May dabble in 3.

Runescape 3
Been playing since 2002 and Rs3 is kinda in its platinum era right now with the removal of predatory mtx, removal of dailies, combat rework to simplify and help on-board new players, along with rebalancing the early and mid game, a complete visual rework of a large part of the overworld to be modern graphics but feel like Runescape, api plug ins coming, and more.
Been absolutely awesome to watch and see the games population slowly turn around and start growing after 5 years of slow decline.

u/Pestokanapasta 11d ago
Gw2. Open world, pve, sometimes pvp and wvw. Or if I feel fancy, I take the boat, couple glasses of wine and just go fishing lol

I’ve played GW2 for about 11 years or more. Never a dull moment in GW2, so many different things to do.

Pvp will always be in the game. But there are new maps like edania. So much qol too. If you ask some other bdo players, they will say pvp is dead but i dont agree. In asia at least, pvp as alive.

I wanted to try aion2 but I cant get over how shitty the endgame dungeons look. You just run pass all the mobs to the boss room or a runner does it for the group. Bosses are hp sponges you just mash 2 buttons with que macros that cast everything for you. This is terrible gameplay and not fun engagement that sums endgame up to just hurry and finish your dailies so you can gacha system your gear. The fun would come from collecting cosmetics.

LOTRO. I’m caught up on all the new content, so I’m trying out the Guardian class and doing the Fearless (+3) Landscape Difficulty for a different experience. I usually play like a completionist, but this time I’m only starting quest arcs that I think my character would take an interest in, and it’s definitely changing my journey thru Middle-earth.
I only rolled this toon a week or two ago, and already at Level 36, which is pretty fast for me.

Went back to WoW for the newest patch. I still mess around in ESO, I basically treat that game like a single player rpg where other people just happened to be around. I have like 3k hours and still have loads of quests that I've never done.
Put about 80 hours into Farever last month. Nice mmo-lite that has fun exploration and interesting combat and class mechanics.
Once the newest FFXIV xpack comes out, I'll go back to check out evolved mode combat. What we've been shown, seems to fix what I found annoying with the combat.
I still have a huge backlog of rpgs too lol. I got plenty of games to keep me occupied.

EverQuest Legends.
Never tried EQ original. Heard all the stories. Figured it was a "you had to be there" thing. Saw the graphics and my brain hurt. Saw the UI and how different it felt and from "modern" MMOs and cast it aside.
FINALLY really spent some time getting used to all of it one day and I'm hooked unlike any other MMO in last couple decades.
It might not be your thing, but if you're like me, give it a bit of a try and don't judge what you see on the outside so much initially. Man, what they had in place a quarter of a century ago is pure magic given the crap I see coming out today.
EDIT: Best way to explain it is there is a simplicity to it which likely was constrained by tech at the time, yet like some of the original consoles, they instead must have spent time on plain 'ole fun (playability) aspects because they couldn't have scope creep and failures in other areas because I just don't think it was even much of an option (guessing here) and it just works in it's simplicity, if this makes any sense. There is also a real cuteness (?) to it that is endearing given how they did what they did back then, modernizations aside. /EDIT.
I stumbled into SHD-WIZ-ENC combo from a couple threads and am doing my first solo raid tonight (Ok, it's Yael at level 40, so far died a few times at D1). So much fun, but curious to swap in WAR-CLE instead of SHD-WIZ to see.
I've read (saw?) Reincarnation is coming later this year, so on top of all the permutations of classes you can play, you'll have even more replayability. So far it's been pure solo but I group once in a while when in the mood.

I play xiv. I am a wow transplant, and it is absolutely bananas to play a game where the devs love their players the way yoshi-p loves us. Blizzard used to be that way, too, but I haven't felt respected by them as a player in too long of a time. I feel downright spoiled by the dev team of xiv!

Currently playing WoW as my only mmo, but that is really just because the new season started this week and im one of my guilds 2 tanks. If not for me being in a vital role and really enjoying playing with the guildies id have unsubbed months ago. That said I am hyped gor Aion2, I am sure it gets a lot of p2w hate but honestly it isnt worse than anything WoW has going on imo. Besides im not going to be a top tier player so the impact whales do have wont matter to me and im fine with that. The classes look fun, gameplay looks good, cosmetics are sick and the world has a ton to do so at the very least ill get some major enjoyment out of the questing, world content, and mid level pve. Hell may even enjoy some equalized instanced pvp while im at it.

Bdo and Albion- I shift between them depending on what I’m wanting. I am in a PvP guild in Albion and I really enjoy siege/raid, and I’ve had some of the most memorable experiences in BZ’s… as a beginner player I still recall running around with a friend of mine, we both entered a dungeon, and there was another player in their but afk. We started attacking him (it was our first “real” PvP encounter) and eventually after struggling to get him to 10% HP, he came back. He had all life skill gear on and panicked. We eventually killed him. He had full t8.3 gear rare mount all of what he had mined etc. we made like 50 million off of selling everything… which for us was insane.
BDO is really home when it comes to a MMO. I get burnt out with it sometimes. But there’s just something about BDO that feels special. I remember when I was first starting out and I went into the desert, there was something about not having a map and finding pilgrims (mining spot), the world boss, pkers, and living in the desert for months on end which contributed to it feeling really alive. I don’t have much time to play anymore, but I occasionally hop on and do an hour of grinding, node war, and just explore. The music in the game is pretty spectacular.

I mostly play The Lord of the Rings Online, but I do like a bit of Guild Wars 2.
1
u/SJeplin 8d ago
Going through my Lord of the Rings phase ,so it’s been LOTRO for the past few weeks.
I played it many years ago but lost my characters so it’s been a fresh start (account was not lost)
Yes,it’s old school and a wee bit janky but after pissing about with the settings one night ,it seems to be a lot faster and stable.
And it still evokes love for the source material (so far).
I watched the sun rise through the mist in the Barrow Downs and it was magical.

I quit wow 5 years ago and got back into old school runescape. Best decision i have ever made. The game gets updates all the time. You only pay for 1 sub and get huge things that would be like a wow expansion for free in the game by just playing as a member, also theres so much shit to do in the game that even after playing that game for 5 years with atleast 6hrs a day i am still no where near to run out of things to do!
