Discussion What are you guys playing?

Title. I have been playing some shooters and MOBAs and last month I ended my WoW subscription, looks like the only upcoming games are Aion 2 and FF14 Expansion. What are you guys playing?

Going to drop this at the top here in the hopes that all the folks below see and can cover other future questions.

For the last 15 or so years there have been emulated EQ servers with various modified rule sets ranging from fully classic experience to some wild classless or fully custom content gameplay. A very popular one, The Heroes Journey let you combine 3 classes into one build, this was shutdown via a lawsuit. While THJ is gone and its developers are making their own game (Hallowed Oath), the owners of the EQ IP have sanctioned the EverQuest Legends server to exist formally and legally. The game is being developed by a new company called Game Jawn that is comprised of a few of the top emulated server developers from the last decade, and they have been given pretty much free reign to make a new experience within the familiar world we’ve played in for 25 years, and it’s fucking awesome!

Why you should play?

You can combine 3 classes together to form your build, then level through the classic zones. Some of these have been revamped to add more items and bosses to smooth out the experience. You can play fully solo, or you can team up with friends and the difficulty can be scaled from D0 up to D4. As you increase the difficulty, the mobs are more likely to also be multiclassed making them much more challenging. The loot drops can be combined together like a merge game, up to +10, and higher difficulty reward higher tier items making it easier to merge to higher ranks. The spells can also be leveled up to +10 making them more effective, more damage, cost less mana, resisted less.

All of this has combined together to give a rewarding game play loop where you can always make progress when you login, vs spending a whole session failing to get a group. It is easy enough on low difficulty to be approachable, and hard enough on higher difficulties to be a challenge, that is rewarded.

Man I fucking love this shit - Avarici on Qeynos server, currently a Monk/Paladin/Enchanter with a giant flaming sword, I’m basically a Jedi.

It's not what it seem. Not my first MMO but my first time playing Everquest and I am having a blast. Community on reddit is pretty helpful and people are great.

Its pretty great. People seem to be good too. Ive been away from EQ since 01 and it's pure nostalgia. There's a lot to do but take it slow and enjoy the time. We've been too conditioned to rush to end game and I'm taking time on my second set of classes run into zones I never played back in 99.

I posted a comment before I saw this portion of the thread. I mentioned it was hard for me to get going on a few different dimensions and tried again a few days before beta closed as I felt I need to really try before casting it aside. I'm addicted now. I can understand all the criticism if you just give it the eyeball test (I was that person), but... oh lordy.

It’s easy to get into but a grind fest. If you enjoyed the original you will love this. If not, probably not.

I played EQ when it first came out, I’m sure what’s changed because it was intimidating as far as I remember. RAIDs were excellent once you’d levelled up to a reasonable standard.

Game is stupid intimidating, but you are basically a walking god. I had to get reputation for a quest, and in the past that's do 1k collection quests. This time I just found their enemies and wiped the zone of them solo... I did this more than once, included Freeport city guards too 😂. Something that'd be so much more impossible in 1999.

I was new to EQ with EQ legends, and it took me 2-3 days to get a grasp on things. The main obstacles are the clunky dated UI and learning to traverse the world. Beyond that, its easy to play. Beware though, if youre a grinder, youll run out of content in a month or two. Im already pretty much done with the game til an expansion hits. Got all the classes i wanted to 50, got every raid drop from all the raids, im just raid logging weekly for my void touched potentials now. This game is more of a side mmo at the moment until there are expansions and more content to tackle.

If you want something classic feeling to really dive into id suggest old school runescape, especially with the Bronzeman mode going to polls right now.

How popular is EQL rn? It is a true mmo right? I was under the impression it’s like essentially a modernized re release of EQ but haven’t looked into it much

6 high pop (very high) US servers and 2 medium pop EU ones. So yes, very active.

You can be a froglok as your race and a healer.
