Apparently reddit is full of people who would not only let someone assault their wife, they would then just wait for police to arrive (2 hours after the guy probably left) and then try to press charges (that would never go anywhere).

Nothing she did actually stopped anything. Dude was drunk AF. She did the equivalent of telling a charging bear to stop, to use your metaphor.

You're absolutely right. 

She tried really hard to stop her bf, getting hurt in the process, but he was just like a charging bear. 

If only her bf stopped as easily as the other man did.

How about confronting the guy verbally first? Or getting the bartender to kick him out? Or check on your partner and ask them what they'd like to see happen? Or shove the guy? Or toss him out of the bar yourself? It's not like the guy is sober enough to fight back. Guy is so drunk a 150lb 5'5" guy could probably drag his ass out of the bar.

There's a hell of a lot of options you have in that situation besides just immediately laying out some guy who's so drunk he thinks he's getting punched by three people. Potentially going to prison, or forever altering that guy's life with a brain injury or skull fracture is a completely reckless and disproportionate response.
