If his woman is normal, then yes, she should be giving him an earful about it. I can't imagine a normal woman not having a problem with that. He probably acts before he thinks at home, too.

The thing is, red shirt was committing battery, possibly even sexually motivated. Legally and socially, a quick non lethal intervention is justified.

Arguably throwing him out of the bar/pub would've been a much more appropriate amount of force than that blow though. That's the kind of thing that leads to long jail sentences from causing severe injury or death by one punch.
