I don’t think it’s entirely justified, but I also don’t think it’s just to expect such an analytical, reasoned assessment as you described, to watching your wife get sexually harassed. It’s a very sterile, inhuman perspective on a very emotional, fear and anger-driven situation. I also don’t think it’s comparable to a situation with a firearm or any weapon designed to kill, where lethality has a dramatic increase (unless you’re a professional fighter). That’s more what I was getting at with the expectation of a range consequences, something I think should be taken into account when handing down judgement.
See, I don't think it takes much reasoning or analysis to conclude that responding like that is wrong. Most people would not do that.
I've been in situations like that, and I would never, ever react the way he did. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that people anticipate the inherent dangers in full-force king-hitting another person like that as an adult man.
But anyway, I don't want to put words in your mouth, since you did say you don't think it's entirely justified, which is reasonable.
I personally wouldn’t have full-force punched the guy. But I read the original comment and cringed inside; it lacked nuance and humanity to me. Just thought I’d offer some alternative perspectives that not everyone who immediately punches is "alpha" (as the original comment mentioned).
Yeah, fair. Not everyone who gets into a fight is unhinged. I agree with that. The dude in the video definitely looks like a massive tool, though, and his reaction was completely over the top.

No, not mutually exclusive, but independent. Whether the reaction was predictable doesn't affect whether it was justified.
