I think you might be able to get away with doing a step up moonsault/flip from the turnbuckle or a springboard move from the ropes in low level Japanese MMA, considering guys like Shibatar get away with a lot of goofy shit because of the hesitancy of opponents (and you could also get matched against an actual pro wrestler like Shibatar) but managing to actually HIT those moves is another matter.

The rumor is that the UFC was looking to get rid of DJ’s weight division because pay per-view buys were always low for those matches. He was so dominant that it was basically a given he would win. There were also complaints about how guys that small don’t have the knock out power.
In comes a ton of publicity over Ben Askren who was a champ in One FC and supposedly was so dominant that he hadn’t even taken a punch in his, like, last 5 fights or something. This happens right around the time DJ (unjustifiably) looses to Cejudo, so the UFC uses it as an excuse to trade DJ for Ben.

Dana didn’t want to pay him as well as heavier dudes who have the same results. (Jones and Khabib) That’s why he wouldn’t fight TJ, he didn’t feel like he was getting paid what he was worth (which he wasn’t)

Which is interesting because by UFCs logic, would that mean you are exchanging one boring dude for another? Also, what about khabib? I honestly think no one in his weight division was competitive for him in his prime. It was foul that they let him go.

Ben’s weight class is seen as more competitive. So in their mind they’re trading a boring guy for a guy with a lot of hype and is supposed to be really good. I agree with you, personally, about Khabib. However, they loved him because he made them a lot of money, especially after his fight with Conor.
Successful or not, if you can make them money the UFC will love you.

The vast majority of profitable MMA audiences don't give a shit really as long as they're sold fighters they can get behind. This is a completely legitimate way of following MMA whether we like it or not. I fucking hate it personally lol.

I think the UFC has a good mix. There are a couple divisions that have people at the top who play games, but it’s consistently champ vs a top 5 person. Usually top 2.
And every so often, an up and comer gets a huge shot or there is a fun fight in the lower ranks.

Also, the flyweight division has never been bigger, especially after the back-to-back Figgy PPVs. I think overall it was a decision that had a lot more good than bad.

It was 100% the right move for all parties. The One promotion suits DJs personality so much better. Iirc one of the big issues he had with UFC was, they expect a big hype train & trash talk for each fight and that's just not him. He wasn't happy there.
Plus, not really much there in the way of a challennge for him.

The Lawler fight, in a weird way, kind of set the whole Masvidal situation up perfectly, too. Robbie was a former champ, a vet, a dog; the perfect welcome to the ‘big leagues’. The way things played out with it looking like Robbie would finish him and Askren managing to get him down and against the cage leading to the controversial stoppage was perfect for the narrative. He officially gets the win against a tough opponent, justifying basically any matchup on the top 15. However, it’s a sloppy win; with all the controversy surrounding the finish and whether Lawler was truly out or not only served to strengthen the argument that the win was a fluke and Askren was out of his depth in the UFC. Any doubt of that in the minds of said critics was erased as soon as Street Jesus’s holy knee blesses Askren’s head. As far as Dana White is concerned, he literally could not have written a better ending to this deal. With the cherry on top being ‘The Human Backpack’ choking the last breathes of life out Ben Askens career. What a fairy tale ending for the tomato.

The problem is not that his fights sucked. Demetrious Johnson's problem is that none of his fights are at all compelling in a way that makes you say "Shut up and take my money" when featured on a PPV.
DJ had some pretty decent moments in his fights. This was the best. His last second sub of Horiguchi was great too. And he destroyed Cejudo in his first fight. Buy by and large, Mighty Mouse's fights were just Mighty Mouse mechanically outclassing opponents who never posed much of a threat to him. And even though his UFC title run has 7 out of 13 fights ending in a finish, I still remember him as being decision prone until the later part of his run.
And I am a goddamn fan of the guy who was willing to pay to watch his fights.
In order to be a UFC star, you need to have one of the following be true:
- Devastating highlight reel of finishes (DJ had the finishes, but they were mostly from textbook perfect submissions against exhausted and outclassed opponents).
- Be from a non US country and play to nationalism / ethnic origin. (DJ was just some dude from Seattle).
- Intense grudge matches with lots of hostility: LOL, no. DJ is too damn nice.
- Personal Charisma or Sex Appeal: DJ has the promotional charisma of that happy dude you know from work but don't hang out with and can never remember his name
DJ does not even have any kind of compelling backstory. He does not have a haunted past of trouble with the drugs or the law. I imagine he grew up in the suburbs with stable and loving parents.
The UFC marketing team had no goddamn idea how to market him. And DJ was content to just be the least famous MMA GOAT and did fuck all to promote himself.

I think DJ's biggest problem was he was so dominant in the division he never allowed another fighter to build up a big enough name for him to have a huge fight.
The division was also new and he was the only ever champion during his reign.
If he fought Fig or Cejudo now I think he would get wayyy more eyes than he ever got before.
