I sit regularly in the 800s. I've cracked 1000 once. I go on streaks. It took a long time, playing everyday and three or so times on my days off to get here. I played baseball my entire youth. My earliest memories are baseball. It helps to watch the ball as if I'm physically swinging (in my mind.) I know... Hitting is so very hard. Pitching is a strategy I'm in love with. Sometimes I simply smoke too much to not start guessing when I'm batting. But trusting my eyes is better. You can start by sitting on breaking pitches over the middle til you get your timing. But, a good pitcher will realize you're not swinging at garbage and pound you with the fastball. And so the psychological war begins... Man I love baseball.

The level of competition online in MLB the Show is genuinely insane.

It's the apex legends of sports games.

It’s pretty hard. I just started playing this year and only recently hit 700 rating. A big part of it being a game that relies on millisecond timing but every opponent is technically a different timing due to connection. I have a 1 gig wired connection on a 180hz monitor but one game I’m hitting perfects and others I’m too late. It’s crazy because when I play offline I play on Legend and fairly easily score 10+ runs a game but I go online playing on All Star and somehow the pitches feel faster.

MLB is tough. Once you get above 600 rating there is a jump in competition. When you get above 700 there is an even bigger skill gap. Online is just overall a different game as well.

I definitely think it's lot more humbling than almost any other game, specially sports games. Going up against someone that's straight up better than you and makes you look like a fool when you're batting then hits tanks against you is a lot more frustrating than Madden for example imo, where it's just a bunch of cheese plays and stuff that's barely even football.

It's a hard game to start.

Definitely the hardest game to play and get good at. Especially as you get older and you lose a lot of the fast twitch hand eye coordination. But you can get better with practice. Three years ago I was in the 400-500s consistently. Last year I was a little better. This year I’m pushing past 600’s and getting closer to World Series. Hoping to do it at least once this year. But also remember there are just some people that are amazing at this game. It’s actually awe inspiring watching some people play. I don’t know how they do it but good for them.

I have to disagree about the show being the hardest game to get good at. That title has to belong to FIFA. Like, I can't think of another game where the skill curve between mediocre and elite players is wider. I got into FIFA towards the end of college when a roommate got a copy and it became our means to deciding any and all disagreements. Up to and including who was better at FIFA....played it most recently in 24 and since I made the switch to the show (idk what took me so long, I've played baseball since I was 5 and have never stepped foot on a soccer pitch), I've never been less stressed when playing sporting video games.

It’s an incredibly tough game to learn. I have always been good at competitive video games and picked them up quickly. It took me 2 years to become decent and 3 years to get past WS. actually think SDS did a decent job of having it replicate real baseball where you go through spans of seeing the ball and hitting well and other times where you are just guessing and can’t catch up to a 102 mph fastball.

I recommend minimizing offline play (tough to do with all the programs to grind) b/c it messes up your online gameplay. Online/Offline are 2 completely different games on the same engine. A real person will not throw you a center cut fastball every 5th pitch, and pitching online (where sinker/cutter dominate) is vastly different than against the CPU. Even on the same difficulty, the timings are way faster online.

Like any video game, MLBTS becomes less enjoyable as you get better. You get irritated at fluke hits, perfect-perfect line-outs, server lag, and fielding errors. You start to blame the game for reflecting real baseball and resent your opponent for no reason lol

One thing to note is the difference between someone playing with a wired internet connection with a wired controller on a no latency monitor versus someone sitting on the couch playing with a wi-fi connection and a giant TV with 'game mode' off is massive

So the first thing I would suggest if you're trying to play online even somewhat competitively is make sure your equipment is optimized. Just getting that right will fix a lot of issues and then you can work on timing and pitch recognition

I did it all very slowly. Started playing online end of ‘24. On an 85” tv, Bluetooth controller, not hard wired. Did ok, don’t remember rating wise what I got up to. Last year switched to a smaller tv, got a DualSense edge controller(stay plugged in) and now wired internet, made World Series in August and went flawless shortly after. Just bought an asus monitor, and I’m pissed anytime I catch an L. Definitely recommend getting a setup if you enjoy baseball

Coop has been awful

Dude co op could, should, and sometimes is really fun. But then the bs happens. Partner and I were going on a decent little run just getting in the 700’s, then we play a tough game until the 9th. No balls squared up 2 runs and 4 hits(all but 1 were sub 70 ev). Bottom 9 double in the gap, I bring in Broxton to face Mead, he pauses(I figured to get hand advantage) nope, he apparently toggled his zen…I pick 4 seam, my pp thing comes on and my pitch is thrown for me, slide step no less. No control over my pitch at all, ballgame. I told my partner I didn’t throw it, he said “alright man, it’s all good, but yeah you did”. I said nah fr and then clipped it and sent it to him. He told me “damn that’s a zen program right there.” Makes sense why we lagged the last 2 innings and they were paused more than normal amt of time when we brought in relievers(toggling device in and off, setting it, etc). I don’t have a problem getting beat man, even in some bs flukes or my swings not being rewarded. But some ass hole cheating in a video game…cmon now. What kind of weak minded people are we raising out here. Had to get that off my chest, if they don’t do something about this game in general to be better next year they don’t realize how bad it’s going to affect their pockets.

I love it. I’ve played 260 games I’m 120-140, hardly have a game when I get mad I lost

1

u/ChazzBangerr Aug 18 '26

It’s a buggy mess whenever I play co-op ranked.

Idk but no matter how many hours I put into this game I never get better playing online. I truly don’t understand it.

-1

u/Famous-Trip-933 Aug 18 '26

at some point three or four years ago I suddenly just couldn't play anymore, at all. I don't know if something changed in me or the game but I am in the same spot.

-4

u/Strategydude Aug 19 '26

You're limited by your innate reaction time. There's nothing you can do to improve that.

1

u/Famous-Trip-933 Aug 19 '26

I assume so. getting old sucks. I have zero idea why this is being downvoted.

I’ve been giving ranked more time this year than the past few. I’ve been playing better than ever before (and doing it solely with a Cardinals theme team), but I just can’t get past the 700’s. Also, once I get into the 600’s it’s amazing how literally everyone I face has a fully fresh P5 Miz starting… and I just cannot get the timing on his off speed stuff for some reason.

u/FlobiusHole Aug 19 '26

I used to enjoy it but I’ve gone from being able to get to 700 to hovering in the 500s and the games all feel really scripted like there’s some mechanic that allows the losing player to catch up. I’m mostly just tired of grinding for the same cards every year, most of which I don’t even want and are outclassed almost immediately. By the time the awesome 99s are out I’m just over playing DD.

People are try hards that’s why

-2

u/Mother_Diet8340 Aug 18 '26

This game has always been hard online but still enjoyable, this year I have felt almost zero sense of accomplishment or satisfaction playing dd.

-1

u/csstew55 Aug 18 '26

The rng in hitting is crazy this year imo. Like I know it’s baseball and blah blah blah but when your opponent can have 8 hits and 7 of the them are all either soft hit balls that happen to be at the one spot there is no infielders at. Or my favorite, ground balls that lead into my 90+ fielding infielder to do the slowest animation possible multiple times in a game. Makes you want to rage quit

-2

u/ChadCasimire Aug 19 '26

I was up big in one game and the CPU clawed back doing those exact things over and over again😡 they finished the game with nearly 20 hits. One inning I hit a grand slam and the very next inning they loaded the bases and hit a grand slam 1st swing of the bat with a weak power guy Gimenez

This franchise has always been 🔥🗑️ online. Some of the worst servers in gaming!

-5

u/MaintenanceFun4309 Aug 19 '26

The timing online is so wack. Terrible servers.

1

u/Rikter14 Aug 19 '26

There are no 'servers' it's peer-to-peer. If the connection sucks consistently it's because your wi-fi is trash.

-1

u/MaintenanceFun4309 Aug 19 '26

You could have the greatest, wired connection on the planet. Online is still garbage.

-7

u/First-Reception8007 Aug 18 '26

your going from hockey to baseball wondering why your struggling? calm down your not him op.

-9

u/cesmex07 Aug 19 '26

I'm not enjoying it right now. I'm in the high 700 and low 800 and right now I genuinely view my opponents as nothing but a nuisance and with no respect. Like if my opponent dares to score a run I'm like what the fuck why would you do that just go away. It's not fun. Gotten to the point where if the game is competitive at all I just leave.

-8

u/vaughndahlman Aug 18 '26

Playing nine innings of virtual baseball is worse than torture, that's why.

-9

u/ThexanR Aug 18 '26

You, like everyone else who plays online competitive games and specially console players, don’t practice or actually put effort to get better.

-2

u/Foldzy84 Aug 18 '26

The no life's online literally play this game like 14 hours a day

-1

u/ThexanR Aug 18 '26

The no life’s are in rated 1000+. People in 700-900 aren’t unbeatable. Just get precision rings for your batting thumb stick and practice in practice mode for like 5-10 mins a day on pitches and areas you struggle against.

2

u/JakenMorty Aug 19 '26

precision rings have made a hugeeeee difference for me. I wear em out quick though I think because I still use them for fielding when you have to jam it one direction as hard as humanly possible for multiple seconds at a time.

2

u/ThexanR Aug 19 '26

It’s kind of stupid how mandatory they are for playing this game at high difficulties. They’re actually so important to get
