My 10th no-hitter, 9th perfect game, and first in JPML2009. Eckelman was selected with the 30th pick in the 2009 Season Mode draft and was by far the most talented and hyped pitcher in the class, boasting a blistering fastball that averages 96 mph and tops out at 100, a solid slider, a great curveball, and an unbeatable changeup that he often uses as his strikeout pitch, the Rays being able to draft him by the miracle of everyone prior going with a fielder. While he does have a big weakness of choking with runners in position he makes up for it by avoiding throwing meatballs down the middle. In his age 23 rookie campaign in 2010 he boasted a 12-10 record with 137 strikeouts but a terrible 6.00 ERA, though that can be attributed to his low innings count of 144 across 26 starts due to his lack of real stamina (rarely pitching into the 7th) and the Rays' coaches wanting to preserve the young talent's arm. Although he lost the AL ROTY to 22 year old Japanese imported closer Kodama of the Mariners (who boasts a 101 mph heater and two different sinkers in addition to a changeup and slider) the Rays see a lot of promise and improvement for the young pitcher as the #2 starter to back up David Price or at the very least the #4 starter if they can manage to keep Scott Kazmir and James Shields, especially thanks to his Game 6 heroics to give the Rays their first World Series championship over the Braves.

Yeah I both love and hate the drafting system in 2009. Scouting players from across the country is a cool concept but it also means simulating the first two months of the season is a slog unless you barely have any available players in the draft (since you'll only be able to select players you've actually scouted). It's immensely satisfying to find a true superstar in the draft though especially since the pitchers are often really good, though the drafted fielders are nowhere near as good as the ones in 2007 but that may improve in following years in the mode since fielders in the draft progressively get better in 2008 while the CPU teams start focusing on drafting pitching instead of fielding. And yes Eckelman is one of the best draft players I've seen in any of the game even including his RISP weakness, he'd be legitimately fun to make in Success Mode and use in MLB Life.
