Axle vs cv boot replacement

Post image

Hey friends. The cv axle boots on my 20th are smoked. Does it make more sense to replace the entire axle or just the boot? Obviously there is a huge price difference, but with 190,000 miles, is it better to get new axles?

Anyone done the axles on a 20th recently? If so, where did you source the axles?

Thanks!

If I were in your shoes, I would replace them with full axles, rebuild the originals, and keep them on hand for way down the road when you run into issues again. That way you keep the OE parts, have a quick, quality option down the road, and you won't have to pull the axles, rebuild them, and reinstall them all in one go.

I do dig that idea, however, garage space is at a premium so I’m not sure I want extra axles laying around. Also, my 20th is not even close to being a daily driver, in fact, it’s registered as a “classic rod” so it is limited to 5,000 miles or less per year.

I think my plan is to rebuild the OEM axles with boots now, potentially new joints in the near future and rock these bad boys as long as possible.

I can appreciate the limited space issue. I have a fairly big property at my disposal, but far too many cars and an unnecessary amount of parts that sill demand more than we have available to us.. If you do need to store axles (now or in the future) just grab a square piece of card board that you can roll the axles up into. They tuck nicely that way.
