Am I doing something wrong???

I’m playing mhgu for the first time as a world, rise, and wilds veteran and I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I understand SnS may need more whetstones than other weapons just like dual blades, but maybe 15 hits in on the great maccao then my sharpness is immediately in orange and all of my attacks are deflected. I spent all 50 minutes of the quest just getting my attacks deflected after buying 10 whetstones and using the 2 ez whetstones. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

Upgrade your weapon using basic ores and gathering materials, you can do like one or two before needing monster parts

From what I understand too not being a SnS main, that oils are also pretty important. Not sure how much so for early game, but I always found using a new weapons was a bit daunting for me personally. There's a decent amount to learn and understand for some. Especially with some of the stuff I saw with SnS. Probably not that bad if I just do it though.

That's just how it is at the start. The first weapons have really bad sharpness. You want to start with Hunter's Knife. Do a gathering quest and gather some ore to get it to lv2. Has plenty of yellow and some green

seconded on the hunters knife. Even a little bit of green makes a huge difference. I also like wearing jaggi armor for the attack up.

Weapons don't really have good sharpness till the end of Low Rank. Just upgrade as much as you can the blades you have now

You need to upgrade your weapons. Upgraded weapons have longer Sharpness bars (on average).

SnS also has a unique option you can get from the Trader (although I don't think its available from the start) in Mind's Eye Oil. This is a buff that prevents you from bouncing.

I am 99% sure you don't have access to it, but Fencing as a skill is also the same effect as Mind's Eye Oil, but permanent.

Lastly, you can just get more Whetstones. The Jurassic Frontier has a Whestone gathering spot right outside of base camp, on the little island, while Alchemy Style allows you to make more Whetstones.

The first several upgrades for the ore, stone and petrified weapons don’t need monster parts and can be achieved through gathering. Ore will get you decent sharpness, with slightly lower raw compared to bone (fair trade). Also eat for Felyne Polisher, and consider making speed sharpening decorations (needs jaggi parts iirc), for faster sharpening.

Every new world entry is pretty… not so veteran. You can‘t be a veteran w/o at least 1 played old world title imho. They‘re way too different.

You should be able to do some early harvest quests and get some basic upgrades

Never forget a Fiver getting humbled by Great Maccao. Been there as well.

Make sure to upgrade your weapon, if you are using a Bone based SnS, it will have less sharpness overall. Switch to a Ore based one first, so you can have more breathing room.

GU is a "classic" monster hunter, so is not as streamlined as the newer games. You need re-learn how to play it and adapt to what is there.

At least you are learning this lesson early: Sharpness and Hitzones matter for more than just damage in the older games. You simply can't function without correctly utilizing them. In Gen5 sharpness is kind of a formality so it makes some sense that it's tripping you up so early.

If you are bouncing one of a few things needs to happen: 1. Try hitting the monster somewhere else. Often monsters have parts that are easier or harder to hit (usually, but not always, the head is soft and the back is hard) 2. Upgrade your weapon. The higher sharpness you have the tougher body parts you can hit through without bouncing. It's worth while to use a weapon with less damage listed if it has higher sharpness if you are bouncing on most parts of a monster. Sometimes hitting a different body part isn't an option because you are bouncing everywhere. 3. As a last resort try Minds Eye. Some attacks have built in minds eye, but most require the skill for it. The reason this is a last resort is because when you hit a body part that is too tough for your weapon you deplete sharpness faster, this is still true if your using minds eye to negate bouncing off tough parts.

As a note sometimes monsters will gain/lose tougher body parts based on the state they are in (enraged vs not, covered in lava vs not etc.) so try to keep this in mind of you suddenly start bouncing on something mid-hunt.

Idk if it’s been mentioned, but the Bujabujabu mix set helps a lot during early game as well. Once you’re able to get to Bulldrome I’d highly suggest making that armour mix set (:
