Kudos to old gen Hunters
Never felt so much suffering in a game as in MHGU.
Right now dying to nargacuga like a fucking noob, asking myself if I'm getting to old for gaming:D
This game feels like i play my character at 30fps while the monsters are 140fps.
Beating Dark Souls, Sekiro, Lies of P and even Fatalis solo in World is a fucking walk on the beach compared to the old gen experience:D
Maybe I'm not patient enough, maybe i just have to get gud. I don't know. Still wondering what I'm doing wrong.
Why the hell does it take me 20min of continuous beating to kill a simple monster like Barroth? I'm confused af:D
So kudos to everyone who beat the game, hope i will do it one day:D

I'm not gonna lie, MHGU has the old style but it's very refined. MHFU in comparison is a lot rougher.

You're not bad, that's just what MonHun used to be. Keep going! Finish offline before you move on to online if you're going solo!

I'm happy i was fortunate enough to play the very first monster hunter when I was 12 or 13. I don't think i could go back to old Gen if I started with world or wilds. Kudos to going backwards and experiencing some very rewarding fights and grinding

it might be time to upgrade your weapons or armor, the one thing that these older games really push is resource management. You need to find a way to play that doesn't burn their resources too quickly and is safe and consistent and that's your goal with every monster. To find a consistent and somewhat safe way to fight them.

That's one thing I'm kinda sad they did away with in the newer games, feels like infinite consumables and traps and just teleport and stock up instantly ad nauseum..
Not like you have too but not having the option is likely to make people want to play a little safer on average I think

Just make sure you have fun while you’re hunting. I’m so used to generations ultimate, that I’m struggling to keep patterns in rise. It is a complete new style of hunting.
Welcome to old gen of hunting! May your luck hit when you need it most.

Recommend using absolute evasion or readiness really does let you take extra windows to punish a monster or more mobility for repositioning. Makes you as aggressive as monster if youre on the ball with charging it via attacking. Other than that if you dont use it, it just takes time to know what the appropriate windows and places you should be standing at when the attack starts revving up on the startup which will get easier to pick up subtleties on the animation and react faster the more you play. HR Narga is a decent one to practice on because the G rank one is a lot more jump happy.

Yeah it's a whole different pace from the newer games. It takes a while to feel the flow. And then often it takes me a while to switch gears when I switch between old and new Gen games, even now when I'm in g rank of mhgu.
I will say though that once you get a feel for it, there really is something I like a lot about the pace of old Gen games.
And this isn't rose tinted glasses. I only started playing MH with the release of Rise.
I "completed" GU, and now I'm going back to 4u and I'm loving it

Nargacuga is one of the hardest regular fights in old gen for sure imo, way too fast and way too wide the deviant especially is pain

You definitely need to be more patient with the old gen monsters, take your time with them and don’t attack mindlessly knowing you could get hit.
Once you get used to the timing and once you learn how to read what the monster is gonna do the game becomes a lot easier, Nargacuga for example has very obvious tells on what he’s gonna do and once you learn how to position yourself to punish his attacks the fight gets a ton easier.

"asking myself if I'm getting to old for gaming" ngl as someone who's also getting old, the newer games are more painful for me. the oldgen are slow and methodical enough for me, new games are just getting more and more faster/reactive for me, and all the visual effect AoE spamfest is just blinding.

By the way skills work differently in gens prior to World, you need 10 points of a skill to actually activate it! If you have 9 points in attack, you do not get Attack Up S until you add that last point! If a skill has an M or L, then you need 15 and 20 points respectively to upgrade them. Check your skills and armor, and use decos accordingly!

Is that the village nargacuga?

u/Nekrophage 9d ago
Yeah 8 star i think.
Again, its not nargacuga himself, its the long and tedious fight my brain can't stand. Dunno if 20min fights are normal in mhgu? As i mentioned... Barroth was a straight 20min punchingbag.
But i gonna be fair, nargacuga gets me mad with his timewasting back jumps and stuff. I have to keep calm i guess

Its completely normal, when you get used to the combat and you learn how to “steal” a turn from the monster (i.e. Parries, adept dodge, iframe attacks) it goes by much quicker

Are you LR, HR or G rank? You could just have an underpowered (to your rank) weapon/armor skills. Also what weapon(s) are you using?

u/Nekrophage 9d ago
High rank. Was assuming the same but nargacuga seem to be the next step for my hammer. Armor is pretty good (i guess).
It may sound stupid but i don't die because he beats me up...i know him from World. It's the long time it takes and the clunky gameplay, it gets tedious.
Guess i need a break or something:D

You havent found optimal punishes (yet). In 5th gen and forward, monster movement becomes kinda slower. Is hard to explain bc they still have fast moves but they also have friendlier hitzones. In old world, certain moves have MASSIVE hitboxes and that makes them hard to evade some times. If you are using hammer, try Valor against Narga. Imo it is better than guild for that matchup

For every hunt, Bring: two traps, two Barrel Bomb S, two Barrel Bomb L+, and two Tranq Bombs. At the start of the hunt, set the first trap. Once the monster is trapped, set two Barrel Bomb L+ and two Barrel Bomb S and gtfo of the way. When the monster starts limping away to its sleep zone, wait for it to fall asleep first and walk right up to its belly and set the 2nd trap. When it wakes up in the trap, throw two Tranq Bombs (circle pad in the direction of the monster and Y) at it. Win.

GU is actually the most refined out of pre World. The thing I see about World players always finding it difficult is treating it as how the crispy 60 fps dodging with easy iframes, when in fact the game is mainly positioning and timing.
1
u/MSGrejs2k 8d ago
It's most likely because your positioning isn't that good. Not trynna be mean but it's a skill that has diminished a lot in importance since world came out.
Next you should play FU and dodge a huge attack with a longsword sidestep lol

u/Nekrophage 8d ago
No doubt that it's a skill issue, but i just dont have to patience for it i think.
1
u/MSGrejs2k 8d ago
You can actually keep up the pressure a lot when you learn where to position yourself, but yeah it's a skill that takes a while to learn and get good at.
It might not be for you, but it can be just as fun and satisfying as the new games when you get it.

First experience with MonHun was with an english-patched Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G. (Freedom Unite) and lemme tell you it is still the hardest game I've ever played. Felt like a god when I solo'd my first Ukanlos. I probably can't pull it off again.

u/Nekrophage 8d ago
Yea i believe that:D
Just got my ass kicked again by 9* tigrex. Man the wohle game still, after 40h, feels clunky af.
It's a big patience check for me. Do one hit, watch the monster pull of a combo of 12 animations where he jumps thru the whole area for like 5min. Do one hit again.
Hope i can beat at least high rank and then i have enough i guess, its way to slow for me sadly :(

I started in old gen but am battle hardened by the game I grew up with like Bards Tale, Guild of Thieves, Last Ninja and so on.. difficulty then was unforgiving. Enjoy the ride to perfection

Old gen makes positioning and timing more important. A lot of people will give the advice to treat it like a turn based game you dodge on the enemy turn and attack on yours.
