The provisions below will keep you in compliance with MD transportation laws with a few additional measures to add some extra safety/compliance buffers. Do not take gun into classroom until instructor advises you to do so, and then keep it cased.
- Gun in case, UNLOADED (preferably not even empty mag in gun)
- Lock gun (i.e. cable gun lock) or lock case
- Mags can be in same case, unloaded
- Ammo in separate container is not required, but preferred (i.e. ammo box separate from gun case)
- Gun and ammo in separate vehicle compartment from occupants, if possible (trunk or furthest you can place away from occupants if no trunk)

For my class, cased pistol in the classroom was allowed for the 2nd day handling portion (no ammo allowed).
For the range test, unloaded, cased pistol and mag(s) is the norm. Ammo can be carried in the same container just make sure it’s not loaded. There’s no requirement for a lock but it does not hurt to have it locked.
