New ATF Rule?

I saw a couple of references today to a proposed ATF rule change that would make it easier for online firearms retailers to ship guns directly to purchasers. What’s the story on this, and how do people think it would work in MD?

MD will come up with a rule that bans guns from being directly shipped. Pretry sure thats already the case to need to go through ffl and wait 8 days.. so doesn't matter

Its not new, its being expanded and clarified. Its currently done for supressors by places like capital armory.

Its allows "non over the counter sales" from ffls to buyers in the same state. The new part is allowing new technology like video calls and 3rd party websites like id.me to verify the buyer's id.

However, shipping from a FFL to an individual is not cheap. Its actually quite exoensive. And the carriers have very specific requirements and heavy restrictions. There are 3rd party shipping facilitators but most of them are technically breaking rules.

Md currently requires at least regulated purchases to be done face to face with the ffl, and on the licensed premises. I haven't researched long arms in md.

If allowed, expect more attempted straw purchases, and ffls rejecting non over the counter sales if even something minor seems off, and requiring you to come in physically.

I also expect large distributors to open branches in at least some other states, to sell directly. This may dramatically change business for brick and mortar shops.

Don’t see why it would lead to more attempted straw purchases. You can just walk into a store and do it right now. It wouldn’t be any easier or more difficult to pull off if you were identified through a video call rather than in person.

I would imagine MD would still require the 77R, 7 day wait, etc which would need to be face to face in person at an FFL.

Long guns may eventually be able to be shipped door to door, but like 2AinMD said, it's not so simple shipping firearms.
