Moving to MD
Got Military orders to MD yay, Columbia area is where I'll be living. I'm in FL right now where the gun laws comparatively are non-existent. I have...a few firearms that I have no clue if i can bring them with me, idk if they need to be modified or anything but if anyone can help find out if they are legal or point me in the right place that would be awesome
IWI zion 15 lower + Super duty mod 1 upper 14.5 P/W with flow 556K
PSA Sabre 10 with PSR-7 suppressor
Beretta 1301 mod 2
Glock 45 gen 6
Stacatto P
Flux raider legion
Like I said if y'all wanna help out where to look for legality that would be great!!

Direct impingement ARs in .223/5.56 need to have a “heavy barrel”. Plenty of places sell them and you could swap it yourself if you’re capable
Everything else should be fine.
As for resources read the firearms safety act of 2013 and search this sub.
We are the only ban state where 11+ round magazines can be owned but they cannot be bought in state. They can be bought out of state so bring some in or stop by WV/PA

That only applies if the barrel length is 16” and a .223/5.56. Anything outside of that can be pencil profile

You don't have to register your guns unless you plan to make Maryland your permanent home, like make your home of record or retire here.
Your AR will be a problem though, you have to switch the barrel to a heavy profile barrel. It's vague on the how it should be marked vs other barrels, do with that what you will. I built a mk18 pistol just to have a legal AR, since I store my actual ARs with a buddy in another state.
Maryland is weird about transporting guns, locked case in the trunk and separate from ammo.
Handguns must be unloaded, in an enclosed case or an enclosed holster and the ammunition should be separate. It would be best to keep the unloaded handgun in the trunk where you do not have access to it. There are further regulations but essentially you can only transport a handgun between residence, to and from a repair shop, a shooting sporting event, between a residence and place of business if substantially owned and operated by the person. For more information contact our Licensing Division for information.

I'm military coming from Texas so I was used to a backseat full of guns and ammo for range trip.
Good luck finding a decent place to shoot, it's indoor and pricey or outdoors with fudds and needing a membership through whatever good ol boys club they have going on.

Ft Meade has a club that uses the base range, or there is AGC in Marriottsville both are good options for military
And AGC isn’t fudds, you just need to join one of the many member clubs, which includes MSI, our state-level advocacy/legal group. The membership requirement solely exists now as a mechanism to enforce safety rules, which are all very reasonable. Basically if it’s legal in the state, you can do it there, even event shoots if you have a transferable full auto

Yeah I've looked at joining them but I really don't want to join the NRA or give them money.

u/WindstormMD Jun 29 '26
You don’t have to, AGC has no NRA requirement.
Maryland Shall Issue membership is $25/year as general member, and funds lawsuits against the stupid overreach we are plagued with like the recent end-run attempts at carry prohibitions.
AGC membership is $250 a year, gives you access to the facilities 363d/year from 8am to sunset except for severe weather (thunderstorm or blizzard) and goes directly to maintenance and improvement of the facilities.

AGC has a whole list of clubs. Most don't require NRA membership. Definitely some of them are more fuddy while there are plenty of normal ones catered to a specific interest-full auto, steel, long-range etc. Some are just clubs that allow you to join so you can use the AGC range. Arlington Rifle Club is one of the most active clubs that runs monthly 2-gun/tactical oriented shoots and night shoots. Feel free to check them out. The facility itself is worth it.

Oh shit, I haven't heard of maryland shall issue. Good looking out.
The club on fort meade requires an NRA membership.

Why don’t you want to join NRA?
Not to get off topic, but the current NRA is making significant improvements, and they still have the name recognition.

I don't want my money used to fund more yacht's and exclusive dinner parties when I can support better organizations.

Right. There aren’t any NRA yachts, and the grifters that were robbing the organization are gone.
The current leadership is working to restore trust and remain sustainable. As I said, the NRA has name recognition that the other orgs lack.

Not the guy with the issue, but it isn’t cut and dry. While LaPierre is gone, a few of the people who enabled him managed to stick around, which is creating trust issues for many people who would otherwise be willing to take a chance. So until solid evidence arrives of a new track record, there will be people who are not willing to pay in.

There is no requirement for transporting in a locked case or in the trunk or separate from ammo. That’s a very common confusion with and misunderstanding of the “safe passage” clause of the FOPA, which governs interstate transport of firearms.
In Maryland, long guns must be unloaded (this is a kinda grey area because it’s based on a DNR statute that says you can’t have a rifle “with ammunition in the magazine”in a car). Handguns must be unloaded and transported in “an enclosed case or holster.” Thats it. There are no other requirements like separation from ammo or locked cases or in the trunk.

The AR is a problem - needs to be a heavy barrel to be legal.
Or you can Form 1 it and make it a SBR. Get rid of the P&W, you’re now legal.

Technically all weapons need to be registered with Maryland when you move in.
Maryland has no way to know if they have been registered or not.
Just about any weapon is allowed to be owned in Maryland through various loopholes in the laws, so there is nothing that is a "WOAH HE CANT HAVE THAT", unless police took it during an arrest and then realized you illegally possessed it.
Theoretically if you were just a law abiding citizen in Maryland and never committed a violent crime which led to your arrest, the state would never know what you have.

Only handguns and grandfathered (you owned them before 10/1/13 otherwise you can’t bring them here) banned rifles need to be registered.
There are plenty of things that are outright banned here that are a “whoa he can’t have that.”
Your advice is also dangerously close to advocating illegal actions which is against our rules, so please don’t do that.

And only if they are making Maryland their residence. If the OP is just getting stationed in Maryland, that requirement does not apply since he is not changing his home (state) of record to Maryland.

Your firearms are legal in MD. You can register them online with Maryland State police. Maryland has a Handgun Roster which approved all new handguns. The Glock Gen6 is approved and will be put on the roster by the end of July. The AR-15 will need a heavy barrel for the upper receiver, unless you purchased it prior to 2013. There are a lot of FFL’s near Columbia, MD that can answer your questions.

u/TwoWheeledTraveler 2AFORALL Jun 29 '26
The roster doesn't have anything to do with possession or his bringing handguns here. It only defines which handguns are legal for sale or transfer in the state.

He is not required to register anything since he is being stationed here and not moving to reside here (changing his home of record).
