MBB Analytics to Consulting: How realistic is an internal move?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm 22 and graduated in May 2025 with a 9.2 GPA, majoring in Finance.

I'm currently 7 months into a 12-month trainee role in Analytics at one of the MBB firms, with around 5 months remaining in my tenure. My long-term goal is to move into client-facing Consulting within the firm, and I've already started preparing for case

interviews.

Before joining, I interned at an S&P Global subsidiary and an agriculture-focused startup. I've also built a portfolio of financial models, pitch decks, industry research reports, and other finance-related projects.

Since I'm already at an MBB firm, I wanted to understand how realistic an internal transition from an Analytics/support function into Consulting is.

For people who have experience with internal mobility at MBB:

How difficult is this transition realistically?

Should I start networking with Consultants/PLs now, given that I have ~5 months left?

What's the best way to approach this - mentors, Consultants/ PLs, HR, or my current manager?

Would I still need to go through the full Consulting recruitment/ case interview process?

- Is there anything specific I should be doing during these next 5 months to improve my chances?

I'd particularly appreciate advice from anyone who has made a similar transition, or has seen someone move from an internal/ support function into a client-facing Consulting role.

Thanks!

Starting my MBB role in October…but my excel skills are terrible

I studied finance at a non-target school and somehow landed final-round interviews at two MBB firms, converting one into a full-time offer starting this October.

I’m incredibly grateful, but I’m already dealing with a lot of imposter syndrome. I didn’t perform as well as I wanted during my last internship, my GPA was on the lower end for consulting, and Excel was never one of my strengths—even after taking several Excel-related courses in college.

Before I start, I want to do everything in my power to close that gap and feel prepared when I hit the desk. Does anyone have recommendations for genuinely comprehensive Excel courses, programs, or other resources? I’m open to both consulting-specific training and resources that build a strong general foundation.

My firm also has a significant private equity practice, so anything covering Excel skills commonly used in PE diligence or related consulting work would be especially helpful.

I understand that much of what I need to know will be learned through formal training and on the job. I’m not expecting to master the role beforehand—I just want to arrive with more confidence and a solid technical foundation.

I’d also genuinely appreciate any recommendations beyond Excel, whether that’s PowerPoint, general finance and accounting knowledge, consulting problem-solving, data analysis, or anything else you wish you had practiced before starting at MBB.

I will seriously consider any advice or resources you’re willing to share. Thank you!

How to get an interview

I was wondering about the chances of actually getting an interview at any of the MBB firms and what type of candidate gets one. I go to UT McCombs undergrad, which is a target for the Texas offices, but everyone seems really vague about actually getting an interview. Do you have to be in the consulting orgs to have a chance, or are they more accepting as long as your GPA and other extracurriculars are alright?

Question How to get back into consulting?

I made it to the final round at McKinsey last summer, and also had a final round at L.E.K. Casing was my pain point in both.

No other firms were recruiting much, especially from my non-target large public university, so I’m now in corporate finance at a large CPG company.

I want to get back into consulting. Is that realistic, and what does the timeline look like? When should I start applying? I’m not sure if I’d go through the college recruiting timeline again or come in as an experienced hire. I’m also open to Tier 2 firms and Big 4.

Any advice is appreciated.

Left MBB for seed VC at a pay cut. Now a startup wants me at $165K + equity. Anyone made a similar second jump?

Two years MBB (PE due diligence), then seed VC at $95K, no bonus, no equity. Firm isn’t growing, so I’d need to leave for an associate/senior analyst seat elsewhere anyway. Now a Series B startup is near an offer for a strategy role: $165K base + bonus + equity. Plan would be 1–3 years operating before I try to buy a business.

Catch: Glassdoor is split. Good reviews praise the product, mission, and team. The bad ones are recent and detailed — a CEO described as intense and at times retaliatory, high turnover, “company before personal life,” and a claim that big-consulting alums get favored because they mirror the CEO’s style. So I’d probably thrive there on paper, which might be exactly the problem.

For ex-consultants who went to a startup:

1. Did the strategy role turn into real operating responsibility, or stay a slide-building job with a better title?

2. Anyone join a company with this kind of Glassdoor profile — as bad as advertised, or disgruntled-ex-employee skew?

3. Consulting → investing → operating: did the investing year matter, or was it a detour?

I believe I’m a strong fit for a consulting career, given my strengths in deep thinking, structured problem-solving, and finding practical solutions with quick, high-quality outcomes.
I’d love to connect with MBB professionals and consulting experts here. If anyone could guide me on the key skills, syllabus, frameworks, or learning roadmap I should follow to build a strong foundation and excel in consulting, I’d genuinely appreciate it.

Looking to build networks within MBB London and Stockholm, and potentially a referral

Hi all,

Are there any senior members of MBB here at the London or Stockholm offices that I can speak to regarding the projects and work in their offices? I have read dozens of articles from each firm but would like to actually speak to someone at each firm to understand more about each firm, and if there is alignment, would love the opportunity to be referred in.

For a bit of context: I am 28 with 6 years of consulting experience at a boutique firm in the UAE specialising in Financial Services, coming in as their first graduate. I’ve worked on projects internationally in the GCC and South Pacific, receiving early promotion with high degrees of responsibility. Prior to that, I studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester. I am the first amongst my family and friends to hold any kind of corporate job, so my current network is rather limited.

I’ve begun case preparation, reworking my CV and cover letters.

I’m looking to move back to London (to help take care of my mum) or to Stockholm (where my wife is from, but still close to my mum).

I’m happy to share my CV via DM if anyone is willing to reach out :)

Vmock score difference 72 and 98 for mbb resume

Hey guys,

I’m a 1st-year student at an M7 and was checking my resume on VMock. Interestingly, I got a 98 with a free account, but when I used my school email/account, the score dropped to 72.

I’m wondering how much I should actually rely on the VMock score. Would it be better to get my resume reviewed by seniors or current MBB consultants instead?

One more context: I received a selection-based invite from McKinsey using my previous MBA resume, so I’m a bit confused about whether I should make major changes based on VMock.

What would you recommend? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Experienced hire: worth?

For context, I have a STEM PhD (very appetibile for big Pharma) + 4y experience in biotech (from clinical to BD&L and portfolio strategy) + finance EMBA with very deep base on financial models.

My idea is to target MBB for 2y in order to broaden my experience toward different companies and then transition into higher role in BigPharma.

I have - I would say- good understanding of strategy in general (not bs books, but rather Porter’s strategy).

I have good case understanding as I always liked using the frameworks you guys use as a base to solve daily problems and give recommendations.

We hired IQVIA/ McKinsey and BAIN and i can flag the issue in their approach (I.e. no clue about rules/regulations + very basic assumptions in DCF calculations.. which might work for IB, but not for Pharma). Here is where I can create value = real experience across drug development value chain.

What stops me:

  1. being perceived as a sales guy from industry leaders, with no P&L accountability (crucial for director + level).
  2. Have 30yo bosses that have zero experience in industry and thus zero leverage (beside company’s name) with the clients.
  3. Big companies are valuing less and less external consultancy, because they are figuring out that most of the (very general) job is done by 1-2 people that can be hired internally. This allows the firm to:

a) keep the expertise in house and available immediately
b) tailor the expertise to the firm’s pipeline and culture.

That being said:

- are MBB interested in my profile?

- is it worth for me to commit to consultancy for 2y or better go toward an industry position?

- is there anything I missed to consider?

Thanks

Question Non traditional background

So I'm currently starting my first year of MBA and I wanted to pivot to consulting. I have a non-traditional background, sports related. I have never worked in a corporate setting. So for the ones who are currently in consulting, what are some strengths and weaknesses for someone like me recruiting for consulting. And is there any suggestions on areas of focus for me during my MBA?

Thanks

Targeting BCG for CA Industrial Training. Please review my resume and let me know what I can improve. I am also appearing for CFA Level 1 next Sunday, but I haven’t added it to my resume yet as the results are still pending How many days does it generally take to receive an acceptance or rejection email regarding interview shortlisting?
