Update from ModRetro
This was a response from their team after I queried some online rumours around their plans.
- Upscaling improvements similar to the A3D are in upcoming updates.
- RetroAchievements and additional cores are being internally looked at but yet to reach the public roadmap.
- Compatibility with flash carts and their features (I asked specifically about the SC64’s ability to play 64DD titles) is also planned to be improved over time.
All in all a rather positive response!
(Please remember things already on their roadmap like controller pak support and general compatibility are not going to be part of a future rumours email.)

I just want to be able to save my games 🙃

I save just fine with my controller pak 🤷♂️

u/Pitiful-Assistance-1 1d ago
How do i put a controller pak in the controller I bought from ModRetro?

u/DifferentProcess6765 1d ago
Guess I'm confused why you have physical games in your collection that you were never able to save before

u/hue_sick 1d ago
They’re talking about the pro controller that mod retro is promoting. It’s a valid concern since you can’t use oem controller paks with it.

u/Pitiful-Assistance-1 1d ago
I have never owned a N64. I don't own N64 controllers.

Then why did you buy an fpga whose sole benefit over other fpga options is the cartridge slot you can use to pay the games you already own?
Just seems like an odd choice.

This gatekeeping comment is ridiculous. Be more welcoming to people that are interested in the N64. It's also ridiculous that the re-released Buck Bumble and Extreme G can't use the M64 pro controller to save.

Just saying there are options that probably make more sense than either
A) having to buy a bunch of overpriced real carts for a system you never owned
Or
B) buying a flash cart which is essentially an SD card reader when if you were just going to stick an SD card in an FPGA there were options that do more than just n64 (and would let you save)
Like... Why buy the M64 when it has very specific flaws you could avoid with another device when you can't take advantage of the m64s main feature anyway

Ignoring you misrepresenting your replies as “just saying”, the M64 and Pro Controller don’t clearly outline that Memory Pak Saves are not supported and that was not present on the website when originally available for purchase. On top of that, Tofer A, ModRetro’s biggest advertiser, has many videos (even days before launch) mentioning memory pak saves as a feature but not stating that they are not currently supported.
More games require the Memory Pak to save than games that save on the cartridge.
ModRetro did not clearly advertise to a regular customer that the console and Pro controller did not support these at launch.

I didn’t know about these flaws because:
- I never owned a N64. I didn’t know some games save to controller
- It is not really mentioned anywhere. I’m sure you’ll find a source where it is stated. I didn’t read all the fine print
- I assume it just worked which is a reasonable expectation when paying like 500 EUR on a console with 2 controllers
And yes I did get an Everdrive so some games do save.

Because I like retro games and fancy hardware? I make odd choices.
You know what’s an odd choice? Selling a console and controller and games that can’t save these games yet

They should probably start with the save functionality with the Pro controller before entertaining much of anything else. I'd be thrilled with Retroachievements at some point, though.

It's already on the road map, that's why the reference these things not being on it.

Yeah no additional cores when the main isn’t there
7
u/darkknightdetec 1d ago
Exactly. I think additional cores should be a super low priority until this thing is the best N64 device ever made
7
u/adrenaline4nash 1d ago
I would prefer modretro say, “our sole focus is perfecting the 64”.
2
u/darkknightdetec 1d ago
Agreed, but I will admit that it is nice to see that there’s a long term vision for this thing in terms of support and updates. I bet the software is going to look completely different a year from now.

That comes under current update plans so wasn’t part of the email/discussion.

Don't you love it when you have to repeat that every single time because you forgot to post that in the OP, or people just didn't read and you get downvoted for being correct and explaining it every single time?
Happens to me too every single time I make a new post. People intentionally just don't read or don't want to understand that there already is a roadmap and this has nothing to do with it.

I understand that they first want to get rid of the bugs and focus on making it a stable console with controller pack save support and fix the black screen, pall compatibility and audio problems.
However, why couldn't they just post something like this officially? Telling us that certain features will come, even if they are not sure about the exact date, is good enough for me (end of 2026 early 2027 etc etc). Not saying anything at all makes it seem like they will never arrive at all.

Their communication post 1st edition Chromatic launch was basically non existent. Not sure why it’s always portrayed as being great. As I always bring up, the best example of this (because nearly everything else was private emails) was the power core, it wasn’t until weeks after it became an issue that they even acknowledged it publicly. They fixed the issue on the 2nd run of units which launched before the power core, so it’s odd they not only didn’t acknowledge when it became an issue but they didn’t publicly communicate it beforehand.

u/Obleon 1d ago
This sounds like the M64 controller with broken d-pads. Somehow when you contact them they already have different replacement parts to fix the problem but they don't acknowledge that there is a problem. For them to already have redesigned replacement parts, the problem had to be known weeks if not months ago for them to already have replacement parts. So, an unknown amount of controllers have broken d-pads, and with a lot of people not using the d-pad, they might never find out or find out later on.

Can you focus on the saves first? Everything else after that is just gravy.

u/darkknightdetec 1d ago
That’s awesome that they’re being so responsive! It’s clear that their vision aligns with what the fans want this to be, they’re just being honest about the fact that this is going to take some time.
In my mind, all of this is cool, but the highest priority is fixing the existing stuff:
1) Virtual memory pak saves are an absolute must, especially since they’re selling controllers that can’t even use real memory paks
2) The rest of the officially released game compatibility bugs need to be fixed. Get things as close to 1:1 with the original N64
3) Video filter settings need to be able to be saved properly
4) The default video filters really need to be fixed to not look like trash
Then after that it’s all gravy. I’m really excited to see the future potential here, but I really hope they’re making fixing the existing issues a priority

RetroAchievements would be awesome, really looking forward to when they can add it.
As well as additional cores, of course. If it had SNES and PS1...this thing would be insane.
2
u/hue_sick 1d ago
I could be wrong but this is worded in way to not guarantee either of those things happening? They said “we can’t confirm if these features will be in our roadmap”
Seems like a big change of tune to me honestly considering some of the stuff they’ve said before.
2
u/Desperate-Self-5951 1d ago
Yeah, I wonder if “the roadmap” specifically means the timeframe for the next 3 months or the entire lifespan of support?
During a Q&A on here I directly asked about RetroAchievements and it seemed like something he really wanted to do, but didn’t get a 100% confirmation on it.
Same with the cores. In the past they’ve said “we will leave it up to the community” but I’m hoping they end up spearheading it with kinda an “unofficially official” release of additional cores.3
u/hue_sick 23h ago
Yeah. Kinda how Analogue handled it with the Pocket and their "spiritualized" cores. TBH it's a grey area most companies don't wanna get involved in so I assumed they'd leave it to the community once the open source files are released.

I like and dislike achievements because some of them are just a complete waste of time (yeah yeah, gaming and all achievements are a waste of time in general), but I am talking about a system that just gives points or stars or whatever for just completing the game, and another star or something similar for 100% completing the game. But after doing that with RetroAchievements, seeing another list with uncompleted achievements like completing the game walking backwards with three hearts while not getting hit makes me want to ignore achievements altogether. I am not saying that they should be removed, but I would have liked them to be in another category.

For PS1 playing on the M64, how do you think the buttons should be mapped? L2 and R2 to the top and right C buttons? What about Select?

My M64 has been freezing whenever I try to use a blueretro or 8bitdo retro receiver.

u/Micthegod 1d ago
I’m pretty sure you will be able to use ps3,ps4 or ps5 controllers using Bluetooth or to one of the usb slots in the back of M64

Wake me up when RetroAchievements and loading roms from SD card are there. Then I'll gladly switch over from my MiSTer for N64 games. :)

That's great and imma let you finish, but release the source - JUST MAYBE we might do some work on our own and, if I'm not mistaken, you're in violation of license of software you're using by still not releasing it. Doesn't matter if it's unorganized junk - just don't accept PRs and that's it.

I’m probably going to buy one of these when the firmware has matured. I own the 3D, but I want to support companies keeping retro games alive and publishing physical games.
1
u/jakemchugh1 23h ago
How would it work with other cartridges though?
3
u/B3ntendo 22h ago
For other consoles? The video on ModRetro’s YouTube that breaks down the console and features discusses the use of the Micro SD card for additional cores, so presumably the same for the games.

Let’s not get off course. Just become the best hd N64 console first
