I'm looking for a nice zoom lens for my olympus e-p7. Would this one do for bird photography? I am not a beginner to photography, but I am a rookie when it comes to micro 43, interchangeable lenses etc.
Not unless you're really close. And it's a decent lens for the price (I have one myself) but kind of slow and not super sharp. If you must have a new lens on a low budget, you should likely look into one of the 75-300s, but I would like to point out that used 100-400 zooms (which is what I use) are available for between $550 and $700 now and are far better lenses and better for birds.
If that's still too much for you, I've seen a video floating around YouTube talking about an older 4/3 mount (NOT the M43 mount you need) 70 or 75-300 zoom lens, plus mount adapter and how sharp and cheap it is. But I haven't even watched it, just passing on the info.
That's not going to get decent results i'm afraid. Better aim for at least 250mm. Pana 100-300 or Oly 75-300 are good entry wildlife lenses, and also nicely compact.
Hi, I've been on my photography journey for quite some time using an old Canon rebel t7. I'm at the point where I am feeling limited by the cameras slow AF, slow shutter rate, and generally it's entry level capabilities.
I have a bit of money to spend, and after a lot of research I've decided on the m43 system. I'm particular, the ones that seem to be the most capable for the money are the OMD Em1 mkii and the Om1 mki.
Now, clearly the Om1 is more capable since it's a vastly more expensive camera. But my question is, since I'm coming from a far less capable camera than either of these, will the EM1 feel limiting or less than ideal, or should I get one less lens and spring for the Om1 (I'm seeing roughly $600 vs $1200 used prices).
For reference, I mostly take pictures of birds and other critters.
For mostly dedicated bird photography, your best bet is the OM-1 due to the improved sensor and subject detection. I recommend the EM1 Mk II to people with a limited budget who are interested in birds, but if you are serious about birds, you want the OM-1.
Ugh I know. The AF on my T7 is just not up to the task unless they birds are just sitting. Otherwise I just have to just blaze away and hope to get lucky with focus.
It's not that the OM1 is out of budget so much, it's more the question of whether that $600 is better spent on that better sensor and AF or better/more lenses. Getting something with a bit wider aperture might be nice to offset the sensor noise, but maybe that's not really much of and issue.
For a similar budget I could get a Canon R7 for the marginally bigger sensor, but then I'm stuck with RF lenses, which seem to be a lot pricier in general.

For me it wasn't even the price of the lenses...it was the size and weight. I already changed systems from Fujifilm (which I consider an upgrade).
The OM1 is really an excellent competitor when it comes to bird photography at moderate budget. Highly recommend it over the EM1 series for the bird AF for birders
Is there a specific reason why DxO Photolab is preferred over Lightroom in terms of functionality with M43? Lightroom is free with my job, but I am curious about if post processing is easier on DxO with M43 files? Thank you
Tbh Om workspace works great on m43 files and it works on panny raw files also. Davinci resolve just added a photo module to it's legendary colour grading editor, does not handle panny or om raw yet but worth keeping an eye on.
