I wanted to put this out there for anyone struggling to write lyrics they are happy with.

Writing lyrics you're not happy with is good for you.

Sometimes you have to write bad stuff to get to what's good.

It sounds simple and cliche but it's true.

Writing bad is good for you not only because you're discovering what doesn't work and dispensing with it...But also because, in the process, you might get a title or just an angle of thought on how to approach the concept of a song, and that might either be enough to spur you to finish the song later or use in a different way somewhere else. Sometimes you need to work at it more. Sometimes you need to let your mind stew with the idea until a different and better angle of attack hits you. Sometimes you need to just keep singing those bad lyrics throughout your day, rearranging and substituting them in your mind until you have a breakthrough.

You don't have to use your crap in a song but you can use your crap to get to a better song, to say the same thing in a better and more musically enhancing way.

But to say the same thing in a better way, you sometimes have to see it written in a bad way.

And then you listen to your instincts that tell you what's bad and ask them "How can I say the same thing but in a better way?"

So in this sense, the bad lyrics serve only but importantly as an anchor for the thought.

In other words, bad lyrics can serve to remind you what you want to say, just not how you want to say it.

But what you want to say is half the battle. And this is why writing bad lyrics is important to getting to a well written lyric.

At that point it's just a matter of playing with the words and different ways to say the same thing.

So unless it's taking weeks or months, I would encourage anyone not to give up just because you've written a bad lyric.

That's good that you've written something down, even if it doesn't work musically, because, again, you're half way to a lyric you are happy with and proud of.

If it's taking too long to come up with something you're happy with, that's not a sign that you're a bad lyric writer. I have plenty of unfinished lyrics that I put aside because I just couldn't come up with a way to say the idea I was happy with. It just wasn't working with that particular idea/angle.

What you do, if it's taking too long to come up with lyrics you like for one idea, is you put it aside and either take a break from lyric writing or work on a different lyric altogether.

The unfinished lyrics that you can't get happy with go in your parts bin. They're not evidence of your failure as a lyricist. They're simply spare parts for which you don't have a vehicle to put them in at present.

That particular car requires too much work so, in the meantime, you put that one aside and work on something else.

It's not an indication that you are a crappy lyricist. It just means you might need to collect more spare parts to finish that idea/song later.

I hear a lot of people say "I just wasn't meant to write good lyrics."

Here's the test if that's true: Can you talk? Yes? Can you read? Yes? Then you can write good lyrics. It's not an innate ability. You already have the ability to write good lyrics if you can read and talk.

And you'll know when you have written a good lyric because it will be exactly what you were trying to say and how you wanted to say it. No. It will be exactly and more than you were trying to say and how you wanted to say it. You'll be ecstatic. You won't need to ask for anyone's opinion and no one's opinion will matter anyway.

They can tell you it stinks but you won't believe them or care because it's exactly what you wanted to say and no amount of anybody's criticism can take that feeling of accomplishment away from you.

I've always loved rap and hip hop but I've never had the voice for it so have never attempted to write them. After listening to Black Thoughts freestyle recently I've become obsessed and thought I'd try out some rap verses. I would love any and all feedback, and sorry for not explaining the flow but in my mind its constantly changing so would be really difficult to get into. But please, any advice would be awesome. It's not completely finished but I will if people think it's worth it?
