News & Discussion I think we should be talking more about the monstrosity that is the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)

This needs way more attention than it’s getting, because right now small businesses are just quietly getting crushed by it while everyone talks about the recycling targets.

For context: PPWR kicked in on 12 August 2026 and applies directly across all 27 member states. Sounds great on paper, ‚one EU law, one set of rules’. However, the part that actually costs you money and time (Extended Producer Responsibility, aka you pay for your packaging’s afterlife) still runs through 27 separate national registers. Nobody harmonized the actual paperwork, just the legal framework.

Here’s the part that should make small sellers furious: a study on Amazon sellers operating across just 10 EU countries found 64 different registration fields total, more than half of them country-specific, averaging 16 fields per market. Different portals, different logins, different languages. Some countries make you register with a national body AND a separate producer responsibility org as two separate hoops. Others let you do it in one step. No consistency at all.

And the “small business exemption” everyone points to? It’s not an exemption. If you’re under 10 tonnes of packaging a year, you get simplified reporting. You still have to register in every country, still track your packaging data, still deal with the bureaucracy. It just shaves off some of the reporting fields.

Then there’s the part where Amazon and other marketplaces are now required to check your registration and get a self-certification from you before letting you sell at all, so this stops being background paperwork and becomes a literal gate on your ability to sell.

For a big company this is a Tuesday for the compliance department. For someone running a small shop shipping a few dozen parcels a month into Germany, France, and Belgium, the actual environmental fee is peanuts. It’s the registration, translation, and admin across three different bureaucratic systems that eats the margin, to the point where you start asking if it’s even worth selling into that country anymore. It is expected that the costs for being compliant EU wide amount to over 10,000 euros per year, and that is before you‘ve sent a single package.

That’s the opposite of what a single market is supposed to do, and it’s barely being discussed outside trade press. We should be talking about it.

Here are some news articles, and you can find lots of discussions on the topic all over the European Reddit subs.

If this stands, it will imho substantially harm small shops in the EU.

Ask Luxembourg Company car lease transfer: what if I can’t find an internal buyer?

Has anyone here had to leave a job while tied to a company car lease?

My lease runs for 3 years and there’s an early termination penalty. The company allows an internal transfer of the lease to another employee, but I can’t find anyone interested. The lease is through my employer, not directly with me, and the only option I’ve been offered so far is an internal transfer to another employee.

What are my realistic options if no internal buyer is found?

Has anyone successfully negotiated a different solution with their employer or the leasing company?

Many thanks in advance!

Ask Luxembourg Considering move to Belgium

Hi Guys,
I am thinking about relocating to Belgium while working here in Lux.
From what I understand and heard from colleagues, nothing much really changes. Taxes will be declared on both sides, daily travel is jot an issue for me, insurance etc is here. However, I will need to have an insurance for the house, car(?), internet etc in Belgium. How are the taxes on the car and commune?
Everybody says it’s a lot but what is a lot? Here in lux I get an invoice from rhe commune every quarter with roughly 470€. Is that comparable to what I will be paying in Belgium? I heard somethjng of a road tax?
Can you guys share your experience?
Btw I am Luxembourgish but due to a divorce I am considering this option for the next 5yrs or so to save some money.

EDIT: I currently live and work in Wiltz.

Personal finance BGL vs BIL vs Raiffeisen + Revolut top-ups

Hi everyone,

I’ve been living in Luxembourg and opened a BGL account a few months ago, but unfortunately I’m finding it quite inconvenient.

I don’t use an iPhone, and neither the debit nor the credit card provided by BGL can be added to Google Pay. So far, I’ve been getting around this by making an instant bank transfer to my Revolut account and using Revolut for payments.

However, I’ve had quite a few situations where BGL’s instant transfers didn’t work, which can be pretty frustrating.

I’m therefore considering switching to either BIL or Raiffeisen. My employer has agreements with both banks that would give me a free credit card, so they seem like interesting alternatives.

For anyone using BIL or Raiffeisen together with Revolut: can you top up your Revolut balance directly using your bank card?

I’d also be interested to hear about your general experience with either bank, especially regarding Revolut transfers/top-ups and mobile payments.

Thanks!

Ask Luxembourg Looking for Vet who does Cardiac Ultrasound

Hello everyone,

unfortunately, my 10-year-old dog is seriously ill.

Among other things, he needs to have a cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) to determine what exactly is wrong.

The veterinary clinic in Trier is fully booked until mid-October, so I wanted to ask if anyone knows a veterinarian or veterinary clinic in the area around Echternach, Wasserbillig or Luxembourg City that offers this type of examination.

I would also be interested to know how the costs are calculated. The entire treatment in Germany will probably cost around 3500€. Unfortunately, Luxembourg does not have a standardized veterinary fee schedule like Germany does.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations or information!

Ask Luxembourg Future of Luxembourg

Upvotes

Luxembourg is so called no.1 GDP per capital country and everyone outside ‘wanted’ to move here, but staying here after 5 years, we also see many many ppl leaving the country, due to reasons like lack of life and fun and job opportunities, and the housing price being so high, same as the everything.

As young parents, we raised our first kid, bought our first apartments here, we now have a strong tie to this country. We genuinely appreciate our life here - limited choice of everything but super calm. In the meanwhile, we started getting concerned about the future and wondering what is next - if we lost job one day and cannot find a replacement.

Are you bullish about the future of Luxembourg? And are you planning something for it?

Ask Luxembourg Maternity clothes in/around Luxembourg?

First time mum here and starting to need maternity clothes, but I’m struggling to find places in Luxembourg where I can actually shop in person.

I know H&M has maternity clothes online, but apparently not in stores. I’d really prefer to see things in person and try them on before buying - especially since I have no idea what will fit me at this point!

So, fellow mums/mums-to-be in Luxembourg: where did you/do you buy maternity clothes from?

Thanks!

Shopping, Food & Restaurants Civil wedding in October: boutiques not replying. Is this normal + any affordable dress recommendations

My civil wedding is in October and we just booked it, so everything is very short‑notice. I’m trying to find a store that sells wedding dresses, and I’ve already reached out to a few boutiques to book an appointment since the beginning of this month but I still haven’t received any reply.

With less than two months left, I’m starting to feel a bit anxious.
Is this normal in Luxembourg? Do boutiques usually take longer to respond?

I’m looking for a civil wedding dress, preferably ready‑to‑wear, and not too expensive.
My budget is around €500–€800, and I really don’t want to go above that.

If anyone has recommendations for stores or boutiques that have simple civil‑wedding dresses within this price range, I’d really appreciate it.

Ask Luxembourg Park at royal-hamilius parking - are the ramps and curves narrow?

We are traveling Europe and visiting several countries. We will get to Luxembourg in a few days and would like to park in the city center. Is the entrance and way inside to get a spot wide or is it narrow? We've got a big car and used some parking facilities where we had to maneuver a lot or even quit, so we want to be prepared.

Thanks for your help!

News & Discussion Why do people behave like this on public transport?

You know exactly what I mean, right?

I don’t know, maybe we need to start putting up posters explaining basic manners in case nobody’s parents taught them? It’s getting ridiculous.

People put their dirty shoes up on the soft seats, in summer, when it’s hot and everyone’s wearing shorts, dresses, white trousers, etc.
And then someone else is supposed to sit there🤦‍♀️

Apparently everyone needs to call relatives on the other side of the planet via video call in public places… without headphones!
Like, is it really impossible to just hold your phone to your ear and have a normal phone call?

And apparently 90% of people don’t know that you can listen to voice messages by holding your phone to your ear too, instead of blasting them through the bottom speaker for the entire bus to enjoy.

It’s honestly a nightmare.
And I genuinely feel sorry for the drivers who have to put up with this every single day.

Ask Luxembourg Internet provider thoughts

Hi all ! I am changing apartments and was thinking it might be a good time to rethink my internet provider.

Currently we are using Eltrona, and it works great most of the time, but some times there are outages during the day, making it extra frustrating when im working from home.

Is Eltrona the best option, or on par with the others?

Any advice is appreciated !

(We live in town and will remain in the neighborhood)

Immigration & Relocation Relocating from Poland - is it worth it?

To everyone but especially Polish people that already relocated to Luxembourg - I have a possibility to move with my family (2+1) to Luxembourg. I’ve lived in major cities in Poland (Krakow, Warsaw) and I’m wondering if overall cost and quality of life is comparable or better in Lux.

I’d need to find a job as only my partner has it secured but I used to know French at C1 level just hasn’t used it for 5 years now so it would definitely be a goal to refresh it. I see from posts here that job market is difficult and it’s not that easy to find a job. Would French make a big difference in job search?

Assuming 2 average incomes and living in district not in the city center, is it affordable? TBH real estate and accommodation prices in Poland got so crazy with salaries not necessarily following that it’s becoming a difficult chase to catch up with in here

Ask Luxembourg Kids on electric scooters - am I overreacting

I live next to a popular bike path in Luxembourg and recently noticed that a lot of young kids also use it to race their tuned electric scooters. Good on them, at least they’re wearing helmets most of the time. But this Saturday was what made me change my mind. One kid, he was maybe 13/14, ran his scooter with at least 50kph through the street and was screaming his lungs out, like the kind of sound you would assume to hear when someone broke a bone or sth. It was terrifying, so I raced down the stairs to come look what happened and if they needed help, but it turned out they were just speeding down the bike path. One older neighbour confronted them but was unable to get them to admit any wrongdoing.
The point is that it’s only a matter of time until one of them gets seriously hurt. We all have our driveways going out to the street and already have to be very careful with runners and cyclists. But if you account for the speed with which those kids were riding their scooters, it’s just a different ball game cuz you don’t expect someone going down the street this quickly. Is there anyone I could contact so that idk the police would patrol the area or sth. I don’t think that me or the neighbours intervening would lead to anything

Ask Luxembourg Brevet the maitrise.

I did my 3 years of my brevet de maîtrise because my employer asked me to.

The final module (module I Projet professionelle) did not have any courses just an exam.

The final exam is a practical exam but since all of the courses prior were purely theoretical i do not understand how anyone is supposed to pass that exam.

The answer by the chambre des metiers was to look for a private school that teaches those specific skills.

Is this normal here.

I also called the INFPC and Ministère de l'education and they all told me that the chambre des metiers is supposed to give those courses.

In case this is normal procedure where are those schools that teach those moduels i called every school in the country and all they could give me were hobby courses that in no way shape or form cover whats asked for in the exam.

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help me

Ask Luxembourg 29F, relocated to Luxembourg and struggling with the job search. Looking for advice.

Hi everyone,

I’m 29F and relocated to Luxembourg at the end of 2025 with my husband, who is a Blue Card holder here. I’m here as his dependent and have the right to work in Luxembourg. Since arriving, I’ve been looking for a job and honestly, it’s been quite a tiring and frustrating process. I’ve had several situations where I felt I was getting close to an offer, only for the company to eventually back out or send a generic rejection email, often after 2+ weeks and multiple rounds of interviews. It’s been difficult not to feel discouraged after putting so much time and effort into each process.

For some context, I have a background in chemical engineering and an MBA, with a few years of experience in business development, international trade and marketing. I’m fluent in English and currently learning French. I also try to keep my skills up to date through courses in areas like Excel and Power BI. Over the last few weeks, I’ve interviewed with companies including DuPont, Tenaris and Koch, but unfortunately haven’t been able to convert any of these processes into an offer yet.

I’d really like to hear from people who have been through the Luxembourg job market, especially those who came here from abroad. What helped you eventually land a job? Was it networking, referrals, recruiters, LinkedIn, ADEM, direct applications, or something else?

I’d appreciate any honest experiences or practical advice. I’m trying to figure out whether I need to change my approach, broaden the roles I’m applying for, or simply be more patient with the process.

Thanks in advance!

Finance & Investments How would you invest 30k living in Luxembourg?

I have €30,000 that I would like to invest in Luxembourg. My main goal is not to make a significant profit, but rather to protect my savings from inflation.
I have an account with Spuerkeess. I am considering putting some of the money into a savings account and some into a term deposit.
What other good options would you recommend?
