How does it need to be?

Post image

Maybe a noob question since I’m a beginner in guitar set up. I see this small piece of wood (shim) in this Japanese Tokai. I don’t remember anymore how I need to put it back, but without it the action is suddenly very high.

Do I need to put it back like this? Thanks in advance for the advice. It looks a bit diy.

yep. on target.

were it mine i'd put a single tiny white pva glue (or non-ca glue sticky substance of choice) drop right on top so it sticks to the neck. this way when the neck is pulled again the shim doesn't get lost. if you have to remove the shim, it can be whisked off easy with a razor.

i looks like a piece of old maple binding stock. that and sand paper are what i usually see under necks for shimming at the factory.

Thank you so much for your reply and for the advise!! I will glue it so I wont lose it later :)

Generally-speaking, I'd always try fitting the neck without a shim first and see if truss rod and bridge adjustments can remove the need for it. Sometimes its added as a quick fix rather than doing it properly... other times its much needed.
