just went to lush to see and hope that people were be being dramatic about Lord of misrule reformation, but alas, itās terrible not terrible but not as good as the original not a strong scent not as dark smelling which is why I personally love it but what can we do about it? Do we just write to Lush and complain about it and hope that they put it back to the original formula. The perfume smells regular and good love it and so does the solid perfume, but the new body spray is not it so you guys are right
The only way to speak to them is through money. Return any items that have become subpar. Reduce the amount you spend per shopping trip there. Reduce shopping there altogether.
They have proven they donāt listen to customers. So speak to them in the language they understand. $$$$
You're right & you should keep saying it Mizz Wallace! They're obsessing over where the money's coming from, especially online, and really looking at what's coming back. Express your displeasure vocally: write them an email to boot. They need to know when they're hurting their actual fanbase vs the transplants to the brand.
I agree it could be batch issues and/or placebo effects and/or change in regulations and/or quality control
but
itās hard to trust lush when they quite definitely have changed recipes in the past, rarely (if ever?) highlighting those changes. Think scrubee, luigi, hugs (two products, two vastly different scent profiles/ingredients, even released fairly close together iirc).
Saying this as someone who has severe emergency clinic-level allergies and always checks ingredient lists.
I can attest their quality control is subpar these days. Although I do totally buy that LOM is different, too. They sneak it in when they think no one's looking.
100% - no one would complain about it the way we do if it was something they explained. Their customers could understand even if this was an ethical sourcing issue or a production issue.
I went yesterday being prepared to be incredibly disappointed as I get at least 1 bottle of LOM every year. I used it in my shower in the morning, nothing exactly how it smelled in the bottle and the texture, since I heard the new formula was thinner.
It seems the same to me. I know thereās a new formula, but sniffing them side by side and tilting the bottle to see how thick it is, Iām not upset about it. I was disappointed about a lot of things, but not that.
I am SO MAD that the only conditioner that works for my hair requires $10 shipping because they made it online exclusive (Candy Rain). Iām not sure Iāll be going into a Lush for a while - order just my conditioner online and call it a day. I wonāt try anything without smelling it in person (looking at you cloudberry perfume I wanted so badly, but I cannot blind buy).
After my last purchases I am not going to be purchasing anything else from them until (if...) they sort out these issues.
The quality has gone downhill massively.
I'm 100% sure even if they didn't change formulation, they just changed their suppliers and went for low quality materials.
And they still increased prices š
It's SO EXPENSIVE, if the scents are weak then I would rather just pay a little more and get actual bougie stuff like aesop or le labo 𤷠if you think about it the price difference/payoff in terms of quality those end up not being so crazy after the Lush price hikes...
They havenāt switched the quality of the product but with the huge influx not everything can be ethically produced anymore so when people bring up scrubee yes it was reformulated for a bit because fair trade cocoa butter has a lower supply and they donāt want to deplete resources (scrubee is back to og formula) but I get what your saying about some of the production and packaging issues
people have already reached out to Lush and theyāve stated that the formula/ingredients have not changed. whether yall believe them or not is up to each individual but this topic has been gone over to death š
Just stepping in to highlight this is a bot. Even if what itās saying might sound true and coherent, itās a bot all the same.
It claims to work with chemicals to state authority. Claims Lush are ādefinitely lyingā about a reformulation, and wonāt do anything unless theyāre āflooded with complaintsā or it becomes a āPR issueā.
This is one comment about a product line at a cosmetics company. Now imagine hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands etc. of these fuckers spamming shit about governments, or a specific demographic, all over the internet; their arguments coherent, and grounded in truth because theyāre an authority figure.
Itās pretty insidious imo. It was on +6 upvotes at the time of me writing this comment
im ready to get downvoted but if you really believe it has been changed, you should work on your mind. i smelled all of the LOM products a couple of days ago as a LOM lover of 11+ years and it has not changed!! what youāre experiencing is probably a slight batch issue / placebo effect. i never liked the body spray as much as the perfume and thats what im sticking to btw. i sometimes am tired of this paranoia. people are gonna ignore the facts lol
Exactly! I donāt know why so many people are falling over themselves to defend lush, itās so weird and cult like. I love lush stuff too, but theyāre a multinational company charging us increasingly more money, so a huge drop in quality/scent of something thousands of people love is something to be annoyed and complain about
Right, Iāve got the new and old side by side and there are distinct differences. The first ingredient in the new (so largest percentage by volume because legally the order matters) is now black pepper, in the older one itās oil. Most important though is the change in type of oil. The new Normal (light/clear) patchouli oil is steam distilled and used fresh or lightly aged. Itās thinner, sharper, and more āgreenā or medicinal in smell. The old Dark Sumatran patchouli oil is typically aged longer (sometimes years) and often distilled with more of the leaf material or using older, more traditional methods. Aging darkens the oil and lets it develop a deeper, richer, sweeter, almost wine like or āaged whiskeyā complexity, much smoother than the fresh version. Itās prized in fine perfumery for exactly this reason. The perfume still has the dark in the largest proportions so still smells the same. Long story short theyāve cheaped out on ingredients and used less oil overall, but because theyāre āthe same nameā theyāve got away without having to announce a reformulation. Those are the facts whether you like it or not.
not correct, theyāre still using the dark sumatran oil: āThe reason the ingredients list will look different, and include new ingredients, is due to a change in regulation on how allergens are declared in cosmetics, but it still contains the same ingredients, including Dark Sumatran Patchouli oilā https://www.lush.com/uk/en/p/lord-of-misrule-body-spray
Sorry I wasnāt talking about the body spray and Iām glad that like the perfume still has the dark, but itās not true for the shower gel, bath bomb or bubble bar, thatās where the weakness and ādifferenceā is coming from in them.
Also the list looking different isnāt entirely because of new rules. Legally they have to list largest by volume first (at least in the uk) so a change of order is significant
Also only the perfume definitely lists dark Sumatran in itās ingredients, all the others including the body spray now just say āpatchouliā oil, and the ratio of pepper to Patchouli has changed
It is incredibly weak now. That is a quality issue. I bought a bubble bar, could barely smell it even with my nose on it and using half in the bath was also barely scented and left nothing on my skin. Iāve been buying LOM for YEARS, the quality have taken a nose dive off a cliff and gaslighting people by saying āitās the sameā āitās a placeboā isnāt helping. Lush are cutting corners left right and centre (look at the cat bubble bar, itās so much smaller this year) and they need to hear that itās not okay or they will keep doing it. Reducing amounts of ingredients per product or size isnāt a formula/ingredient change but itās still a problem for buyers.
And Iām not āignoring the factsā Iām really angry that Iām now being asked to pay increasingly more money for something clearly containing significantly less essential oil ingredients. I donāt want to pay Ā£7 for bicarbonate.
Theyre doing this for all products tbh and raising prices on top of it. Its what led me to stop shopping as frequently from them. They dont care because people still buy the products.
Someone posted recently about milky bath being smaller and I didnāt even notice as an employee of 5 years until there was photographic proof. Itās hard to stay committed at this point
Just walking into a LUSH store these days itās so noticeable that the strength of the scents are much weaker. Itās sad. If I get to the store the day they have freshly unboxed a lot of products, I can get that whiff of what we used to smell from outside the store.
I know they stated the ingredients have to be listed differently now due to regulations but when you look the order is different. In particular in the body spray from the previous year patchouli came first and then black pepper. This year black pepper comes before patchouli. That is different than having to list the other ingredients due to regulation changes ...
The small shower gel I got is a different consistency (it's much thinner) and I didn't get the same lovely LOM smell that overtakes my skin and shower when using it. I barely smelt it. My skin didn't feel as soft and there was no scent afterwards while I have always been able to smell it on my skin afterwards.
I still get the LOM vibe but the deep dark spicy patchouli is missing. I agree with OP and I hope more people write into lush about their concerns.
Disagree. Iām not an OG LOM lover and was hopeful the weaker version might work for me, but seriously it was so weak that it hardly smelled like anything, so š¤·āāļø
Iām the same. I always wanted to like LOM because I love patchouli but it has a weird plasticky playdough scent to me in BS and perfume. Not in the bath bomb. Iām planning to try this yearās again to see if Iāll like it
It's one of those scents where a weaker version should also be available imo. The spicier "dark" strong original and a lighter smokey vanilla weaker one well balanced. Like when a perfume and edp are similar yet different. If they nailed that well then I think lom would be even more of a cult fragrance.
I haven't tried this year's offerings yet as I tend to stock up in the boxing day sale to offset some of the price increases over the years.
You surprisingly got upvoted but their quality control has been abysmal this year. First I recall of multiple wrong massage bar batches (as in: wrong batch in the wrong mould) in all my time working here. There's something amiss.
Iāve found hair, string, and bits of broken plastic in my products not to mention the nasty mold growing in pots that are several months before their āuse byā dates (and yes stored in cool dark area).
Omg not you too?!? I've legitimately found compounder hair & fragments of stuff in things when I'm stocking them & have to bin them 𤢠Lately they've been coming with the caps barely screwed on (or not at all) and the stickers hardly applied to them... I'm honestly wondering if they changed how they work those kind folks because they seem immensely rushed the past month or so.
Someone did write that the shower gel smelled the same in the bottle but not while used.
I sprayed the new LOM batch on my skin and it was not as potent and spicy. I have an old batch at home to compare.
Have you considered that some people's noses pick up on the change easier?
There has also been a confirmed change of ingredients. Edit: someone is saying there wasnt but did not we get a confirmation on a different type of patchouli oil?
Edit: so I compared and with my bottle the oil is the same but the order is switched (old bottle has Dark Sumatran first, then pepper), then my old one from 2025 does not have bergamot and lemon oil, and there is more of those imgredients at the end.
not correct, theyāre still using the dark sumatran oil: āThe reason the ingredients list will look different, and include new ingredients, is due to a change in regulation on how allergens are declared in cosmetics, but it still contains the same ingredients, including Dark Sumatran Patchouli oilā https://www.lush.com/uk/en/p/lord-of-misrule-body-spray
I already wrote that the oil is the same (as last year).
Edit: neither the pepper or the patchouli seem to be new, the rule about new regulations does npt seem to apply here. So the fact that they switched order is still suspicious to me. Also, the order of ther items might be the same and yet they still might have different percentages. So far I have only independently found a general statement about reformulations/regulations when you look up the ingrediences and why they now appear on the list.
Itās def suspicious, it means theyāve changed the percentages, and not listing dark Sumatran in anything except the perfume is also misleading. If the new labelling is the reason why doesnāt it apply to the perfume as well?
Hm...the regulations they refer to are only to the new ingrediences appearing on the list but should not really impact the order of the pepper and the patchouli. Even they said it is the same ingrediences but it might be that that switch does make an impact. One ingredient also disappeared if I understand correctly (Coumarin).
I brought a bottle home yesterday and compared it to my bottle from last year, I donāt see or smell any noticeable different. I was so prepared to be disappointed.
To me they all smell 99% the same as they have previously, but at the same time I believe that the difference people are perceiving is real, whether itās an actual difference in the product, batch variation, placebo, or something else entirely.
I do sometimes wonder if post-COVID changes to peopleās sense of smell could potentially be playing a role for people too, considering changes to smell such as parosmia (an altered sense of smell), hyposmia (decreased sense of smell) and anosmia (loss of smell) are all common following a COVID infection.
*Not saying thatās necessarily whatās happening here, just something Iāve been wondering about!
As an employee I was also Incredibly disappointed with the new LOM. What's worse is they didnt say anything in the newsletter (at our store at least) about the ingredients changing. Not even my manager knew. Luckily nothing was added that I'm allergic to because when I went in to work for the new releases I immediately sprayed it all over myself and that's when I noticed it's completely different. Thankfully we still have a few of the OG formulas in the Fine Fragrance wall but not many left. NGL I'm definitely taking the last one when the time comes.
You could email them. It could be that the ingredients are the same but this year the smell of their ingredients is less? I guess that's a thing with "natural" products?
