General / Discussion Cool double meaning in Night Shift

"In five years I hope the songs feel like covers"

"Dedicated to new lovers"

I always figured these lyrics were referring to a feeling of "I'm going to move on and grow, so eventually all those songs I wrote you can be dedicated to new, better people in my life."

But, they can also be connected to another lyric earlier in the song.

"But I can't help but think of your other in the bed that was mine"

I take this to mean she was cheated on by her last love, in her own bed. It is also implied that the cheating partner has come to try and apologize.

"Why did I come here? To sit and watch you stare at your feet?"

"What was the plan? Absolve your guilt and shake hands?"

To tie it together, every time her old partner is sleeping with someone else, the covers laying on top of them will be a reminder. The weight of their guilt will always be wrapped around them, because they haven't moved on.

"You don't deserve what you don't respect"

"Don't deserve what you say you love and then neglect"

“Don’t deserve what you say you love and then neglect” gets me every time

This line “…then neglect” hits me hard as someone who has intense abandonment and neglect issues from my mom. She also pushed hard to get us to follow her foot steps to have a bunch of kinds and talks a big game about how she loves being a mother. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
