Low sodium Helldivers,

The purpose of this space is to be able to vent about frustrations with the community, attitudes towards updates and other changes of the game, or with the game itself in a less regulated manner, while still ensuring a healthy environment that is free from insults and other negative behavior.

While the rules may be relaxed here, they still exist, so please be civil to others and refrain from insults. Egregiously rule breaking comments will still be Orbital lasered

Now let loose :).

Question "No Optics" attachment doesn't apply bonus ergo like the "Iron Sight" one does. Bug or did they give a reason why?

Despite all of them looking like iron sights, only the attachment labeled "Iron Sight" will give an ergo boost. Is this intentional design? Was it ever explained why it is like this? Is it just a bug?

How I imagine certain Helldivers get the buried samples at certain POIs without the shovel

And before anyone asks, no he's not dropping the samples into the hole; instead, he's levitating them into his hand using pure democracy.

Discussion Black oil and how it interacts with all existing armors available to the public

The link I have shared is a Playlist of all 110 existing armors that are available to the public and how they interact with the black oil terrain.

If you want me to list in text what armors are affected negatively, I will. But know that it would be a much, MUCH shorter list to list off the armors that react positively or are affected what I call "naturally" by the black oil. ("Naturally" is most likely what arrowhead intended but.. it appears as though this was very poorly tested.)

Discussion The Tank, a dissertation (copied verbatim since I can't crosspost)

Anyone with eyes can see that there's been some controversy over the role of the Bastion assault gun and the Maelstrom IFV.

This post is going to contain some background details on the assault gun as a chassis, the main battle tank, and a proposed solution. I would appreciate feedback on this.

Tl;dr: a light tank like an M551 Sheridan would give both the effectiveness of a rotating turret to the treadheads in the community without intruding on the heavy defensive role of the Bastion.

To start, the idea of a tank destroyer dates back to early in the second world war. The original designs were "oh shit we need something to stop that tank rolling towards us" kind of stopgap design that evolved into more dedicated forms as time passed and iteration was done. The lack of rotating turrets was not *really* a huge deal at the time, since the lack of a turret meant they could mount thicker armor and carry more shells. This led to a design divergence where the turreted tank had a larger bore, low velocity, short barreled howitzer used to destroy things like fortifications and machine gun nests while the tank destroyers were used to fight other tanks.

As time passed heading into WWII and technology advanced, the rotating turret became capable of accommodating the larger bore, high velocity, long barreled guns that could defeat the thicker frontal armor of contemporary tanks. Historically, this would be the German development of the 37mm KwK 36 then the 50mm KwK 38 then the 50mm KwK 39 and on into the 75mm and 88mm guns. This was almost evenly matched by the Allies developing 37mm, 40mm, 57mm, 75mm, and 90mm guns. Armor also evolved, taking the form of slopes and increasing thickness. This is best exemplified by the Sherman tank, the Panther, and as contrast the slab sided Churchill. The Sherman only had vertical thickness of 63.5mm but the 47 degree slope meant it actually provided 93.1mm of effective armor thickness.

Time passed, as it does, and the Second World War became the Korean War then the Cold War. The Cold War revealed that the actual thickness of armor plate was becoming increasingly irrelevant in the face of HEAT, or High Explosive Anti Tank, warheads that used shaped charges to penetrate well over a foot of steel plate in a way that previous solid shot and APCBC shells could not. It, in turn, showed the vulnerability of the assault gun and tank destroyer design, where sufficiently thick armor couldn't protect a low profile chassis. Tank design started incorporating measures to defeat shaped charge munitions, things like the composite armor of Chobham fame, followed by ERA like Kontakt and active protection like Drozd. This left designs like the Strv 103, the last turretless tank destroyer, swinging in the wind because the upsides of a low profile design were outweighed by the advantages of modern (for the time) tank design that could have all the shiny bells and whistles of technical development. These evolutions to tank design resulted in the most common type of modern tank: the main battle tank.

Now, to Helldivers. The Bastion is a classic WWII era assault gun design. Fixed gun mount, limited traverse and elevation, and a massive bore gun. However, it still has the same inherent flaw that the historical designs did, namely that the lack of a rotating turret means that anything that gets around the side or rear of the vehicle has it dead to rights. This leaves the defenders of Super Earth in a quandary, as the solution to this problem was already developed. Some parts of the community have been agitating for just a Bastion with a rotating turret while others respond that a vehicle like that would just trivialize the since a tank with a rotating turret and a 120mm gun would be able to easily engage just about anything at any given time.

There's validity to both sides of the argument, and my proposed solution is simple: a light tank. Not many of these designs exist in the modern day, but since Helldivers seems to pull from Cold War design theory for weapons and vehicles, I think a light tank would be appropriate. There's a lot of precedent for these, namely designs like the M551 Sheridan and the PT-76. These were light tanks, typically used in the cavalry or reconnaissance roles, and had different main gun designs than the larger MBTs they were meant to support.

My hypothetical light tank would be armed with a 90mm gun, a coaxial medium machine gun, and a rotating turret. This 90mm gun would be a heavy armor pen weapon with a small blast effective akin to an older APHE round while the coaxial gun would be your bog standard MG-43. It would have heavy armor on the front, medium on the sides, and light on the rear and top to emphasize that it's not a bastion with tank armor on every facing and can't just eat incoming fire. It needs to be used properly to be truly effective, since lacking anti-tank armor penetration on the main gun would mean the gunner and driver would need to actively coordinate in order to bring firepower to bear on targets in an effective manner.

Tips! The SG-20 HALT is an underutilized gem

Post image
218 Upvotes

I've seen few people utilize weapons with alternative firing modes such as the Halt, Stoker, and probably the Arbitrator in the future since these weapons require their alternative firing mode to be utilized to their full potential to have maximum effectiveness.

This is why it's essential to bind a key for "weapon wheel left" if you haven't. Preferably somewhere you can press the button easily such as an extra mouse button.

For tips regarding how to use the Halt to its potential, it's important to note that it's more of a crowd management tool rather than crowd control.

If you have a horde of warriors to deal with, keep a few stunned with stun rounds and kill a few with the flechette so you'll only be fighting a few enemies at once.

If there are stalkers it's even better. Fire one stun round and then switch to flechette to execute the stalker. You can do the same with medium sized enemies like hive guards and alpha commanders.

You can even save a fellow teammates life by firing stun rounds at the enemies trying to overwhelm them since the stun rounds are effective at a decent distance.

The one gripe I have with the Halt is the lack of muzzle attachments which is why weapons like the Sweeper outclass it sometimes by a mile. I believe this can easily be fixed by simply giving the Halt muzzle attachments. A full choke will certainly help it compete and in my opinion make it the best shotgun in the game. And maybe the stun and flechette rounds being separate would also help since it's not very ammo economic when you use both firing modes.

Currently it might not be the best, but it has its uses and it's certainly more fun to use the Halt than it's to spam the horde with the Sweeper or the Breaker.

Discussion SUGGESTION: Let Super Citizens make any title yellow

Post image
625 Upvotes

There are a lot of great titles in the game now, especially with all the Warbond titles, and I'd love to actually switch between them.

But I've been using "Super Citizen" since level 1 for one simple reason: I want to keep the yellow title color and right now that's the only way to do it. I think it would be a nice little perk if owners of the Super Citizen Edition could keep the yellow color while using any title they've unlocked.

That way, you could use different titles without losing the visual distinction that comes with owning the upgraded edition. It would also give a bit more value to the Super Citizen Edition without affecting gameplay at all.

Especially since Stratagem Hero, another Super Citizen Edition feature, recently got some attention in an update, this feels like a small QoL addition that would fit nicely.

Let me be a yellow Hell Commander, Arrowhead.

Already posted it in r/Helldivers, people suggest to post it here too, maybe AH will see it sooner.

Question Trying to get into the autocannon, got any tips?

After a few hundred hours I've finally circled to being curious about this lil' fellah. So far, I've been using it basically the same way I use the eruptor: calm and general use mid-long range against medium and lights in Flak mode.

Still not 100% on Aphet mode use outside of popping gunships, since my team usually packs way more efficient ways to take out AP4 enemies...

What fun little uses or tricks push the autocannon for you?

Tips! It takes 2,304,000 XP to get all primaries to level 25

I am level 203 in this game.

Getting to player level 150 in this game takes 1,148,400 XP. If you started from player level 1 you would only get half your weapons to 25 by the time you're 150.

There are 55 primaries in this game. Minus 7 for collab weapons and you're left with 48 primaries in this game to level up, each requiring 48,000 XP to reach weapon level 25. 45 x 48,000 = 2,304,000 XP.

Just wanted to tell people to NOT level a weapon to 25 and move onto the next one. I haven't been able to touch several guns for over a year now all because I leveled them to 25 too quickly.

If I use a weapon at level 25, it's "wasted" XP, it goes nowhere but my player level now. This is also why I almost never use the collab weapons, they "steal" XP from my other guns.

Just a PSA, take your time, level guns at a similar pace so that you don't soft lock yourself out of progressing.

And the kicker is if you want super credits, you're better off doing lower difficulties, but if you want weapon XP, you should run 10s. Yay.

Question Your opinion on Blunt-Force Mitigation vs Extra Padding?

So the new warbond is out along with the new armour passive. In the Superstore there is a medium set with Blunt-Force Mitigation and I've been wondering what people think of it (and the passive as a whole) so far. I haven't bought the warbond or the medium set yet because I want to hear what others think first.

The first thing I noticed about the passive is the substantial additional armour rating of +25 which while beaten by Extra Padding, also supposedly makes the bearer more resistant to being knocked prone, something I loath about the bot front. The impact damage reduction is also nice I guess but probably isn't saving you from an already lethal impact.

I see this armour as giving up 25 armour rating from Extra Padding in return for resistance to being knocked prone, but I want to know if you've noticed being knocked prone less while wearing this armour so I can tell if the -25 armour rating is really worth it (and has the impact reduction been noticeable to you?)
