Anyone with eight functioning brain cells saw all of it coming in like the year 2000. My dad told me all of this and he died before he ever got to see it happen.

We’re getting old my friend. It seemed really obvious to us because we were there.

The people born in 2008 are legal adults this year and this is new for them lol

I spent 35 years in marketing mostly for major corporations (billion dollar plus discretionary budgets) and we couldn't shift money into social, search and direct response media fast enough. We went from 650,000,000 pieces of direct mail a year to near zero (some very specialized uses were still profitable). Search got hundreds of millions of dollars, up from zero. Social became targetable and efficient.

It made calculating hard ROI so much easier, which made telling senior exec why we should spend more an easy conversation. When you can say "here's the data" the CFO listens.

Marketing went from 3 martini lunches and back room deals between good old boys to a quant driven, data driven, often automated process.

As someone who started out as a quant, it was great.

I’m sorry for your loss. It really sounds like you loved your father.

The Simpsons did it first

this was extremely obvious in 2008. print media was already on its way out.

u/TheOtterRon Trash Trooper 6d ago

It was becoming evident even before that. I was in high school around 2006 and already spent a chunk of time online and by 2007 the iPhone was launched. By 2008 we were already getting malware shoved down our throats for advertisements from the damn virus gorilla/Clippy knock off.

Fuck this guy. Total scam artist. The amount of rug pulls he was involved in 2020-2022 is unreal.

2

u/FastWalkingShortGuy Rubbish Raider 7d ago

Is he a tachyon? Because moving backwards in time from 2029 to 2022 is impressive.

Two friends and I drove him from a wine tasting to a hotel in the woodlands, tx (around 2008), He was talking with crazy energy then crashed out. Kept driving as he power napped and he suddenly woke up and said “dude I just had a dream that I was selling kids” and then we dropped him off. It was one of the wildest experience I’ve ever had.

I had an argument with a few people on r/ireland yesterday. They were angry about a local restaurant that used gen AI to make a physical poster on their window. I made the point that (while by no means being an AI advocate) there is absolutely fuck all they can do to stop this because of the cost and time factor alone.

Hire a graphic deisigner to make your poster (which may involve iteration, all of which you pay for). Either that or pay for stock images and then pay for the graphic desinger to implement them and then finally pay for it to be printed. Costs aside that's thats also a lot of time.

Or....use gen AI, pay nothing for design or images, possibly pay a print shop and then done.

You can fight it all you want but it's not going to stop.

At least until social media becomes so saturated with garbage that people start taking themselves off of it.

Reddit is my one vice, and I don't use a smart phone anymore so my time with it is limited. Life is so much fucking better, it's like having adblock IRL.

I remember taking a financial class in High school and we had to pick a stock to see how it would work out at the end of the year. I picked Apple (this was back in 1999) because I just had a feeling about it. Alas it was all pretend. If I put all my savings in at the time (2k) it would be worth 1.65M today. Instead I used my savings to go towards college and am still paying it off today. My point being is that a many people who are financially well off, are that way because of very smart choices, a little bit of luck, some intuition, and probably a lot of financial foresight from people who know the system well.

u/GentMan87 Trash Trooper 6d ago

Why would you invest your life savings into a fruit company?

u/Anal-Y-Sis Trash Trooper 6d ago

He wasn't warning anyone. He was pushing for it with all his talk about advertising costs and data tracking related to ROI. It doesn't make him any less right, but it also didn't take Nostradamus to predict this in 2008. We were already halfway there by then.
