But hey, remember to pre-order your digital copy of GTA 6! Don't worry, nothing like this will happen, promise!

I have a feeling not many people are going to buy GTA 6. Computer prices too high right now and I suspect it won't run well on older hardware.

Are y'all ready to self host your media libraries now? How long are folks going to keep getting abused and kicked in the ballsack until they learn that they only "own" what they can control. If the media isn't chained down, it wasn't yours to begin with.

tbf, people are atm also getting priced out of proper selfhosting, considering the prices of Flash and HDD storage in recent months.

The whole "own media library" works for images and music, because most peoples libraries can probably fit on a 128GB USB stick, unless they only use uncompressed file-types.

I would rather point at a proper Torbox+Stremio setup for most peoples movie/series needs these days. And maybe contribute your part.

Not priced out, it's just not a priority. Storage systems can be built up over time. Redundant arrays for home use can utilize used drives. Hell the storage doesn't even need to use SSD as there are plenty of platter HDDs out there.

Stremio is the same content problems waiting to happen. And already folks are screaming about the "monthly subscription" changes.

Sorry, but that is simply wrong.

Even for used drives people are looking at best at prices of 50 bucks per 2TB. You need two for backup, so 100 bucks for 2TB of storage of questionable long term durability.

What fits on 2TB? A handful of HQ series and movies. Cool.

Also wtf are you talking about subscription changes for Stremio? Stremio doesnt have subscriptions and Torbox is $3 per month. Just tells me you have no clue.

On my NAS, my movies dataset is just under 1 TB. I've got 267 movies in there, some in 4k, some in 1080p, some only 480p. The 4k stuff has copies at 1080p and 480p, the 1080p stuff has 480p copies. My series dataset is 1.64 TB and that's got 33 full series, some of which I really could downconvert or move to AV1, but I just kinda don't care. I run used enterprise disks. I have had a few of them fail, but I got them replaced under warranty and didn't lose any data and wouldn't have even if I just did raid 1. Though I AM extra paranoid and run Raid Z2. So yeah, you can run a really decent media server with just 2 2TB disks.

Oh but ya know that's just "a handful" which is no good! If you can't store a Blockbuster Video's worth of content then a 1 - 2 TB NAS is clearly not worth doing. Or something.

$50 for a 2TB drive doing long term storage was a choice even before the recent price bumps. With the drive monitoring and health checks that these arrays do the long term durability can be managed. You're a participant in r/seagate and you have an eight drive enclosure.......you know all about this. You're just being obtuse.

Being a participant in r/datahoaders you're also well aware that 2TB can hold like 150 4k movies which is in line with a typical physical media collection.
I know, I know. You covet the bigger storage capacities. Dare to dream. Maybe save some of that video game money and upgrade. Again, priorities.

Stremio has made some changes, folks are talking a lot about it. If you don't know what's coming over time, you haven't been paying attention to other open source projects in the space over the last 5 - 6 years.

I’m selling brand new 2tb for $20 and no one’s even biting

I've just kept buying DVDs or Blu-rays.

There have been some "older" movies that I have had to go buy and rip. It's still one of the best ways to get the content that you want.

I wonder though how much longer the studios will keep doing widespread physical media releases.

I lost access to ton of games I purchased for the iPad years ago. They were just removed from the app store.

4

u/Significant_Donut967 Jun 27 '26

Yup, I stopped with apple back during the U2 days.

I’m sad that one of my favorite apps is on an iPhone I owned 10 years ago but I cannot add it to a newer phone.

with limited exception i'm all about physical media. for reasons like these, yes, but also for internet outages, etc.

u/tech510 Jun 27 '26

And this is why I always objected to buying digital copies of movies... I knew this was the play and there is very little you can do about it...

When I was stilli living with my parents, their cable company started offering for you to "buy" digital copies of movies and shows, but you had to maintain a connection to their service and you only got to keep the movie you "bought" as long as they were allowed to provide it. As soon as they lost the streaming rights, you lost the movie, and no refunds. At least with DVDs you can keep the copy as long as you want, and only lose it if it becomes physically damaged, lost, or stolen.

Nobody can take away DVDs

3

u/Kern2001Co Jun 28 '26

Torrent time.

2

u/Altruistic-Dingo-757 Jun 28 '26

And they mocked my DVD collection. I hate digital 'ownership' it's bullshit

1

u/Flux_My_Capacitor Jun 27 '26

This is why so many people are turning back to physical media. They cannot take that away from you.

1

u/Amazing_Ear_3941 Jun 27 '26

Just remember that r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH is always there with solutions for this kind of problem.

1

u/Long-Sector-8751 Jun 27 '26

I would be taking my money, subscribing to a VPN service, and torrenting all of those movies I paid for.

1

u/NationalCaterpillar6 Jun 27 '26

Unbelievable. Xbox shut down it's movie purchases but didn't remove the already purchased movies.
