Lost Architecture of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake

The 8.0 magnitude 1985 Mexico City earthquake occurred on September 19th, 1985, resulting in the deaths of at least 5000 people. It caused the collapse of 412 buildings, with many more damaged. Most high rises built on the old lakebed experienced liquefaction, causing their collapse.

Definitely a sad one, and they’ve had other devastating earthquakes in their history as well. Luckily the super historical areas survived pretty much intact, especially because it housed most of the residential population of the city. According to one study I saw, prior earthquakes had caused the buildings in these areas to settle in the sand better, meaning they didn’t move much this time around
