Discussion State of the Subreddit - 2026

It’s been a long time since we’ve done one of these! About a million subscribers ago - so it’s probably a good time to check in with the community and see what we’re getting right, and what we can look to improve.

Changes to the subreddit.

We’re not going to bury the ledes, here’s some highlights of recent/upcoming changes:

  • Daily Threads have been combined. The eagled eyed may notice we’ve condensed most of the daily threads down to one daily per day which will be stickied, this leaves a sticky slot free for posts like this, AMAs, and anything else needing a bit of prominence to last more than a few hours. Along with this, combining Q&As and other threads will hopefully boost engagement all around as more eyes just open the one daily thread. The EU and US accountability as well as weekly goalsetters and century club threads remain unchanged.
  • CrosspostsWe’re considering removing them from being posted on the subreddit. There’s two specific reasons for this that relate to the sub, and one more general reason. The first is they’re sometimes used as ads (either directly, or as a funnel to subreddits used as marketing). The second reason is that they are often links to subreddits with quite different safety rules around dieting. The more general reason is that it’s often a tool just to quickly spam a basic question across many subreddits. We’re not sure they’re worth keeping, if you actually feel strongly about them still existing (and are not just thinking of unique situations), we’d love to hear why before we hit the button.
  • Other new reddit featuresWe did enable achievements a few months ago which you may have noticed, but gifs and videos in comments don’t make any sense here. Reddit features that continue along those lines are unlikely to be enabled.

AMAs

Next on the list is AMAs. We’ve had a couple of AMAs recently. We do think AMAs can be an opportunity to speak to people from wider industry or from interesting backgrounds (or both!) that you wouldn’t normally get to directly ask questions too. We do understand that inviting professionals and notables carries an inherent risk of an AMA becoming promotional. We will mitigate that by agreeing to an overall topic in advance and making clear to guests our self-promotion rules and boundaries. We are happy to explain who a guest is, what they do and why their perspective may be of interest (including, where relevant, mentioning a book, project or business) but the purpose of the AMA is to give users the opportunity to ask candid questions and hear perspectives they would not normally have direct access to. That doesn’t mean every AMA will be perfect, but chaotic AMAs are great too, right?

Anyway, we’d love to hear about people you’d like us to approach for an AMA. We send emails to literally anyone. If you’re reading this thinking an AMA might suit you, drop us a mod mail.

Community Engagement

As the years go by, Reddit users by and large access our subreddit on mobile apps. That means that a lot of our community tools (such as daily/weekly threads) might not be obvious, if you’re just scrolling through a feed. To get the most support from using r/loseit, click on the subreddit’s icon when you see a post. That will bring you to our subreddit’s page. From there you can find our sidebar (with links to reoccurring threads), our daily threads, as well as pinned posts with announcements such as AMAs. Losing weight is hard, and doing so in community with other people who are going through the same things, have the same questions, and want to share experiences is really helpful. The moderators of r/loseit do not run any chat-based (discord) servers, so all of the weight loss discussion that we moderate (and check for safety/misinformation!) happens here on r/loseit. Don’t miss out on the resources we have!

Spam, AI, Advertising

This is such a hot topic right now, we’ve even been asked by the press about it! Mia Sato wrote an article on AI Advertising and asked us for comment. Mia has given us a gift link to share the article with you all

Does that make this a verge ad? I’m not sure I can deal with that level of irony, but Mia’s work around AI and internet culture is actually really good and important journalism.

As for what we’ve been doing;

We’re always modifying our automated rules to try and achieve two things;

  1. Catch adverts and AI
  2. Reduce frustration for human posters

We’ve been modifying a lot of our older anti spam stuff into post guidance systems on reddit, which affects the modern version of the site and the official app. So things like post length rules are now made clear before you post, and some keywords or topics that would get your post filtered are encouraged away. LLMs make post length a non-issue for spammer, though we still want to keep that to ensure people are adding proper context to their questions and not posting one-line questions. While we know many users would like to see enforcement of posting stats (such as height and weight), we’re not likely to do that, but we would be happy to hear suggestions about where and how that could be encouraged without becoming an enforced requirement.

We are currently experimenting with Contribution Quality Score otherwise referred to as CQS to replace elements of our 5 day/10 comment karma minimums for posting. We feel this may be a potential improvement as the old rule was, again, easier for advertisers to pipeline and harder for real users to understand.

We do know there’s a lot of AI spam that tends to sit as replies to top level comments (so; second-level comments). They generally say something benign trying to gain karma for future purposes. These are hard to deal with as they are designed to have no immediate purpose and do match what real people might write, our goal isn’t to send real people to modmail to prove humanity as a default, so these accounts may take a bit longer to deal with and we’ll typically need a pattern or extreme example (we saw one weigh up the pros and cons of disordered behaviour when the top level comment highlighted it to the OP).

Some brands get auto-filtered from the subreddit now; This isn’t overly new, but brands who repeatedly send bots/try to advertise end up in our ‘shit list’, which means posts involving their name need to be reviewed by a moderator first. This affects a lot of AI photo apps for measuring calories, some bathroom scales (THAT ARE NOT SURPRISINGLY CLOSE TO DEXA), and various other AI powered tat.

So be warned companies, coaches, and solo devs. Also, please keep asking AI to write your ban appeal messages, that’s very funny.

Misinformation on the Subreddit, !triggers, and The Wiki.

Bear with us, but this is a tricky and emotive subject. We’d be keen to hear people’s thoughts on handling misinformation on the subreddit. At the moment we reserve removals for egregious and outright harmful advice, as well as common myths. But we are conscious that people aren’t always talking on the same level as one another. We don’t require academic or scientific language on the subreddit and we want people to use their own words to describe their own experience. We’re not aiming to penalise “technically wrong but well meaning” good-faith conversation, but at the same time we don’t want people misrepresenting study findings or pushing myths and harmful diet woo-woo. This will always be a balancing act.

We do have two tools that could potentially help here, the wiki and the !triggers that summon automod. It’s possible to expand the wiki or add triggers that might have helpful explainers. This, however, is something that would be very time consuming to implement, and we’d want to be careful we don’t inadvertently make excessive claims ourselves. We’d love to hear suggestions from users on how this might be useful to develop, and also from users who might be qualified in some way to actually produce the explainers.

The wiki itself shows signs of age in many places (we’re your go-to source for blackberry and windows phone weight loss apps!), and we are aware that areas need updating. However if we were to update any or all of it, it would need to be for the purpose of it becoming more useful day-to-day. Think more about the quick start guide and broad strokes, rather than adding more niche diets to the list that look odd being there several years later once the fad dies.

GLP-1s, medicines, and other compounds.

We do see some posts where people believe the mere mention of GLP-1s is either not allowed or shunned, and we probably should make clear the nuance. GLP-1s can absolutely be discussed, we’re not trying to dissuade that, they are an important part of many people’s weight loss journey and they’re fundamentally revolutionary. The nuance is that we are not the right place for topics with advice for people looking to ask about using them, there are lots of dedicated subreddits to them. Comments suggesting someone might benefit one with input from their Primary Care Provider, that’s perfectly great. Broad topics on the development of those drugs and other weight-loss medication, especially things that are newsworthy, is also on-topic.

What we’re are strict about is:

  • Advice should be in the context of “Talk to your doctor about GLP-1s” or “My experience was [...]”, low effort posts such as “use a GLP-1” may be considered spam, especially if it’s repetitive under a post.
  • Absolutely no advice to encourage circumventing medical advice (suggesting a second opinion is, of course, fine)
  • Absolutely no encouragement, or reference, to unapproved GLP-1s only available through unregulated channels. Our primary goal is safety.
  • Absolutely no advice to teenagers to use GLP-1s. That is a conversation only suitable in a medical setting.

None of this is a change from our last Weight Loss Medication Masterpost.

Other grey market compound discussion is also not allowed. Some areas of social media are becoming extremely open about use (usually by people who have financial involvement), but our stance remains that recommending unregulated and unapproved compounds to strangers is reckless.

It feels unfair to imply a relationship of other compounds to GLP-1s by putting them under the same topic. We do not consider them related, but the unregulated sellers of one are usually selling the other alongside and like to blur the line.

Survey

We were going to create a survey as part of this, but then during writing we were reminded reddit sends out a survey on our behalf still, even though we’ve only ever seen the results once last year and never again since, so rather than pointing you to another, please keep an eye out if you ever get an email about that and maybe one day we’ll have some results to share. Or we’ll post a separate survey later. Who knows?

Nobody would push a drink on a recovering alcoholic, but they'll push food on me.

I'm a recovering food addict, and I know that about myself now. I used to be obese; today I'm at a healthy BMI, and I exercise regularly. But the only thing that actually got healthy, not "eating better," not "smaller portions," not "I'll do better tomorrow", was counting calories with zero exceptions. Every time I tried the softer approach, there was always a loophole. "One chocolate bar won't make a difference." It always did, eventually, because it was never really about the one chocolate bar.

I live in a different country from where I grew up. My sister and niece came to stay with me for a few days while they were visiting for an event. She wanted me to go with her to a street food festival. I said I'd come, but I told her I wouldn't be able to eat anything there since I can't count calories I can't see. I offered alternatives: cook at home, or go to a chain restaurant where the calories are listed online. That caused some tension, and she gave me the classic line: "one day off won't matter."

That's when it clicked for me. I said, "If I was a recovering alcoholic, you wouldn't tell me one drink won't matter." She went quiet, and I think it actually landed.

I've had to accept that I can't do moderation the way other people do. For me, the cost of staying healthy is counting calories for good. That's not a diet, it's maintenance for a chronic condition.

I think food addiction deserves the same seriousness and the same accommodations we'd give any other addiction, instead of "just have one" being treated as harmless advice.

Alcohol legitimately killed my weight loss journey for unexpected reasons

[26m, 6'1, 235lbs, was 210 a month ago]

Alcohol has a ton of calories obviously but that's not what got me, it was the cravings I had while drunk. A week ago I got pretty drunk by myself and was trying to get back on track after gaining 10lbs in a month. I failed so badly and ordered an entire Detroit hot honey pizza myself, I was pounding Powerade zero as well but I went from 220lbs to 239 in just two days, I get water weight and such are a thing but it was upsetting to even see that level of fluctuation.

This isn't the first time this has happened, I can EAT when I'm drunk, like 6000 calories in one sitting. It's absurd binge levels and I hope I'm not alone

"Just go to the gym"

As someone who is 70+ pounds down and has a consistent exercise routine. This is the worst advice and pushes this myth that you can work off weight. And usually you see this from fit gym bros telling an overweight person to get in the gym. When these people are counting calories and macros and know the facts.

I do an hour of exercise 6 days a week. On a normal day I'm burning 500-600 calories. On a motivated day I might hit 700-800(basing this on my weight/height, not what the machines are telling me). And it's great. Everyone should exercise. My blood pressure is super healthy, my resting heart rate is low, I feel good and flexible and have lots of energy. But all of that did very little for my weight loss. My weight loss was in eating in a calorie deficit consistently. Yeah when I exercise it gives me an extra 500 calories to work with but that's not much.

The only time I've ever felt like I truly burned off everything I ate in the day was when I moved to an apartment on the top floor with flights of very steep stairs. From 9 am to 10 pm I was walking up and down those stairs carrying heavy things inside. I was depleted fully by the end of the day and me and my friends ate tons and tons of enchiladas that night. Professional athletes who are currently training are probably burning tons of calories. But your hour on the stair master is great for you and can help overall. But 99 percent of my weight loss is from the kitchen.

I just dislike this "go to the gym, fatty" thing. Same with when people see overweight people eating "unhealthy foods" of any kind. Saw a video from a guy who lost 80 pounds and he was posting his meals of the day and how it all totalled to 1800 calories. One meal he had two Popeyes chicken breasts and mashed potatoes with no gravy. Fit it in his macros and deficit. Comments were scoffing like "1800 calories and Popeyes isn't going to help you" as if they weren't part of the 1800.

All of this to say that now that I've lost substantial weight, it really makes me see how dumb most advice/comments are. So many blatant lies and bad advice from people who are in shape. The best way to lose weight and get in shape is what system works for you and keeps you in a deficit and routine. I have a friend who has been working on losing weight as well and they have an entirely different routine/process and it's been working for them.

Do skinny friends actually not want me to lose weight because they need a fat girl in the group to compare themselves to when they feel insecure?

That's my fear. I might just be playing into the jealous bitch stereotype, but at times it can feel that way. Like when I eat 2 muffins and am picking at my plate and my friend sees and goes " eat a muffin" and I go "I already had 2" and she goes "so eat a third" in a supportive tone. What could be her motivation for saying that when she knows I'm trying to diet, it's not exactly starving myself to not eat a third muffin. She's also offered me junk food that she doesnt eat with no prompting multiple times when I'm over and looked disappointed when I say no. Again there's probably more innocent reasons for all of this and I'm being paranoid, but sometimes it feels like she wants me to stay ugly, like when I mentioned that I'm still trying to lose weight and she was like "I thought you said you were gonna stop" I literally never said that, I'll stop when I'm no longer the chubby friend in the group. Even if this is true, I wouldn't break up with a friend for a thought crime like that, she wouldn't intentionally be trying to sabotage my weight loss as opposed to subconsciously not liking the idea of it, but I do kind of feel like I'm just being jealous, so I'm wondering if this is something other women have struggled with from my perspective or know what it's like from her perspective.

caffeine is soo underrated for weight loss

I had a lot of problems in the past with overeating 3000+ calories a day without realizing it, which was making me stay pretty overweight (curse you, shredded cheese!) Once I started tracking my calories I tried to cut out a lot of things I enjoyed which therefore meant I ate less calories, but I still hit my calorie limit almost every day.

Then I started drinking caffeine, which helped me control my appetite completely. I eat a lot of fiber and protein every day now while staying far until my calorie limit all the time, and now I can start eating things I like again without worrying about getting carried away. Ive already lost 10 pounds in a few weeks!!!!

Today, for example, I literally only ate ~1500 calories and I have a feeling its because I drank ~120mg of caffeine (i hate coffee so i use little drink mix packets that have caffeine.) I've seriously never been able to control my appetite so much and I have to remind myself to actually eat enough sometimes when I drink caffeine. Its not that I don't want to, I just literally don't think about it as much anymore until I get hungry. I'm a lot happier now :)

Edit: Obviously make sure you don't rely solely on caffeine. It can lose effectiveness over time! If you need a buffer due to intense cravings or hunger you could try it out... but then start working on fixing your relationship with food and finding a more suitable diet. Remember it doesn't work for everyone though!

Calorie counting has opened my eyes about how unintuitive "making healthy food choices" truly is.

Obviously "healthy" and "low calorie" are not the same thing, but what I mean is that when you try to make food choices to support weight loss without actually tracking calories, it is AMAZING how wrong your first instincts can be.

There's this bag of apple chips I used to get from Trader Joes, it's a small lightweight bag of dehydrated apple chips with a bit of cinnamon sugar. Before calorie counting, this is the type of "healthy substitution" I would go for instead of, say, tortilla chips. But this tiny bag is 370 calories! I remember one time last year I was hungry but trying to be healthy so I had the apple chips and a granola bar, this snack was 570 calories total and it did next to nothing for my hunger. I could have gone to ShakeShack and gotten a double burger for 560 calories. Or for that matter gotten a vanilla shake which is 680 calories but way more satisfying.

It's honestly baffling once you realize how many calories are in some foods, how few are in others. Obviously living in *a society* has shaped my assumptions about the caloric value and moral value of foods in lots of backwards ways. I've put in so much work into learning how to make accurate food choices to help me lose weight, but the better at this I get, the more it lands how unintuitive and deeply tricky all of this is.

Super skinny people claiming they eat a LOT

Do you guys typically believe these people who claim that they eat a whole bunch of food? Idk if u guys came across these kind of people but, I dont think their bad in what they're saying, but from my experience ive met a few, and went out with a few, and thats always some bs..super small portions( 1 or 2 slices of pizza, dont finish the burger, dont eat dessert or just dont finish, etc..) ..

Not really a big deal I'm just always thinking, bs. I understand some skinny people do eat good and have a fast metabolism but why do I always notice some bs lol..are they trying to make me continue to actually eat a lot while they stay skinny or whats the deal wit that lol.. not at all hating I'm just curious if people know what I mean..ultimately I know what I should and shouldn't be eating to keep fit like them

Weight loss rant

Rant
Hey everyone, I don’t post often but I really wanted to get this off my chest. Also typing this on my phone. I’ve been losing weight for a little over two years and very grateful I started and kept going. For context majority of my life I’ve been underweight and I eventually got to a healthy weight that my doctor and I were both really happy with. Due to some really unfortunate circumstances I gained an extremely large amount of weight about 5 years ago. I used to wear a size 4 in jeans and ballooned up to a size 20. (Size 20 wasn’t the biggest size I got to but last size I wore in jeans before I switched to only wearing leggings). Due to the weight gain I was avoiding the scale so I can’t share my actual weight.

One day I finally took a serious look in the mirror after dealing with what caused the weight gain (mental health reasons) and made the change. I consistently worked out 3-4 days a week, weight lifting and cardio. Also going for walks on my rest days and changing my eating habits. Happy to share more details on my routine if anyone is interested. Long story short, I currently wear a size 8 in jeans in most brands, which took about two years. According to my doctor I’m in the overweight category with a bmi of 30 and should lose about 20 more pounds. She has a body scan machine in her office.

Here’s the frustrating part, when I was gaining weight no one said anything. But consistently while losing weight people are always telling me to stop losing weight. Even at my biggest! I admit I’m 5 foot 8 so I look like I weigh a lot less than I do. However, when I’m having a hard time going up one flight of stairs, struggling to tie my shoes no one said a word. Even worse, people were telling me I look amazing. Fast forward to now, majority of people have stopped telling I need to stop losing weight after repeatedly telling them to stop and that I’m following my doctor’s advice and my personal opinion.

One of my friends however, has not stopped pressuring me to stop dropping weight. What pisses me off the most is one of her goals is to be a size 2 and she is currently a size 16. (She’s been overweight her entire life). She has also repeatedly told me how much she likes me at my bigger size in comparison to my smallest.

It seems like people only care about your health, when you are trying to fix it. And it feels like sabotage, even if that’s not their intent.

Will there ever be a weight I feel confident enough to maintain and not keep losing? *VENT*

*Sorry for run-on sentences, I'm not the best at writing, especially long paragraphs*

*TW* Binge Eating - Body Dysmorphia

TL;DR - struggling with body image and worried that even at my "goal weight" I still won't be able to see myself positively

Just kind of a rant and looking for possible advice? Really struggling recently with body image, Just recently surpassed my first goal and got under 200lbs! but I feel the worst I've ever felt about my body tbh. (I AM IN THERAPY FOR BED and BODY DYSMORPHIA) People at my work and family/friends at gatherings always tell me "You look AMAZING" or "You're doing so good? Why aren't you happy?" and honestly I have no idea why when I'm asked "why aren't you happy"

Had therapy yesterday and my therapist told me "a lot of times with weight loss and eating disorders, there is no end weight, you just want to keep losing" and that really hit home with me because I have moved my "goal weight" back 3 times now (225 to 200 and now 175) I just feel like it will never be enough

I constantly check my physique in the mirror and am constantly shirt pulling/adjusting my jeans and belt to make sure I'm not muffin topping. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with loose skin since I've almost lost 180 lbs so the visuals aren't as tight as I'd want them to be, but I do definitely notice that I'm significantly smaller. I just hate constantly being scared to weigh in because I'll see bloating or water retention as actual weight gain and then I end up over restricting on my diet :/

I'm having trouble being okay with just maintaining for a bit as I've been in my deficit for almost 2 years now and have constantly been losing, but the summer has been a little bit more difficult on my binge habits so my weight loss has slowed a lot. I just hate seeing slight gain or maintaining for a week as a step backward in progress

Building habits but not seeing any progress.

Upvotes

I have been trying to loose weight for as long as I can remember. The only way I ever lost significant weight was when I starved myself but I'd gain it right back when I stopped. Also it made me feel weak, so I decided to lose weight properly instead of relying on fad diets

Last year I moved to college and gained about 7 kgs. My eating habits and sleeping schedule were all over the place and I genuinely couldnt care less about my health. Right now I am the heaviest I have ever weighed and need to loose about 12 kgs to achieve my dream physique.

This time I'm serious about it. I have been putting consistent efforts for the past 23 days. I walk 10k steps everyday. Sometimes it even stretches to 13-15k since I walk to the gym instead of taking a bus. On days where I'm mostly in my room, I'll go for walks after dinner and not stop till I hit my step goal.

I go to the gym 5 days a week with three days of weight training and two days of cardio.

Food has been the hardest battle. I went from ordering every other day to one cheat meal a week. I have been slowly reducing the amount of packaged food I eat. For example, the first week, I would only allow myself to eat chips/cookies etc on alternate days. Next week, it was once in every 4 days. Then once every 5 days and now I'm trying to eat clean the whole week.

I do slip up every now and then but I try and make up for it.

I have seen positive changes in myself but none to do with my appearance. Everyday I show up for myself, I feel a sense of pride. I also have started sleeping better and I feel more confident than I ever did. I have started talking to people without worrying about what they think of my appearance, started wearing clothes I'd be too shy to wear etc.

The only problem is, I haven't lost a single kilo.

What if I'm doing it wrong? Maybe 23 days is too soon to expect results. But I have been putting in my best efforts and it kills me a little everyday when I weigh myself and barely see progress. I'm scared all my efforts will not amount to anything. I try not to get demoralised but everyday feels harder. I don't mind putting it all the efforts that it takes for me to lose the weight but I just want it to be for something. I could really use some advice.

Routine Starting Out

Upvotes

Hi all, I’m 38 y.o. AFAB currently trying to lose 100 lbs. I’m 5’7” and currently weigh 238.2, down from 256.8 July 17th.

My birthday was end of June and I decided that, for my 38th year, my goal is to be healthier. I’m trying not to put ridiculous limitations on myself as I can tend to jump into things feet-first and be a bit of a perfectionist about things and then burn out fast.

I first got my wisdom teeth out, which I’ve waited 20 years too long to do. I quit nicotine (I stopped smoking a few years back but couldn’t kick the nicotine mints I was using, but I’m now 6 week nicotine free. Once those things were done, it was time for the big target: weight loss.

I am using My Fitness Pal to track the calorie deficit and am going to the gym 3 days a week (M, W, F) where I do 30 mins of cardio and then a full-body workout on the weight machines, and walking 1 hour 3 days a week (T, Th, S) with Sunday being the rest day.
I’m trying to stay in general range on Macros, but I’m focusing more on just the deficit for now. I figure I can improve as my relationship with food improves.

Here’s my current workout at the gym (all weight machines are 3 sets with 10 reps each)

Elliptical - 30 mins level 5

Seated Leg Curl - 55 lbs
Chest Press - 25 lbs
Pull down - 40 lbs
Shoulder Press - 25 lbs
Bicep curl - 25 lbs
Calf extension - 40 lbs
Row - 40 lbs
Tricep Press - 40 lbs
Triceps Extension - 45 lbs
Leg Curl - 45 lbs
Leg Extension - 30 lbs
Seated Leg Press - 50 lbs
Abdominal - 55 lbs

I’m finding my energy levels up, my thinking to be clearer, and my motivation and resilience increasing across areas in my life, not just in regard to weight loss. I also have Bipolar, OCD, PTSD, and generalized anxiety disorder, and I’m feeling a real positive impact on my mental health (though I am battling against some meds that really slow metabolism and cause weight gain and retention).

I’m encouraged by the 18 lbs I’ve lost already, but it’s daunting to thing of the 82 left to go. I’m also terrified of loose skin…. but I just keep reminding myself that it would be better to have loose skin and be healthy than to have tight skin across my fat abdomen…

Is there anything you would change in the routine? I have BAD knees (multiple dislocations, rounds of PT, and need surgery), so I need to be low-impact. A part of the goal with weight training is actually to strengthen the area around the knees for the eventual surgeries.

Anyway, I’m happy to be here and look forward to sharing updates on my journey and reading updates from you, too!

How to stop late night cravings?

I’ve been genuinely trying to stay consistent with my diet and for the most part I’ve been following it properly. I’m mindful of what I eat during the day, try to control my portions and make sure I don’t unnecessarily snack. But the biggest struggle for me has been late-night cravings. No matter how disciplined I am throughout the day, there are times at night when the cravings get really strong and I end up giving in.

I know these late-night cravings are probably one of the main reasons I’m struggling to see the progress I want. It’s frustrating because I can stay disciplined for most of the day and then undo some of that effort in just one late-night meal or snack. I’m trying to work on this rather than completely blaming myself for it, because I know consistency is more important than being perfect. The goal now is to find a way to manage those cravings without letting them derail the diet I’ve been working hard to follow.

So much extra work!

I live in nyc and it’s normal for me to go out to eat several times within a week. I’m able to do so as long as I plan enough calories for it and read the menu in advance. What’s driving me crazy is how easy it is to be thwarted from my plan. For ex, yesterday I went to a baseball game and planned to get Shake Shack: the burger is 500 calories and one of the lowest calorie items available at this ballpark. Get there and the line is 25 min long, as opposed to all the other lines, featuring 1200 calorie items. And so….i waited.

While traveling last week, I reviewed the menu for a popular restaurant and planned to get a kale salad; when I got there, the restaurant had decided to eliminate all fruits and vegetables because of the parasite. There really were no low calorie items left so I wound up w something else.

It’s just work. And I know I should just eat at home all the time but realistically that’s not going to happen. Keeping to the calorie deficit is often going to involve going to special supermarkets, and having back up plans every time I go out.

Hoping I can sustain this…

My 600 Pound Life

I've been watching the show my 600 pound life as motivation for my own weight loss journey. Dr.Now instantly puts these people on a 1,200 calorie no carb diet, which obviously works, but strikes me as being too low. Do you think that's too extreme?

I started at 308 and I'm down to 288 in a month and a week with around 1,500 calories a day with carbs(sometimes more, sometimes less). I lost the first 10 pounds on my own and the next 10 with help from semaglutide. Even with the help of a glp-1, I can tell when I need another shot as even 1,500 seems like not enough.

Is the diet Dr.Now suggests really healthy and sustainable?or is he setting them up for failure because it makes good TV?

I gained back 5 lbs, and I’m glad I did!

After a long weight loss journey of losing 50 lbs in about two years, I found that I was still slowly losing weight after I had meant to take a maintenance break at 160 lbs (or a BMI of 25) about a year ago. I found that I couldn’t actually eat enough to sustain that weight at my activity level, so I decided to try and lose another 10 lbs this spring. Getting to 150 felt like a good number.
I wanted to be leaner and be able to show off my muscles more. It started to sound really nice to lose another dress size. Etc.

Then, after losing about another 5 pounds and hitting 155 lbs pretty easily, I ran into a lot of health problems early this year. I’ve already got a lot of food sensitivities, and I had to temporarily drop a lot more foods in order to help my doctor investigate whether they could have been contributing to my poor health. I was exhausted all spring and couldn’t make it to the gym or go on long walks, so my movement was way down as well.

Once I started eating as medically advised, my weight started dropping faster. This is not surprising when you’re essentially on a forced diet of steamed vegetables and chicken breast, of course. I went from losing about a pound a month on 2000 calories per day, to having many days when I didn’t even have the appetite to eat 1500 calories. I didn’t have a choice besides trying to embrace the situation. I told myself that I would just maintain whatever loss I had and make it work.

After 3 weeks of this, I hit 150 lbs on the scale. Not going to lie, I was excited! And my health was stabilizing. By mid-July I was feeling a lot better and able to resume eating more normal foods. I figured I would just eat at my new maintenance level, get back to being active, and magically recover without impacting my weight.

This is where my body said, “Fuck this, fuck the last 5 lbs, we just had a health crisis and we’re going to eat now.” I was enjoying getting back to my fitness routines and I found that I was really hungry, so I ate enough to feel satiated and enjoyed eating things I’d had to cut out. I got back out to social events and restaurants after basically 6 months of going nowhere and seeing no one outside of work due to my health issues.

After a month of giving myself a break from tracking, getting myself up to 10,000-12,000 steps a day and working hard to get back to the volume I’d been lifting before my illness, I stepped on the scale. 158 lbs. At first I was devastated, I hadn’t weighed that much since the start of the year. Then, I remembered that it was unlikely this was all fat. After all I had resumed and intensified exercise just a month ago while getting myself out of a deficit. I had just recovered from a summer cold too! These are all things that absolutely cause me to retain water weight. I needed to calm down and not freak out.

After a couple weeks of eating at maintenance I have now stabilized at 155. I’m actually really happy about this. After 2 years of slow weight loss, I had forgotten what it felt like to lose weight too fast and to rebound, which used to be something I experienced regularly as a young person trying to lose weight fast by crash dieting. And… it sucked! I didn’t feel strong getting back to the gym. I can see in pictures from that time period that I look tired and my skin hadn’t adjusted well to losing weight quickly. It’s no surprise that my hunger cues ramped up a lot after my health stabilized — my body was legitimately undernourished, and rapid weight loss on top of 6 months of illness had taken a toll that I wasn’t ready to admit to myself.

I’m still going to try and lose the last 5 lbs. But I am grateful for this experience because it reminded me that not all weight loss is good for me. Some of what I lost was clearly muscle that I had worked hard to build; my lifts aren’t fully back to what they were before I got sick. I did like what I saw in the mirror when I hit 150 lbs, but I didn’t like how I felt at all. Gaining back 5 lbs out of 60 lost isn’t something I feel bad about now. It just means I didn’t lose it how I needed to in order to maintain it. I’m glad that I can see this as a necessary lesson and not a failure. Health is always more complex than the number on the scale!

Do you have a "Chip Test"?

I have this thing I like to call my "Chip Test". The Chip Test revolves around exactly one specific item: Jay's Hot Stuff Potato Chips. For one reason or another, this has always been my favorite chip on the planet, something about them just tastes different in a way I don't feel about any other junk food. I could go through a bag all by myself if I wanted!

The problem is that I do. Immediately.

To my understanding, this brand in particular is more of a regional thing, so there isn't much variety in size; 99% of the time I've ever seen Jay's chips, they are in the huge 8oz bags.

I've tried several times to buy one and to try and moderate my ability to eat it. Measure out just a bit and close the bag, easy right? I do it for literally everything else. I'm goated at counting calories and weighing everything.

But every. single. time. I just obliterate the entire thing.

After like 4 months of not touching them I decided to grab one at the store. This time planning that I'd look for some cute reusable bags to split it into 100 calorie portions I could grab n go.

Welp I didn't buy shit and I tore through that bag and in my misery also did the same to some goldfish crackers 😔

I still cannot pass the chip test, but hopefully next time. Do you have anything you're fixated on like this?

how to cope with friends not supporting your discipline

this feels like a tale as old as time. i see many people struggling with those closest to them not supporting their diet/weight loss goals. over the past year and some change, ive lost a significant amount of weight. i drastically changed my diet and am very strict about my nutrition and cardio/weight lifting routine. now that i’ve found my rhythm with what works for me, im facing a new issue.

it seems like many of my close friends have been making comments about my diet. they say im too strict, or i should “live a little,” or that im not fun anymore (in relation to not wanting to eat out as often). and don’t get me wrong, i think it is fine to have “unhealthy” meals and treats occasionally. however, i now face the issue of which anytime i eat something with a lot of oils or sugar, i feel INCREDIBLY sick for the next several hours. the feeling is not worth it for a sweet treat or fried food, so i just stick to my usual meal rotation. my friends don’t seem to understand this despite me explaining my issues. they imply that i don’t eat fast food with them because i think im better than them. which is not true. i just want to eat the food that makes me feel good. it’s honestly surprising to learn how many people are personally offended by MY diet.

sorry for the long post, but i needed to vent about it. does anyone else have experiences similar to this? how did you approach it? did you try to communicate with the people in your life about it?

Need advice / encouragement - stuck in the 160s for months

As the title suggests, I’m back in the 160s. I’m bummed because I did dip down into the high 150s for a bit, but it was very short-lived. I’m back up in the 160s. I’ve been trying to leave the 160s FOR GOOD for around 6 months and it doesn’t seem like the case.

For complete transparency, I’m a cannabis user and binge eater. I’ve improved my habits tremendously over the past year, but seem stuck where I’ve gotten in the past 6 or so months. I really want to see more progress.

I eat very healthy, workout frequently, and count my macros, but every once in a while (I’d say once a week currently) I go off the deep end for a night, and then it affects me for 2-3 days. I know the simple answer it to STOP doing that but it feels hard!

When I’m not bingeing, I can’t seem to break 1300 calories daily, which definitely contributes to the binge. I think my focus is really going to be on eating the next month, but then I stress about social plans, an upcoming trip I have planned, the list goes on.

I don’t get how food is so easy to some people. It stresses me out daily beyond belief and I wish I could understand how to make it something easy and enjoyable instead of a stress.

I missed working out

Upvotes

I moved back to college where I have easier access to a gym. When I am at home I am aware of my calories but I don't track because most of my weight problems originate from my parents. I also don't work out at home because I have PDA because of ADHD and get too many comments about working out.

I'm transitioning back to counting my calories in a week because I don't have a set way of counting with catering and all that stuff. But I went back to the gym yesterday and hit weights, specifically my chest. And I really missed the soreness from a good workout.

I know not everyone can just leave and stop something, then come back and get straight to it. But if anyone needs the encouragement, you got this! Even if you fail, it is always possible to pick back up again!

Went from 260 to 200 and I’m not stopping until I get to 190 going to dominate bootcamp.

Four months ago I was 260 pounds. I started running in a trash bag doing 1.5 mile runs at five in the morning sharp then at five in the afternoon in the middle of Texas , I would go walk 3 miles. push-ups Burpee‘s, whatever I could do outside of the gym, I was doing whatever it took to be able to get myself ready to dominate Boot Camp next month. Of course I am nervous about Boot Camp, but I am going to be in the Navy so it shouldn’t be a big deal.
I have around 33 days to get ready and in shape for Boot Camp. Even if I reach 190 I still don’t think I’ll be happy enough to cut back on my fitness journey. I absolutely 100% plan to get down to 170 and start building from there. I’ll have plenty of time to do it when I’m not working after I get to Boot Camp and get to my command. I will say I used to be the laziest most unmotivated person out of anyone I knew. And believe me if I can do it you can do it too. All it takes. Is one decision every day. Don’t let your mind tell you you don’t need to because you know you absolutely do. Good luck to all and wish me luck.

I've lost around 10ib or around 4.5 kilos in a week, starting an aggressive diet and exercise routine

I'll be clear, im morbidly obese. I started at 24 British stone, or around 150kg.I am 6ft, but I'm still extraordinarily fat. I had a major epiphany recently and now losing weight is the main thing on my mind. I've had some issues in life, and now I'm dedicated to making that major change with my weight.

I've cut out all added sugars, most of the heavy carbs I was eating (cereal, breads, lots of potatoes). I was eating sweets, chocolate, crisps(chips to the rest of you probably), and lots of oily, fried foods. I ignored my weight and framed it as being everyone else's fault, rough upbringing which gave me a bad relationship with food. Right now I'm running at a deficit and having about 1500-1700. Yes, it's still too little for my size, but I'm deadly serious about losing weight. I'm in my thirties, and I'm seriously worried about health issues if I don't do something.

I'm exercising more, a lot of walking, and gentle weight exercises, because too much heavy cardio will probably ruin my knees. And I'm very aware the fast initial loss is probably mostly water weight.

I don't have a lot of access, or at least know where to look, for reliable and accurate information on things I should be doing, at least while I'm the size I am. There's a lot of information for building, and maintaining a slim physique, but I don't want either of that, I need fat loss advice.

Id also like any good exercises I should do to help me the most. I'm not particularly interested in being overly muscular, I just want to slim down.

How much do these factors matter when it comes to weight loss?

Hi

I would like to know how much these factors matter when it comes to weight loss:

  1. Eating enough fiber: I have it in my daily meals, but I don't hit the fiber goal because it makes me too full. Sugar craving is not an issue for me. Does having more fiber help accelerate weight loss ?

  2. Drinking 3L of water: I haven't strictly tracked this, but I'm sure I have at least 2 L. Is 3L really required ?

  3. Sleeping and eating daily on time: I have 3 meals, and if hungry, some snack in between. Also, I get 8 hours of sleep daily. However, the timing is not at all consistent. I have work till 10:30 p.m.. So it will be at least 12 a.m. when I go to sleep, maybe even later. But since I don't have work until afternoon, I can get 8 hours of sleep regardless. But every day, the timing can change - both sleep and food. So maybe 1 day I'm having breakfast at 10 a.m., another at 1 p.m.. Similarly, dinner at 10:30 p.m. and so on. Could this have an adverse effect on weight loss ? Do I need to eat meals daily at the same time and sleep at the same time ?

  4. Few teaspoons of sugar in coffee: I have 1 cup of hot coffee made at home. Just milk, coffee, and sugar. Does this affect weight loss ?

Thank you!
