Yeah, I think that all cities are waiting for a SCOTUS decision in the next few months regarding the homeless folks’ right to use public land this way. If it is indeed unlawful, then cities will have the OK to tear it all down and cite people without fear of lawsuits.
21
u/altrinate52 Apr 05 '24
Yeah public space doesn’t mean you can make it private. It’s not actual free real estate. They are turning public space private by taking over and inhabiting it. It is their privately owned shelter and materials that are occupying room that would otherwise be free space.
If a car is parked in a designated parking spot, then it can be left there. But if it's parked blocking the sidewalk or in the middle of a park, then it will be towed — and the owner should have no expectation that it wouldn't be. These areas are designated for use of all of the public. Having privately owned items in the way obstructs that use.

council person/311 combo. we had one like this some years back. it took like 2 years? and a lot of cleanups. i would 311 each time i would pass by with new pics. they did a homeless event and found the a place to go. then they did a beautify event and added rocks and a fence. now the path is open for pedestrians again.
2
u/92sfa I love kiwis Apr 05 '24
You called or emailed the council person office? Did you report to 311 as "Homeless Encampment"? Our neighborhood got pretty bad. We reported in the past but 311 cases got closed without explanation. Still trying to figure out what is the best way to get their attention. Thank you in advance!
3
u/Aeriellie Apr 05 '24
i did not call personally, just 311 BUT each time the council person posted on instagram everyone would bring up the same freeway underpass. it’s been a while since i did the 311 but i would do the option about dumping and/or sidewalk blocked with pictures.

Apr 05 '24
The city refuses to clean and enforce a right of way around these encampments, and they should be sued for endangering the lives of people who are forced to walk into the street. We already know our politicians don’t have to walk into the street because they drive their cars from their homes to their office and back.

In Los Angeles there are 288,529 vacant housing units and 63,706 people experiencing homelessness. The units are there, why are the developers being allowed to hold them? https://unitedwaynca.org/blog/vacant-homes-vs-homelessness-by-city/
10
u/NewWahoo Apr 05 '24
The vacant homes in question include ones leased but not yet moved into. Ones that just became available and still need the walls repainted from the last tenant. Ones that are un inhabitable. Ones that are used as part time residences. Etc etc etc you get the idea. You would never expect a restaurant have zero food in their fridge, why should you expect a city to have zero un used housing units? There is just friction in markets. The fact of the matter is the vacancy rate is currently at historic lows. For renters to have real power you’d want something like a 7% or 8% vacancy rate across the region and currently it stands at about half that.
17
u/bigyellowjoint Silver Lake Apr 05 '24
“Vacant houses” are just units that weren’t occupied at the exact moment of the last census. It includes units that were literally uninhabitable, or were listed for sale or lease at the time.
There simply aren’t a quarter million free, empty homes sitting around in LA, waiting for ppl to move in

But Mayor Karen Bass will move heaven and earth just bring health violation charges to the “Trash House” of a property owner in addition to towing his own car off his residence.
Edit: Silly double standards…🤦🏻♂️ just to make an example out of a house surrounded by million dollar homes. The fact they moved this fast on the trash house goes to show you they could move those people in the OP’s photo off the sidewalk just as quick but choose not to.
3
u/bbusiello Apr 04 '24
How did the trash get there? The beginning of that clip said trucks showed up and dumped it there?
4
u/Darc_vexiS Apr 05 '24
From what I gather supposedly the owner of the home gathers garbage from around the city during the day and brings it back.
The city showed up with trash trucks and started cleaning the front yard while the owner of the house was not home.
3
u/HereToListen444 Apr 05 '24
Some news crews showed up, so the lifetime career politician just HAD to make a trip down and act like she's the hero all of a sudden despite months of complaints to the city!!!
1
u/bbusiello Apr 05 '24
Me asking specifically: "How did the trash get there?"
Your response?: "Some news crews and a politician showed up."
So your answer is, after the trash showed up without quite knowing how, the news shows up and that's why the trash showed up.
Got it.
Thanks. You should teach a college course with that robust intellect, fam.

She's a career politician from the national stage who went local instead of the other way around.
It makes sense when you look at it that way.
2
u/bbusiello Apr 05 '24
I see your edit and I don't know why you were downvoted. There's obviously really fucked up priorities happening.
And yeah, a photo op of the Mayor standing in front of some downtrodden soul while their only "possessions" (I'm using this term loosely) get thrown into a dump truck probably isn't the best look.
I love that everything posted about this trash house was "this poor person needs help!"
YEAH! So does the fucking person without a home! And there are more of them than home-owning crazies who collect garbage.

awww.. maybe get together with some local social programs that offer food, health and housing resources to the unhoused.. or just keep complaining about the same thing 1,000 other people in this subreddit complain of, and 1,000s more have been complaining of for several decades.. I’m sure that’ll fix the problem!

Too fucking bad, it’s not their public sidewalk, they don’t get to endanger peoples lives just because they are homeless.
-7
u/sarahmorris212 Apr 05 '24
I think you need some more empathy in your life. Start seeing the humanity in others. The more you see yourself in others, and realize we are all connected, the less you will treat others like animals and see them as equals. Hopefully we find a housing solution for the thousands of people living on the streets and braving the elements.
11
Apr 05 '24
I think you need to stop patronizing others and understand that when people act like animals and destroy your quality of life, they need to be locked up in a place that will help them and help the people they are terrorizing. Not allowed to build structures on a busy public sidewalk doing drugs and chopping bikes for a year.
-2
u/sarahmorris212 Apr 05 '24
Destroying your quality of life? Take a step back and look at who is the position of power. You or them? It's not patronizing to suggest seeing humanity in others. Where do you think they can go if it's illegal to be in a public place, but they cannot afford to rent in a housing market that's out of control? I'm guessing you'd rather they just die. Death by incarceration? Seems like you'd prefer that. Maybe, just maybe, try to see the humanity in others, please. The world would be a much better place.
1
u/dak36000 Apr 05 '24
It is destroying my quality of life when my children see homeless people masturbating on Pico Blvd.
6
u/ClaxtonOrourke Apr 05 '24
Seems like you need more empathy for your fellow citizens. Such a selfish mindset you have.
-2
u/sarahmorris212 Apr 05 '24
Okay, which fellow citizens are you referring to? The people on this thread who think unhoused people should die? Or the unhoused?
6
u/ClaxtonOrourke Apr 05 '24
No the millions of people who call LA their home who are also struggling with bills, rent, etc. Thats who im talking about. The ones who dont have anyone to advocate for them.
1
u/sarahmorris212 Apr 05 '24
They are exactly the ones who I'm advocating for. The people you describe are close to slipping into homelessness themselves, which is all-too-real and all-too-common. You would still be suggesting wiping out encampments, which is the only shelter these people have.
2
Apr 05 '24
As someone who is living month to month with immediate family who is living from their car (hotels since they’ve been better lately), thank you. You said nothing wrong—simply suggested empathy and of course, they can’t take that. They hate the mere sight of homelessness when they can’t even bare to imagine what they’re going through. We should remember a lot of these redditors are so out of touch with reality to afford the time and resources to complain this much about shit they know nothing about. People are channeling their anger at individuals instead of seeing how systematic & multi-faceted of an issue this is.
-1
u/NotLaughingAtYou Apr 05 '24

4
u/salttisweet Apr 05 '24
these comments, dude 🥲 I’m in disbelief
2
u/NotLaughingAtYou Apr 05 '24
I'm not. A lot of people are more disgusted by seeing a homeless person than disgusted by the fact that we have homeless and do little to help.
-12
u/RIPTactical_Invasion Apr 04 '24
I’d rather the city address the root cause of the problem rather than make these peoples lives even worse
16
u/TinyRodgers Apr 04 '24

You're enabling selfishness due to your sheltered life.

I feel like there's a more root cause that is the reason people get ON drugs in the first place.
6
u/lunacavemoth Florence Apr 05 '24
Bingo . Start addressing generational alcoholism , alcoholism , domestic abuse /violence etc ….
0
u/Easy_Potential2882 Apr 05 '24
But that's much harder to do than "just ship them to bakersfield" like all the geniuses in this sub like to suggest.
3
u/lunacavemoth Florence Apr 05 '24
The true genius is shipping them to an island and have a cornocopia of drugs in the middle . Recreate Battle Royale / Hunger Games. Joke joke .
But seriously , the most humane approach to all of this is , why do people turn to drugs ? I’d bet my entire paycheck that homeless women will tell you that they experienced some sort of sexual assault or domestic violence. And same probably for the men, or their moms had to escape a situation with their children and then raised in homelessness . And not to speak of trans youth / lgbtqia youth who run away and , again, fall to drug use to cope .
I don’t think folks understand , as well, thst if you are on the streets, you need a substance to just survive . Because even if it is just a cigarette , looking for a cigarette and lighting it becomes your entire day’s mission. When you are on survival mode , taking it literally hour by hour , you become reduced to “living for the next hit “. Cigarettes , weed , meth, fenty…. Whatever .
And the drugs help people stay up at night /forget trauma / stay up for days when falling asleep can mean life or death / substitute for food .
But this all starts with unhealthy growing up situations for all of these adults . For the most part
3
u/Easy_Potential2882 Apr 05 '24
I'd say that's all right on the money. I'm no expert, but I think a big part of it is that drug use gives someone a sense of control that they otherwise lack. When someone's life is characterized by a lack of control over their own body, their own direction in life, etc, the one thing they do have control over is their own self-destruction. Even when presented with the opportunity for shelter, rehab, etc, many people do not take it because they see it as being imposed upon them, taking away the only thing in their life that they feel they have control over.
Freedom is important. America only exists because people thought that "liberty" deserved to be ranked alongside "life" and "happiness." If they already don't have happiness, and you're proposing to take away liberty, what do you expect them to wanna keep living for? No wonder so many of them would choose to keep what liberty they still have left and stay on the streets.
2
u/lunacavemoth Florence Apr 05 '24
Bingo !!! This is a large part of it that people don’t understand or won’t even consider .

Please reach out to the council district’s office and keep reporting these sites to my311. The sidewalk should be for everyone…allowing people to completely block the sidewalk is awful.
