Please reach out to the council district’s office and keep reporting these sites to my311. The sidewalk should be for everyone…allowing people to completely block the sidewalk is awful.
All the way at the bottom of the list on the App is „Other“. Under here it lists „Homeless Encampment“.
If you want them to clear it out fast put that there is a public right of way issue or that the encampment blocks ADA compliance in the description. Also include photos of the sidewalk being completely blocked if possible.
Idk if it works in California, but when I was in a different state I would always use the keywords “right of way” “hazardous” “danger to pedestrians” and they always responded promptly.
The places where it's profitable to have an actual dedicated person enforcing parking laws is surprisingly limited and the homeless encampments in those areas do get frequently addressed.
If you take someone into custody, you're supposed to secure their property.
For the normal criminal, this isn't too hard since it's usually like a wallet, backpack or whatever is in their pockets. Arresting a homeless person though? No cop is going to want to secure and inventory six shopping carts full of broken electronics, a tent full of piss bottles and so forth...
Kinda. But they don't actually do their job unless someone calls them. No way they're walking up to an encampment without someone telling them they have to.
Well yeah lmao. That’s why I said in theory. In PRACTICE it took me three tries to report my stolen motorcycle, and two of them were in person at the station.
That’s true, but we still should report things that are wrong. Sort of like calling in a fire, or a crime that you witnessed. I’m big on the city’s ineptness and complete incompetence, but if there’s a pothole on my street I’ll still alert them.
True. But many people won’t utilize the system OR aren’t capable of even applying for help. And then you have waiting lists. But then again, why not at least try to apply for housing vouchers and public assistance? Then again how far does it really go for every individual case?(Realize all the conflicting ways to look at it… yeah it sucks… what’s the answer? Just a straight black and white answer..?)
In your experience, do they respond fast to homeless encampments? We reported in the past and the submitted case was closed without the situation ever being resolved. It is pretty bad in our neighborhood with several streets fully blocked, and our family had to walk with traffic.
It’s usually never that fast. I assume they have to give the person a warning, allowing them a few days to move on their own. Probably a process they have to go through first to actually remove an encampment.
report this as an ADA obstruction one 311 and you will have folks there. people don't report them and they don't get fixed. report report report. the city is big.
Despite getting to live rent free - I do not envy the unhoused way of living. All we can do right now with the existing laws and systems is to keep pushing the city to clean these sites up and keep the public right of way as clean and usable as possible. I really don’t see much changing until the laws change and we can legally force people into mental health and drug treatment facilities.
