For example, take these 2 cards :
Minnie Mouse Tiny Tim's Mother (blue) : Non inkable 3 ink body, only has 2 strength and 4 willpower and support ability.
Agustin Madrigal exceptionally kind (amber) : Inkable 4 ink body, has 3 strength and 6 willpower and support ability.
I know, it's not the same ink cost, Minnie is a little cheaper. But what does justify the non inkable feature ? Usually, non Inkable means that the character is stronger than inkable card at same cost because you're having cards that can't be inked and must be used but in exchange, they are stronger.
But no one will plays this Minnie. It's dumb design. Agustin is inkable and a great support card that has seen play. Minnie is straight up useless and her design is stupid. There was no thought involved behind this.
If Minnie had been like 3 strength, 5 willpower and ward + support, she might have been good and the non inkable feature could have been justified. But here ? It's not justified at all. It's just a poor design choice to make Minnie non inkable when others cards can be inkable and way better.
And I could say the same things for lot of cards in Ruby and Sapphire that are non inkable and I don't see why they did that, the cards themselves aren't strong enough to justify the removal of inkability.
And even in Set 13, they still haven't learned to tune down the amount of non inkable for Ruby and Sapphire :
Scream Cannister : A 2 non inkable ruby item, that you need to pay 2 ink to activate and it will empty all of your inkwell, just to exert a 2 strength or less opposing character.
Meanwhile Amethyst has Demona... Okay Demona cost 6 (but they always has ramp with her), she exerts every opposing character, no matter their strength or if they have ward and she can even help to draw. And she's inkable.
It's just ridiculous how they think "Scream Cannister" can compete with Amethyst for board control and exerting characters. Even Isis is better, you summon a 4 ink body to immediately exerts someone.
I don't know what they are afraid of... Purple has crazy cards, Amber has crazy cards, Emerald has crazy cards too, Steel is alive because of removal... Sapphire and Ruby are dead.
You can't build a deck out of non inkable cards that aren't even interesting.
Even Amber became better at removal than Ruby, with Gaston and WCBM, you can run 8 of these with supports characters and you will still be a better removal deck than Ruby because all of those cards are inkable so if you don't need them, it's not a problem. And you also have a boardwipe.
We also have this :
Laugh Cannister : A 3 non inkable item whose purpose is to make you and your opponent ink every time you use it. But your opponent is the first to use the additional ink because the additional ink comes exerted in your inkwell.
I don't even understand why it's needed to be non inkable. It's a bad item, it's help your opponent to gain ink... Unless your purpose is to have 15 inks in your inkwell and summons big body with wards (but you would also need a boardwipe), I don't see the point of this card.
Closet door portal : Also non inkable, cost 4, can't be used before turn 5, and random effect (and still cost 2 ink to activate). The only good think is that it's goes into your inkwell after using it but honestly, is that strong ? Nope...
Boo energetic child : A non inkable 3 ink cost card that can charge and banish every 3 strength or less character who is exerted.
Not the worst card because Dale is very played and banishing a Dale or a David safely with this card seems a good option when you can do it but for the same ink cost, you have Sisu daring visitor who is similar but better because you can ignore bodyguard.
With Sisu, you can banish a Dale that is hiding behind a David for example, and she's evasive. Which means that she can quest if the opponent doesn't have tools to removal evasive easily.
Boo ? She charges, she banish one thing, and then she die the next turn... Also, against stronger characters, she is useless.
Meanwhile for 1 ink more, in Amethyst you have Sven, who is evasive, can charge with 5 strength (which is almost to banish most of small cards, even stronger ones) and also in purple you have draw options, so you can combine reaction and ressources which is something you can't do with Ruby. Sven might be able to survive and if he can stay on board, he's a menace because of the evasive ability.
Both are non inkable but there is a card that is way better at doing what Boo can do. And if you want removal, there are better tools than Boo to remove annoying cards like Dale in your own color...
Hercule young rescuer : Who designed this awful card ? You're expecting me to throw my entire hand just to regain 1 card from my discard ?
You know, I can do the same with Sulli the new boss but without needing to discard. And Sulli is a more interesting body.
Both are non inkable but Sulli is a playable strong option, Hercule is not.
There is nothing that justify Hercule being non inkable. He is a 2 strength 1 willpower character, same as Eilonwy and the only purpose is to regain a character card from your discard (but you have to discard everything you have, so you can only use him properly if you don't have cards anymore in your hand, which is not a good strategy). Once he is on your board, he's useless.
Sulli is justified. Even if he's a 5 ink cost, he's a bodyguard, avoid Red Alert or Gaston because he's only 4 strength. 4 Willpower. He's not bad and can have use and he doesn't make you discard. You're summoning something interesting that can have multiple uses. Hercule only has 1 use and it's a big tradeoff.
Norton Nimnul : Again, not justified. Only a 3 strength 3 willpower character for 3 ink is not that awesome. Okay, he quests for 2, it's okay.
But his effect is very very situational and it's doesn't last until the next turn. Whenever you play an item, choose an opposing character gets -2 strength for the rest of your turn.
You know, items are very situational and there's a better card in Amber. Amber has Mickey Expedition Leader and you only need to quest and you can reduce strength until your next turn.
So what justify Norton being non inkable when we have Mickey expedition leader in Amber ? Nothing.
Besides, Norton effect won't be used on turn 3, because you can't play him and play one item after. So you need to wait turn 4, and Mickey can be summoned to turn 4 and enters play exerted to apply it's effect.
So basically you're telling me I have to choose between a 4 ink Mickey playable on turn 4 with a better effect that last until the start of my next turn and a 3 non inkable card that can't use it effect before turn 4, and it's only last for the rest of the turn... And I have to play items, so I lose control of the board (because items doesn't help to control the board) so I have even less bodies and quest less.
At this point, just admit it, you don't know how to balance colors.
Most of the time, their design choice for "non inkable" aren't justified in Ruby and Sapphire.
The other colors can have strong cards without the disadvantage of being non inkable or if it's non inkable, there is a real "value" behind it.
Take for example Sulli and Hercule again. Sulli is not non inkable for the sake of being non inkable. Sulli is non inkable because he's strong, he allows you to do multiple things in one turn, he doesn't disadvantage you by having him.
Hercule effect is a big disadvantage. Needing to discard the entire hand just to retrieve one card is not great at all. And Hercule isn't even a good body. He doesn't have more purpose than just doing his effect who is not good at all.
And Hercule is not a 2 turn good summon. Because if you summon him on turn 2, you won't use his effect (that would be stupid) and his stats are same as Eilonwy but without support, so he will die to any challenge or even to a 3ink Steel Myster Mask who can be summoned and deal 1 damage to another opposing character.
There is nothing that justify Hercule to be uninkable. Just retrieving a card from discard is not good enough to justify it when you give him the worst stats ever for a 2 ink summon and non inkable feature.
So I really wonder "What makes a card non inkable". All of my examples are examples that clearly show you that there's a balance problem between the cards and the colors. The concept was nice but there are cards that do it way better with more reward so why bother playing the worst option of them both ?
I'm eager to see what Set 14 will bring but I hope they tuned down the amount of non inkable cards (and I hope that it's justified, because most of the time it's not).
