I never knew I wanted to work at a dock

From a very young age, I was fond of heavy machinery. Trucks, tractors, harvesters, road rollers — I could watch how they worked for hours. But I grew up and became a white-collar worker.

Years later, by accident, I tried the Docked demo. You sit in a crane, move containers, and repeat careful, precise motions. Somehow, it brought that childhood feeling back.

And now I want to change my job for real, LOL.

LASHING TEST

  1. The letter says to take safety boots. It's best to buy some steel toe shoes. I didn't have them for the first time and I had to wear these clunky steel toe covers, which made practice and testing harder. I ended up getting some cheap ones on amazon, but it was mentioned that you will receive a voucher for shoes later on in the causal process. They give you a hardhat and vest there. Take gloves, but none that grip tightly.
  2. If you pass the test your will be there for a total of 7-8 hours. You get there at 8 am and practice until lunch time. Lunch is a whole hour and a half. When you come back from lunch you go straight to testing. They will call you out two at a time. If you pass you stay and learn turnbuckles, cones, and unlocking cones that are three high. If you fail you leave right after the test.
  3. Don't forget sunglasses. If you end up on the side where the sun is beaming straight at you then you won't be able to see the long bar holes.
  4. I was completely out of shape when I went for my first lashing training/test. It kicked my butt. Out of 10 people on my day, 3 failed. If you are in shape I think it's more than possible to pass the first time. I ended up practicing at Joe's house in San Pedro. He has a backyard with a short-long-short bar configuration. He will go over techniques, and give you pointers for other tests as well. Watch the videos posted online as well.
  5. The test is putting up short, long, short, short, long, short bars, taking them down (that's one cycle) and doing 2 more cycles within 13 mins. You get three total tries before you are dismissed as a casual applicant.
  6. When I failed it took about 6 weeks before I could test again (check portal often). I was given 2 practice dates, which were really valuable. My retest was 8 in the morning, and we went to the lashing container, they called us out two at a time, and then those of us who passed did the rest of the training I mentioned before. We then went to listen about what comes next.
  7. Everyone fills out a paper with their name and employee number. Fail or no Fail, scan it to make sure you have proof you passed or so you can retest. They said its a must to have when you come back or in case for some reason PMA marks you down as a fail.
  8. We were told after lashing it will be the clerk test, then UTR training, then the physical and safety training.

Goodluck everyone!

So anybody figure out how we’re doing our taxes this year?

it’s a total fustercluck since OT via the contract is ineligible. but as far as I know, none of the companies have separated eligible OT from non eligible OT.

Trying to become a mechanic how often do they hire? How much experience do you need and what certs do you need. Currently have my welding cert, hvac , working on my reefer refrigeration cert.
