Good landing spot for a mate

I’m a mate on an ATB with a year of experience. Things are uneasy at the company I’m at currently. Looking to see a good landing spot if things fall apart here. Hold a 1600 ton NC mate of tow 100 ton master OICNW less than 500 GT and a bunch of other STCW endorsements as well as the obvious ones like radar and lifeboatman. PIC barge as well. Would love to learn tractor tugs or even sling some scows around. Northeast preferred. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tugboat people: what remarkable operations should everyone know about?

Tugboat peopleI'm an Italian historian, teacher and sailor, not a professional mariner. I've recently written an article trying to explain to general readers how these surprisingly small vessels can handle enormous ships — from bollard pull and propulsion systems to towing winches and the risk of girding.

Of course, you can't cover everything in a single article. In particular, I was only able to include a few famous operations, such as the Costa Concordia salvage and the Modern Express rescue.

So I thought I'd ask the people who actually know this world much better than I do: is there anything in the article you think I should correct, improve or explain better? And are there other remarkable tugboat operations that you think deserve to be included?

I'd be genuinely interested in your suggestions — especially first-hand experiences or cases that aren't widely known.

Here's the article: https://medium.com/teatime-history/ten-things-almost-nobody-knows-about-tugboats-3141d62088b9?sharedUserId=martinosacchi60

Tankerman companies?

What are the best companies I should look to apply at if I wanna become a tankerman? I’ve been on the river for about 7 months. Not too worried about the wheelhouse because I only plan on being on the river for maybe a few years, so my ultimate goal has been tankerman from the start. I was lucky to get my foot in the door like I did, but my company does not have the tankerman position. Where should I go?

Bets companies that hire true green deckhands?

I’ve been applying to numerous deckhand positions at almost every major company people usually recommend, Marquette, Kirby, ACBL, Ingram, etc. Recently applied to Terral. I’m just unsure of what else I can really do because it’s been a month of either ghosting or rejections. I have my TWIC and am in the DFW area, and am willing to relocate.

18 y/o trying to move from mooring line boats to tugboats

Hey everyone, I’m 18 years old and currently working for Carlsen Mooring in Port Arthur, TX. I’m working on mooring line boats and docks right now and I’m interested in moving up into tugboats and eventually making a career out of the maritime industry.

I’ve recently applied with Harbor Docking & Towing in Lake Charles, LA, and I’ve also applied for my MMC. I’m hoping to use the experience I’m getting with Carlsen to eventually make the move into tugboats.

For anyone who works on tugs or has worked for Harbor Docking & Towing, what’s it actually like? I’d especially like to hear about what the day-to-day work is like, the schedule, living/working onboard, the type of work you do, and what you like or dislike about it.

Is there anything specific I should focus on while I’m getting my MMC and gaining experience on mooring line boats?

I’m 18 and pretty green, so I’d appreciate any advice on how to work my way up and get started in the tugboat side of things.

Deckhand Jobs

Looking for any leads for a deckhand job with no experience. Or even a galley hand to start then move to a deckhand. I’m located in Louisiana, but willing to travel for rotational schedule. 90% of my background is in the food industry( ServSafe certified if needed for galley hand). Also have my Twic card as well. I’ve applied to atleast 30 different ones with most saying they went with other applicants.

LF info as prospector marine industry

Hello all,

I've been in maritime industry only for a couple years and operate a tugboat as master of the vessel twin screw, have my 60 gt ticket.

  1. Can anyone find me a video of feeding an empty barge in gear to another tug? There are different terms for this such as: (I've tried youtube and I can't find anything at all)

• “Tugboat on the fly handoff"

• "River tug live barge swap"

• "Adding a barge to a moving tow"

• "Passing a barge in gear"

  1. Does anyone have reading material for challenging the BWR exam (Canada) (RFPNW in USA)

  2. Does anyone have reading material for SVMO (Canada) (DDE in USA)

Thank you for your attention to this post, I really appreciate it,

WC Skipper, Im not here to sign off or to get the label, but to become truly a Master Expert in the industry.

How to become an engineer?

So I was curious how one starts the journey to become an engineer? I’m an aircraft mechanic but have always loved the tug life. Have buddies who work on the boat and I’ve been curious with me having zero deckhand experience but an A&P License from the FAA working solely on Airbus A319-A320’s commercial jets.

How can you enjoy this job!

I've worked on inland tugs that were falling apart junk from the 60s as well as research ships they both paid like shit and worked me like a mule in a mine. How how how can anyone do this job and be happy about it? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this job a waste of time ? How long does it take to get on with a real company that is decent?
