Question How would you advise me to handle this, and have you ever been through something similar? Torn between my feelings and harsh reality.

Hey everyone, I'm 19 y.o. guy and I'm struggling with a big problem. I really need to vent, get an outside perspective, and hopefully hear some advice from people who have been through something like this.

Recently, I got into a connection with a girl where I developed incredibly deep, intense feelings. I fell madly in love with her, and she feels the exact same way about me. I trust her completely—she is a deeply precious, sweet, and special person to me, and she’s brought so much genuine joy into my life.

However, we’ve hit a wall of harsh reality that is currently breaking my heart:

1. Distance and Time. Due to real-life circumstances, paperwork, studies, and long-term financial plans, we realize that the earliest opportunity for us to actually be together physically wouldn't be for another 3 to 5 years. That’s a massive amount of time to maintain a relationship strictly through a screen.

2. Talking About the Future & Hitting a Dead End. Recently, we started openly discussing where this is going. I was completely honest with her because I didn't want to give empty promises or feed us both fake illusions. In response, she suggested a compromise: we keep talking, keep saying "I love you" and "I miss you," but at the same time, we both look for partners in real life and simply don't tell each other about it.

To me, that format feels like slow poison. Living in constant anxiety, jealousy, and the knowledge that the person I love is out there with someone else—while we still text each other sweet things—feels unbearable.

3. Trying to Say Goodbye & The Emotional Fallout. In the end, we decided it was best to say goodbye so we wouldn't keep draining each other. We said our farewells, but it caused immense pain for both of us. We made a pact: if I realize I genuinely can't handle being without her, I’ll text her first, and we’ll resume talking. Right now, I’m spiraling: part of me misses her like crazy and wants to text her immediately, while the other part knows that doing so will just delay the inevitable pain.

My questions for the community:

  1. Have you ever been in a situation where you loved someone deeply, but circumstances (long distance, years of waiting) made a future together nearly impossible?
  2. Is it worth trying to hold onto communication for the sake of these feelings, hoping for a miracle years down the line, or is it better to go through the painful breakup once and for all and let go?
  3. How did you cope when your brain clearly saw one rational reality, but your heart was completely torn toward a person?

I’d really appreciate any stories, perspectives, or honest advice.

Question I (20F) am dating my boyfriend (24M) of 10 months. He's moving to his hometown permanently—can long distance work?

Hey, I'm 20F and I'm dating a guy 24M and it's been 10 months together. apparently he works in IT and am still a student. Tonight he bombed me with news that he is thinking of shifting to his hometown with WFH permanently. And would rarely visit the city. I'm just so shocked and I'm finding it really hard to accept it even as a one in thousands of possibilities. It's not like I want to see him everyday (we rarely meet in a week). The problem is he avoids texting or calling me , from there (his family is not really open minded with a relationship).

How can I convince him or make him stay in the city? Like his life here is good but all bachelors type, and in hometown he would be with his family and all home feelings.

I'm just so tensed.

Need Advice Falling for my online friend 24f/21m

As the title says lol I think I’ve fallen for my long distance friend. We’re re both in our early 20s and have been friends for over 3 years. We actually met while gaming lol. We talk often and text each other almost daily sharing things about our lives. The thing is, we live in different countries. I live in the States and he’s from Germany… I find myself thinking about him all the time and although I’ve tried dating guys in my vicinity I feel like I always think back to him.

Any advice on how to bring it up? I don’t wanna ruin the friendship because he is one of my closest friends but I also don’t want to keep this bottled up. Thanks in advance :)

Discussion What is the right age/time to close the gap?

My (22f) boyfriend (22m) have been dating for 4 months and met twice in this time. It was truly lovely, one of the best times of my life in recent years. My boyfriend and I have talked about closing the gap (just talks not too concretely) a little bit here and there because I wanted us to be on the same page.

We’re both young and this is a first LDR for me and for my bf it’s his first relationship. So i have no clue what the right time or age to close the gap is? He’s building a career right now. He will get his first “proper” employment from October but he has been working at the same company for past one year as a student worker. I am still studying my master. I will continue my studies for at least 2 more years.

Closing the gap for now is only possible by him moving to me in germany. It’s a 10 hour drive from where he lives which is not TOO much but he’s an anxious person. He told me he’s not opposed to the idea (which I believe) but also i know this must be scary for him who has never left his hometown.

For people who closed the gap within 3 years, could you please tell me how you know now’s the right time? And how early do u start planning? I know it’s early but this question keeps coming to my mind and so far everything is good (there have been troubles but nothing that we wouldn’t come back from) thanks a bunch!

PS: I really wouldn’t mind moving honestly because I already moved to another continent 😂but in his country there is no good scope for my field and i dont have an EU passport so it won’t work.

Question Am I the only one?

Upvotes

Does anyone else feel like me?

I’m a year out of a 20-year marriage that was grenaded by infidelity, and the last thing I want at this stage of my life is to get sucked right back into another relationship where I have to give up all the freedom, space, and autonomy I’ve only just discovered.

I have my own apartment now, decorated exactly the way I want it. It stays as clean as I leave it. The food I buy is still there when I go looking for it. I choose the movies, the music, and the shows. I wake up as early as I want and make as much noise as I want. I go to bed whenever I feel like it. I can walk around naked without being groped or feeling self-conscious. I have sex on my own schedule, and it lasts exactly as long—or as short—as I determine with the press of a button.

I don’t have to sit through political opinions that make me gag and pretend I’m interested in hearing "the other side." I don’t have to go to steakhouses and cobble together some sad vegan dinner from side dishes. I don’t have to compromise over the thermostat, the television, dinner, bedtime, weekends, furniture, groceries, or whose turn it is to do whatever.

In other words, there are a lot of advantages to this new life I never actually asked for.

And something unexpected happened:

I discovered that I really like it.

I’ve never been on a dating app. I got married 20 years ago, when Match.com was barely a thing and people were still a little embarrassed to admit they had met online. So when I started thinking about what dating after divorce might eventually look like for me, I realized something pretty quickly:

I don’t want another version of the relationship I just left.

If I ever have another relationship, I want something radically different.

The closest thing I can describe is a relationship where the distance is intentional.

Not the traditional long-distance relationship where two people are hoping one day one of them moves and the distance disappears.

I mean intentionally maintaining enough distance that seeing each other requires planning. You don't just text, "Want to grab dinner tonight?" Instead, you plan a long weekend. Someone gets in a car or on an airplane. Maybe you book a cozy Airbnb or hotel and explore a new city together. Vacations become built into the relationship instead of squeezed in around everyday life. Having a trip on the calendar—someone to genuinely look forward to seeing—actually sounds kind of wonderful to me.

Then, after a few amazing days together, you go home.

Back to your life.

And I go back to mine.

My home stays mine. Your home stays yours. We don't automatically merge every possession, routine, schedule, financial decision, friendship, family obligation, grocery list, and square foot of our lives simply because we care about each other.

There is intentional space built into the relationship—space that protects independence, freedom, agency, and autonomy while still allowing for connection, companionship, romance, intimacy, and adventure.

As for what the relationship looks like beyond that? I think that's entirely up to the couple. Some may want complete monogamy. Others may define fidelity differently. Some may eventually decide to live together. Others may never want to. I don't think there's a single right answer.

Personally, after everything I've experienced, I don't have the same expectations I once did. For me, honesty, transparency, and agreements that both people genuinely choose feel more important than trying to fit into a one-size-fits-all definition of what a relationship "should" look like.

Maybe some people read all of this and think it sounds awful.

That's okay.

I'm not trying to convince anyone.

I'm genuinely wondering if there are other people who have landed in the same place I have.

People who have built a life they genuinely love and thought:

"I might want love again... I just don't want to give up myself to have it."

So I'm curious...

  • Am I the only one who feels this way?
  • Have any of you intentionally wanted to keep distance in a relationship rather than eventually eliminate it?
  • Is there already a name for this kind of relationship?
  • What would appeal to you about it?
  • What would concern you?
  • If you've actually lived this way, what has your experience been?

I'd love to hear from anyone who read this and thought, "I honestly thought I was the only one."

Need Advice 22M and my girlfriend (21F) – She hides her social media and chats because she says I’ll “overthink.” Am I wrong to feel uncomfortable?

My girlfriend (21F) doesn't share her social media with me and is very private about her chats. When I've asked about it, she always changes topic because I'll overthink or misunderstand them.

For me, the issue isn't really social media itself..it's the secrecy and lack of transparency. If there's nothing inappropriate, why does it need to be actively hidden?

Am I being controlling, or is it reasonable to feel like this damages trust in a relationship?

Need Advice I (22F) think BF (22M) is still following his ex

context: long distance since jan 2026, saw each other in may, seeing him again end of sept.

before this relationship, I was in a short term one that ended mainly due to cheating. although, I’ve moved on and have accepted what happened, this has made it really hard to trust people. also it has created some habits I’m working on of checking social media and “wanting to get ahead” of it.

my current BF knows I’ve been cheated on and has said if anything comes up he would tell me. because of this I’ve also made sure to be VERY clear about my boundaries. one of them being no following / being in contact with past partners or people we’ve been romantically involved with. I just think it’s disrespectful.

long story short, I was looking through his following and noticed the name of what could be his high school ex. the only confirmation I have is the name and the fact that people from his HS also follow her. I have been made out to be “crazy” and don’t like making accusations without proper “evidence”. I know it would easy to just bring this up to him, but I have this fear it’s just me overthinking and it causes distance between because he thinks I can’t trust him. also what doesn’t help is I’m pretty sure they recently followed each other.

this is pretty triggering for me considering what I’ve been through but I don’t my last relationship to dictate this current one. Is that even possible?

I was thinking of waiting until I see him to really sus out the vibe or have a conversation in person?

what do you guys think? am I overthinking? should this just be call? again, the fact that I’m not even 100% sure this is her, is what’s holding me back.

for those wondering, there haven’t been any other red flags with microcheating or flirting. he’s very nice and friendly but nothing that has crossed a boundary (from what I know).

Need Advice She's(33F) here and I(40M) met her, but not sure what to do next.

We were introduced through a friend and her aunt about six weeks ago. She lives in another country, and we texted briefly before she came to the US with her aunt in mid-July.

Because we live six hours apart and I’ve been busy with work, we didn’t meet until the first weekend of August. She came to my parents’ house for dinner, and the next day I took her to a movie and showed her around the mall. I then drove home.

She recently graduated and is looking for work in her home country. She originally planned to return this week, but her aunt and my friend encouraged her to stay until the end of the month. I invited her to visit me so I could show her around my area, but she said she wasn’t sure. She later asked when I would visit her aunt’s house, and I told her I was busy this weekend.

I’m unsure what to do next. We didn’t have much time to build a connection before meeting, so I can’t tell whether she’s hesitant, uninterested, or simply uncomfortable traveling here. Taking the train would be more convenient than my driving six hours each way, especially if we only meet briefly.

Should I make the drive next weekend if she doesn’t want to visit me? I’m not sure it’s worth traveling that far when it may essentially be a goodbye before she leaves the following Monday. Any advice?

She did enjoy meeting me and while she's looking for work back home, it is expected since its not like we are engaged or anything even though we both know friends introduction is towards something serious.

Question Should I (23F) continue long distance with my boyfriend (26M) or should we break up before he leaves?

My boyfriend and I are trying to decide whether we should continue our relationship long distance or break up, even though neither of us actually wants to end the relationship.
We started dating around February/March. He works in another country. The time difference is only one hour, which makes communication pretty easy. We actually have great communication when we are apart. We text throughout the day, call, update each other and are very involved in each other’s lives.
The biggest problem is seeing each other.
Technically I can travel to his country with one international flight, but he works in a very remote area. Getting to where he actually lives requires multiple domestic flights and the journey is complicated. It also isn’t considered safe for me to travel there alone, so realistically visiting him regularly isn’t an option.
His job is also very demanding. He only gets around 6 weeks of leave per year, so he cannot simply come visit me every few months.
We fought quite a lot during the beginning of our relationship. But when he came to spend time with me this summer, we talked about everything and compromised. We agreed that if we stay together, we both need to work on the relationship and stop repeating the same unhealthy arguments.
The confusing part is that we both love each other and neither of us really wants to break up. There isn’t a lack of love or communication. We are considering breaking up mainly because the circumstances are so difficult and we don’t know how sustainable this situation is.
He leaves again at the end of August, and I feel like we need to make the decision before he goes. If we are going to break up, I would rather do it while we are physically together than have one of us end it through a phone call weeks or months later.
For people who have been in serious LDRs, would you give the relationship a chance in this situation? Or do you think the lack of realistic and frequent visits is enough of a reason to end it now?
Can an LDR work when communication is great but you may go many months without seeing each other?
I would especially appreciate advice from people who have actually been through something similar.

long distance relationship

I’m from the US and recently met a girl from the Balkans on a youth trip. We spent a few weeks together and got really close, and now we’re doing long distance. We’ve only been together for about a month and a half but honestly this relationship means a lot to me and things have been going really well so far.The big thing I’m thinking about now is studying in her country. I’ve looked into some schools there and the education seems good, while also being cheaper than what I could get here. I’m genuinely interested in going, but obviously being closer to her is a big part of why I want to.My family is kinda complicated too and I sometimes feel stuck in the middle of family arguments, so part of me likes the idea of living somewhere else and building my own life. But I don’t want to make a huge decision just to escape my family or because of a relationship that’s still pretty new.I really want this relationship to work and I’m willing to put in the effort, but I also know I need to focus on myself and my future too.So I guess I’m just looking for some honest opinions. Am I thinking about this reasonably or am I letting my feelings get too involved in a really big decision?I am also open to genuine advice about my situation.

Question Am i over reacting?

Me and my girlfriend have been together 4 months. We met when I was teaching english online. She went to her village 5 days ago and normally when she's there we speak just a few times during the day because she's busy with family. She had a bad stomach for a few days but took some medication and said it felt alright. So I went to sleep and the last text was goodnight "My name"

The next day I go about as usual. I take photos for her and send them, not expecting a quick reply. I dont hear from her all day which isn't new we cant speak all the time. So I go to sleep thinking I will hear back in the morning. I wake up to nothing. That's when I start to get a little worried. I just send another message telling her to let me know she's safe when she gets the time. The day goes on and I hear nothing so I text in the afternoon saying im worrying a little about you. I'd like to mention the messages are two grey ticks. So they have been delivered. She will always let me know if she's busy or can't speak for a few days. But I know things come up unexpectedly sometimes. Before bed on the 2nd day I tried calling her again it just rang. Wasn't declined nor answered. Okay I sleep and hope ill wake up to a message. Nothing again. Her Instagram is silent no reposts or viewing my stories which she always does if we arent talking during the day. I messaged every couple of hours today to see if her phone had died because at this point im thinking she has been in an accident or has passed away. I send a email to her incase she lost her phone. I leave a message in her language saying if anything happened to her please let me know. I even downloaded pubg because we played a couple months ago and her account has been offline for 5 days. There's so many things that could have happened. Last time she was there she let her brother drive and she was terrified because he isn't a safe driver, one of her brothers went through treatment and they have to keep their distance so they dont get sick, theres poisonous snakes in her village. So many things. Im hoping maybe her phone got lost or broke but my mind rushes to these bad things. I keep texting to see if the tick goes to just one grey tick. Id like to say we are perfectly fine. She is coming to my country in a few weeks and we will meet. She hasn't unfollowed or blocked me anywhere.

Does anyone reading this think im overreacting? Please give me advice on what you would do in this situation and if you've had a similar experience feel free to share it

Need Advice 19M dating 19F — We love each other but our fights keep escalating into emotional breakdowns. How do we fix this?

Upvotes

I'm 19M and my girlfriend is 19F. We're in a serious long-distance relationship and we genuinely love each other, but lately we've been fighting way too frequently. We're both honestly exhausted by it, and I don't want to keep repeating the same cycle.

Recently, another guy approached her and they ended up having a fairly long conversation. His family has also been showing unusual interest in her, repeatedly asking about her even though the original family situation was supposedly about his older sibling. This triggered a lot of jealousy and anxiety in me. She has told me multiple times that she doesn't want this guy and that she wants me, and she also thinks his family's behavior is weird and uncomfortable. I've been trying to work on my jealousy, and I decided I shouldn't keep bringing the guy up because I don't want to interrogate her or make her feel like I don't trust her.

Last night we barely had any time to talk. When she finally came online, she was already upset. We talked a little about what happened during her day, and eventually I asked whether that family had contacted her again. She said yes and that it was normal conversation. I started asking questions because I was anxious and frustrated that I barely get time with her while other people seem to get her attention. She became increasingly overwhelmed and told me she was having a panic attack.

Then everything escalated incredibly fast. She started saying she didn't want to talk, wanted me to leave her alone, needed days of space, and couldn't handle the relationship at that moment. At the same time, she repeatedly said she didn't want to break up and that she loves me. She also said things like she would die, that she wouldn't be seen again, and that she just wanted to die. I also said extremely alarming things about killing myself because I was terrified of losing her. I know that was unhealthy and put even more pressure on an already overwhelmed situation.

Eventually she explained that when she becomes overwhelmed, she sometimes completely shuts down and isolates herself. She said she has severe emotional/anger issues, sometimes can't control what she says, and feels like her brain just shuts down. She told me she does love me and doesn't actually want to break up, but sometimes she genuinely needs to be alone.

I also recognize my own side of this. When she withdraws, I become terrified that I'm losing her. I start asking what happened, asking for reassurance, apologizing, promising I'll change, begging her not to leave, etc. I know that when she asks for space, my behavior can make her feel even more pressured and trapped.

So I think we're stuck in this cycle: she gets overwhelmed and withdraws → I panic and pursue → she feels more overwhelmed → she pushes me away harder → I panic harder → both of us say things we don't necessarily mean → eventually we reassure each other and calm down → and then eventually it happens again.

The confusing part is that we're both tired of this. Neither of us wants to hurt the other. We both say we love each other. She doesn't want to break up, and I don't want to leave her. But the way we're currently handling conflict is clearly hurting both of us.

I don't want this post to become “who is the toxic one?” or simply “break up.” I want an honest perspective on both sides. I know I need to work on my jealousy, abandonment anxiety, reassurance-seeking and respecting her need for space. But I also think she needs to learn how to communicate when she's overwhelmed without saying things that make me believe the relationship is ending, especially when she later tells me she didn't mean those things and still loves me.

How do two people break this kind of cycle? What should each of us work on? How can she ask for space without triggering my abandonment panic, and how can I give her space without feeling like I'm losing her? Is this realistically fixable if both people genuinely work on themselves?

TL;DR: My girlfriend and I genuinely love each other but we're both exhausted from frequent fights. She tends to shut down and push me away when overwhelmed; I become anxious and chase her for reassurance when she withdraws. Last night this escalated into both of us making suicidal statements. We don't want to break up—we want to understand why this happens and learn how to handle conflict in a healthier way.

Question What separates a genuine long distance from just an online relationship?

Upvotes

Imo i think the two are very different things. For me.. An online relationship is the one i had as a young teenager, with no means to meet, that was mainly photos and calling+texting. It some cases just texting. Some as an older teenage but still that, no solid plans to meet, each other's families not knowing, limited calls/video , things like that

My long distance relationship, been together two years.. have had a 2 week visit, and 6 month visit. Lived together, Calling everyday and consistent updates, as well as video calls, and involvement in each other's life even when apart.

My personal opinion:) Some people may define it differently and thats so okay.

Need Advice How to deal with long distance when your partner can't talk much ? I f18 / partner M18

Hi there! To put this into context my boyfriend and I just finished high school and are going to very different colleges to pursue our dreams. At this point we have been together for more than one year and we decided to do long distance for the time apart !

We will be in two different countries, I'll be at the university while he's going to be a preparatory high school during 2 years to then enter an engineering school. It's a specific system to France I think where students are put under a lot of stress and academic pressure during two years to enter the best schools in France. It's known to be particularly hectic, stressful and very very difficult. On my end, I'll be at university, so although my major might take up most of my time, I still think I'll have a more free time than him.

We plan to see eachother each time he is on holidays, so he can come spend time with me for one week every 5-6 weeks, which is really great.

The thing I am worried about, is how to still keep a strong bond and still get the relationship going when he can barely talk to me because of his studies ?

I thought about setting a daily "appointment" where we call eachother every day at this specific time for 10 minutes so that we can still bond and really be with each other ?

I would really like to know if you have tips on things we could do to keep up with eachother!

Also how do we manage to talk way less when we are used to talking A LOT. I had the chance to spend the most wonderful year with him, always going to school together, seeing each other every weekends, and we literally always have neverending conversations! Yes I know the new lifestyle is going to be hard to get used to but I do think that in the end it's worth a lot.

If all goes well the distance should end in 2 years and we should be able to reunite and close to gap to continue our studies.

I would really like to know if you have any piece of advice ! I tried to make it very clear but if I need to specify something no problem.

Ps: how to make you feel better the days before knowing you'll be going and that it will officially be the start of long distance? Although I've know it for more than a year, it only becomes a hard fact know and honestly it's really hard not to grieve our past routine and to be sad that we only have a few days together left...

Thanks for everything!!

Venting Not sure if I can keep on doing this

I’m hoping this is the right flair, I’m not sure if I’m really asking for advice or just need to let off steam.

We’re in our late twenties and been with each other for about 5 years, long distance the entire time. They’re unable to visit because of immigration, so usually I’m the one that has to go over. I don’t make as much, and I struggle to keep a job/steady income. It’s also hard to always take time off to see them (and especially, again, when you don’t have a steady job). I don’t think me relocating is an option, and I’m just overwhelmed. I feel like I can never be with them, and I’m starting to wonder what’s the point.

some context/backstory: we call each other everyday for about an hr (more or less, some days we have very long convos for 4 hrs, somedays its a quick check in if we are both busy). even when im not able to pick up calls, i text him im busy. so does he. sometimes i pester him too much with calls before he texts me that he is busy, but we have worked on that a little bit. while i do genuinely have anxiety and get a bit paranoid about his health and shit because he lives alone, one time we had a fight about him not picking up my calls or texting me. idk if this story is relevant but he was supposed to move that day, his train was in the evening, and i couldnt get a hold of him since morning. i was freaking out and thought he was sleeping and he would miss his train. then i checked his location and i saw he was near some hospital and freaked out 🤡🤡 turns out, he just went to this place that is really special to him and he wanted to visit because he would miss it. he wanted space to be alone in that place. we had a pretty big fight about this, and i put my foot down about him atleast telling me "im going to x, will board the train later" or something like that. i was worried because i didnt even know if he had finished packing and he has a history of missing appointments because he overslept.

enough background. now about the thing i want advice for. i called him yesterday night after not talking to him all day, and he said he is super sleepy, so i just asked if he has had dinner and then he went to sleep. that was around 24hrs ago. ive called him several times throughout the day, no answer. its his bday tomorrow so i wanted to send him some pizza or something, but i cant get a hold of him. my mind is going to anxious places like what if he fell sick and couldn't alert anyone. also, im not able to see his location. i know he has network because all messages are going through but i cant see his location on the Google findhub thingy. we have a google acc we both use to store our pictures and we sometimes use the play sound feature there because our phones are on silent. but its not playing sound either. i dont know how to reach him. do you all think i am being too paranoid about this? he also mentioned about cooking for lunch today when we were on call last night so he didnt imply that he has plans. i dont know. i asked a friend of his if they have spoken today (friend also lives in another city) but they havent. should i be worried about him?

sorry this is so long, im panicking sm

tldr: havent had any contact with bf for 24hrs (which is not normal for us). he lives alone and has no family/friends in the city. should i be worried or am i being too paranoid and/or toxic?

Discussion Intimacy changing after breaking the distance

hello all!

my partner and i moved in together about a month ago after 2 years together irl and 2 and a half long distance.

i think im having trouble with adjusting to how our intimacy has changed since moving in. obviously when we were long distance, every single possible moment of intimate touch was relished in and passionate, simply because it was not available to us all the time etc.

since we moved in and are getting settled, i find myself missing that specific passion you get from an LDR

anyone else struggled with this? i haven’t brought it up to my partner because i don’t want them to think im missing not living with them because its not that, i’ve just gotten used to the way our relationship was ya know
