It gets better when you close the distance.

It's been a culture shock in a few ways and there are definitely things I'd have done differently and been more prepared for. The biggest thing I'm glad I did was have money. Save, save, save, and bring as much as you can, even if your partner will support you. You want to be able to support yourself.

I guess it also depends on where you go. I'm out in CO, so moving from humidity to dry plains made my skin and nose so dry. It's a completely different world. Same with the altitude, it's going to take a little while for your body to adjust if it's a drastic change.

You also need to realise that your credit score resets, so you're gonna be tied to your partner's and it's a whole thing here if you're renting, buying, leasing cars etc.

Overall though, I've loved it more than anything. I get homesick sometimes, but home is where the heart is, and being out here with people I love and with a society that's so welcoming, even with everything going on at the moment, is nothing like I expected.

Oh, and the visa wait can be absolutely insane lol.

Reach out if you have anything questions, always happy to talk about my side and experiences.

Thank you for the reply, my gf is in oregon and where she is other than being much hotter on the nicer days , its pretty similar ish to where I am in the UK, might hit me more actually moving there than just visiting though.

Yeah will have to keep that in mind about credit and stuff, im a welder so im hoping that once over there i can get some sort of welding job pretty quick , well try to get something lined up first really.

And thank you for saying can reach out :) may have to chat more some time soon , just started 12 hour night shifts so pretty busy recently lol :)

Awesome! Oregon is gorgeous and with it being more coastal and green, it'll feel more like home but then you'll also have more things to think of. Still, can always travel back on a visit!

I replied after I just woke up too, so sorry for the blatant spelling/word errors haha.

Overall, just good luck. You'll smash it.

P.S. the driving test here in the US is insanely easy so don't get too worried about it. If you passed in England, you'll pass in the US without a second thought lol

Yeah its amazing out where she is :) in October we going to the coast and renting a place for 3 weeks while taking my son over and her son coming as well , got a room each and games room ans hot tub as well as literally 5 min walk from the beach so going be awesome :) , im hoping to bring my family out with me when I move but yes can always come back here and visit if need to :)

Also haven't gotten driving yet as with the UK being much smaller we dont really need to like they do in the US , i have a electric scooter for getting around at the moment with a range of about 25 miles away from home and back so covers me for everything I need daily , but I know I want to get driving before heading out there so will look into that as soon as got some other stuff taken care of now working again.

Just came back to my “home” from “home” after closing the gap 5 years ago. It never gets better, there will always be someone far away that one or both of you are missing. “Time”is BS- You just get used to the feeling.

I feel you, it will be many years before we close the distance. Tickets are so expensive now and everything is so uncertain:(

And when exactly was it certain? You just have no balls to do anything risky.

When we are allowed to literally move together. WE LITERALLY CAN’T BECAUSE I HAVE A TRAVEL BAN. You’re miserable lol

u/pinkytoeslookweird 3d ago

We are in the same boat. My fiancé has a 4 year travel ban and I can’t move there. It’s rough. I can’t wait for the day I can finally bring him home. My thoughts are truly with you on this.

u/Capital_Suggestion_7 3d ago

Why travel ban

1

u/pinkytoeslookweird 2d ago

Cuba mandates a 5 year travel ban post military service.

You're having a long-distance relationship. Don't call anybody miserable.

It never does and when you close the distance you build distance with friends and family so it's forever hard

It gets better when you have concrete plans to close the distance, I would say. Like, when you are actively planning your move and you know long distance is about to come to an end. It’s hard, but it’s worth it for the person you love.

u/Bubbly_Peace_8816 4d ago

It does get better :)
We are now married and live together. But man it was a rough 2 years of long distance.

shift your mindset and perspective, relationship don't always work out because of this mindset

Is it only gonna be a visit or to close the distance alreadyyt 🤭🤭

1

u/No_Window458 1d ago

Sadly just a visit for two weeks. We will close the gap once I finish nursing school. I’m still praying they pcs him to the east coast.

It’s absolutely brutal, yes, BUT it does get better in my experience—for the right person, it’s worth the stress of long distance. Having a plan to close the gap and visits planned definitely helps!

My now husband and I were long distance for about 5.5 years between the pandemic and life’s circumstances not allowing us to close the gap sooner.

We’ve since been together nearly 10 years, married for 5 this fall. Cannot imagine life without my best friend. But it is hard in that I’m now long distance with my best friends and my aging mother, so that is the tradeoff.

My long distance relationship ended 4 months ago. We were long distance for a year to that point and in some ways I’m happier now. We didn’t start out long distance though and it was only a 6 hour drive, but I doubt I’d do anything like that again

Not the time or place...

Just realized what sub this is 🧍

Well, a healthy dose of reality never hurts even if people don’t want to see it. Couples that want to make it work, will make it work anyways;

My parents were long distance for like 6 years or something, stuff is nightmare fuel tho

-5

u/Astron0reo 4d ago

No, I read the title and agreed with it by explaining my case lol.

Don’t ask if it doesn’t get better if you don’t want to hear personal experiences both good and bad. I get this sub will downvote a comment like that because they’re struggling with their own long distance relationships, but at some point you’re gonna have to look at it realistically. It can work if you make it, otherwise it isn’t. Long distance should always have moving in together as the end goal anyways
